I've watched a lot of KRS interviews and I just had to spread this one because he is in rare form here. I always enjoy what he has to say because he always has a unique perspective. In this clip he's super animated and detailed about his history coming up and he delves into his battles with Ice Cube, Poor Righteous Teachers, PM Dawn, X Clan etc. It's super long but the first hour or so is definitely worth it if you're interested.

Forgot to point out a few parts that are worthy of discussion:

- he said Russell Simmons banned Def Jam artists from participating in Self Destruction and HEAL, although LL and RUN DMC both (partly) defied him

- KRS claims that he is responsible for the taglines of the Source ("Music, culture and politics") and XXL ("Hip Hop on a Higher Level")

- he says that after Sex and Violence flopped (because of the backlash against the PM Dawn incident) Jive said they weren't getting a return on their investment with him, so he said stop investing in me...and they did. KRS implies that this also meant they stopped investing in conscious music as a whole, fascinating to hear as it was 92' when the conscious style was (deliberately or not) pushed to the background never to reemerge with the same power again

- he explains that him rapping into the headphones on the cover of Return of the Boom Bap wasn't simply artistic, supposedly back in the day they would plug that into the mic and it would work, who knew?
Fascinating stuff.

True but even in the Self Destruction video Slick Rick is in it. Remember back then there were only about 6 artists who were even on Def Jam and I also wonder why he didn't expand that to include Rush Affiliated artists. I was always curious why someone like Rakim wasn't involved in the Self Destruction song.

After posting this I was thinking about what Rakim said. He says that he brought the struggle back to hip hop lyrics as opposed to KRS' first album Criminal Minded and PE's first Yo Bumrush. However, thinking back about Paid In Full there's not really any conscious songs on there, it's mainly songs about emceeing. He has a more serious tone obviously than others at the time and not to take anything away from Ra but I'd argue that Criminal Minded with P is Free etc. had more to do with the struggle than anything on Paid In Full. Even Follow the Leader doesn't have much conscious stuff especially compared to By All Means which came out first. Ra didn't really get on that style until Let the Rhythm Hit Em with In The Ghetto etc. So him being upset about not being included in 1988 on Self Destruction is possibly a little iffy using his argument, as a top MC of the time though there is no reason he shouldn't have been on there.

He wasn't as overtly political as KRS, PRT or PE but he was one of the first prominent MC's to put 5% lyrics and imagery out there so I think in his mind he was at the forefront of the "conscious" movement and should have been one of the first calls made for the Self Destruction movement.

I respect Russ, but people get the misconception that he got to where he got being on the "cutting edge" yet time after time there are examples of him playing the super safe route and having others.... (often 2 White dudes..lol) convince him that they should do something that is outside the box...

At one point after the Poet & Hot Day dropped their diss Just-Ice was waiting outside of Mc Poet's crib with a shotgun. Poet isn't a "weak cat". KRS didn't tell Just to do that, but that was done because of how they went at BDP.

Throughout his career KRS has been running with the likes of Just-Ice, Freddie Foxx, Willie D., Truck Turner etc. He was equipped to handle whatever type of conflict that was brought his way.

but unfortunately "Just Ice interview" brings up a whole lotta other people on google. Just to be clear nobody said KRS specifically told Just-Ice to do that, Just took it upon himself to handle things that way. And anyway he's say he's cool with Poet now.
