"Was there a better year in Hip Hop than 1993??"

I'm not quite sure if there was (though I'm sure there are some strong contenders)

Tribe-Midnight Marauders
Wu- 36 Chambers
Snoop- Doggystyle
Black Moon- Enta Da Stage
De La- Buhloone Mind State
Souls- 93 Til Infinity
Master Ace- Slaugtherhouse

7 albums I can just about listen to straight through. Put these on rotation, and you can get through the better half of a day without really having to push the skip button ONE TIME.

there is no way i can be honest with myself and say when i was 7, the best year for the hip hop album happened. but going back to some of those records as a young adult early 20s, i don't trip on anyone saying so

Not telling you what should be yours but from those acts you just named I can see why you feel that way. You're down more with east coast acts and that's fine.... for you.

Quik, The Coup & ATL's albums alone made 98 a good year. Throw Goodie Mob's & DMX on top of that and you had the last year I was really down with hip hop.

classics IMO

>Aquemini - Outkast
>Moment of Truth - Gang Starr
>Capital Punishment - Big Pun

good to great

>Vol II Hard Knock Life - Jay-Z
>Still Standing - Goodie Mob (i remember i liked it, but was disappointed when it dropped. i haven't heard it in years)
>40 Dayz & 40 Nightz - Xzibit
>E.L.E. - Busta Rhymes

such strange records these too. who denied they were "hot", damn near classic in 98? no one; but 13 years later they sound dated and gimmicky/corny IMO

>It's Dark & Hell Is Hot - DMX
>Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood - DMX (dude was on fire
>in 98)

these bordered on decent to terrible

>War & Peace Vol I - Ice Cube
>The Recipe - Mack 10
>Shadiest One - Wc
>Da Game Is To Be Sold Not To Be Told - Snoop Dogg (didn't like
>it when it first came out but gornw to like it since)

to this day haven't heard any of these

>Steal This Album - Coup
>Ruthless for Life - MC Ren
>My Homies - Scarface
>Legends - Above the Law
>Rhythm-Al-Ism - DJ Quik

Atliens alone makes a strong case for 96. If All Eyez on Me was a more focused single disk I would have went with 96 for sure.

Yeah I think this yr might be the best yr in hip Hop since 98.

So many dope albums came out this yr from new artists like Kendrick, Thurz, Big Krit and Schoolboy Q to vets like Wise Intelligent, Casual, Monch and Quik.

always leave out the most popular albums in favor of obscure shit.

onyx - bacdafucup
and naughty by nature - 19-naughty-3
were in fact probably the most popular albums of that year behind the chronic.

i don't really think slaughterhouse by masta ace is better than either of those.
i think the majority of fans of hip-hop that actually were buying and enjoying hip-hop albums IN 1993 would agree with that too.
that album was less than a footnote in the history of hip-hop.
the only reason people still talk about it is because people like chairman mao and other mind squad members liked it.

than anything on slaughtahouse.

slaughtahouse is defintely masta ace best album,
and it's not a bad album.
but it's not as good as advertised.

the source liked it due to the way they viewed rap music back in the early 90's and mostly because it was probably the first album to diss the west coast.

meanwhile bacdafucup & 19-naughty-3 took east coast sounding hip-hop mainstream and allowed for acts like the wu-tang clan to become popular afterward.

but of course, that means nothing...

Onyx was a gimmick and Naughty always had huge monster singles. Bacdafucup had about four songs that still get played by me today. you can keep the rest of that album. Their followup, All We Got Iz Us is a far superior album. Shit, i'd even take the third album over Bacdafucup.

Midnight Marauders a 2mil selling album obscure. Doggystyle, probably the most successful rap debut / 4mil seller, obscure. 36 Chambers which was a critical darling and sold a mil by 96 obscure. Souls' album that has one of the most recognizable rap songs "93 til Infinity", which an 18 yrs old rapper like Mac Miller raps over on his mixtape, obscure...

L, O, F, L!

i guess one can call Slaughterhouse and Enta Da Stage obscure, but whatever.

