"come clean: classic songs where you heard the remake first."

and didn't know it was a remake.

as i mentioned in that doggystyle post: "lodi dodi."

also, "at your best (you are love)" and "work to do" by the isley brothers.

there are probably a few others i'll come up with, but those are probably the most egregious examples.

the remakes were HUGE hits while the originals were album tracks. there's a difference between that and, say, not knowing patti labelle made "if you ask me to" first.

In response to Reply # 0

I first heard "Helter Skelter" with Mötley Crue as a kid and didn't even know it was a Beatles-song until MUCH later...

Cum on feel the noize I thought was a Quiet Riot original but is of course a Slade-song. I never checked for Slade growing up on the strength of their terrible hits "My oh my" and "Runaway".

Metallica's classic non-album B-side "Am I evil?" is a Diamond Head song but I didn't know until much later for some reason; I guess I was bad at checking credits when I was younger. Also, that song sounded totally metallica unlike many of their other covers...

Just like Sweet, Suzie Quatro or even T.rex to a certain extent. Basically, the british '