Onyx's album is gimmicky/corny as fuck now and sounds VERY DATED. I'll give you Naughty, for some reason they've been erased from our Hip Hop memories

lot of stuff is corny and dated. it's still enjoyable on some level.

>I'll give you Naughty, for some reason they've been
>erased from our Hip Hop memories

they were erased for the same reason cypress hill, heavy d, queen latifah, salt-n-pepa, house of pain, domino, etc. were erased.
they had white dollar success before it was en vogue.
this is what east coast rap journalist/taste makers favored in the early 90's. thankfully some never caught on...
ex.
warren g's 1994 album was wack.
k-dee's 1994 debut album was dope.
well, i've heard both. and uhh...
so many of these biases/opinions have been perpetuated by "knowledgeable" rap fans to formulate many rap fans "opinions" today.
a lot of you don't even know it but you have people like reginald dennis' and sascha jenkins opinions and favorites transplanted to your brain over where you formulating your own taste would have been.

or where you talking about another piece/post.

uhm in the west Cypress aint erased AT ALL. Domino had one hit record. Latifah, lol, who done erased her? She is imbedded in the hip hop lexicon.

sure if you wanna hate on writers of color who helped define the 90s rap world and who can hardly get print in mags now cause arrogant white writers like Bradon Soderberg, Noz, Tom Breihan, Alex Mcpherson and Sean Fennesy are preferred over them, that's you. i still respect what they have to say over those just listed who waste Guardian, New Yorker, Vulture, Spin, Rolling Stone, XXL, Pitchfork Tumblr space talkin about the greatness of Gucci, Souljah Boy, Rick Ross, Lil B and having hard-ons for the Clipse, Diplomats and 50.

than I discovered 90's hip hop in the 00's?? Not the case at all. I was born in the 70's. Well into my 30's. When I bought those albums, they were $10 cassete tapes. I listed albums like Slaughterhouse as opposed to Naughty and Onyx, because it was a better album...to me at least. The Chronic was a sick album, but as far as I remember, it dropped in late 92.

either way, it was a strong year. My friends who are a bit older tend to lean more towards some of those late 80's years. The guys I graduated with tend to lean more early 90's.

Things Fall Apart
Black on Both Sides
Operation: Doomsday
Internal Affairs
The Slim Shady Album
In My Lifetime Vol. 3
Murda Muzik
I Am...
Chronic 2001
Streetz Iz a Mutha
N@#$a Please
So, How's your Girl?
Blackout (Meth and Redman)
Soundbombing 2
Beneath the Surface

Ones that I like but I'm sure most wouldn't include:
Swollen Members - Balance
Lootpack - Soundpieces: Da Antidote
Atmosphere - Se7en
Dr. Dooom - First Come, First Served
Kool Keith - Black Elvis
Rubber Room - Architechnology

And few decent, but not great ones:
Inspecktah Deck - Uncontrolled Substance
O-God - Golden Arms Redemption
PGC - Mpire Strikez Back

Probably some I'm forgetting in there. Regardless, I personally wouldn't rank it THAT high in terms of great years for hip-hop.

TFA is the only great album on that list you could put against the cream
of the crop from 93.

i can't think of any classic material from those years that can compete with 93. Doggystyle, 36 Chambers, MM, 93 Til Infinity, Buhloone Mindstate, etc, what from 98 or 99 was fucking with that? Maybe Aquemini in 98 and TFA in 99

The original version of Mad Flava's FROM THE GROUND UNDA was meant for an August 1993 release but was delayed until the spring of 1994 due to a sample, and that canceled it out from gaining the momentum Priority Records set for it in the summer of 93.

With that said, hard to say if 93 is a solid year. For me, it would be 1988 or 1989, with a preference towards 1989. But then again, 1979-1999 was an incredible period.

It was a good year. Off top you had Dah Shinin, The Infamous, OB4CL... Soul Food And Liquid Swords. Still don't think it was better than the three years I mentioned as far as classic LPs go.
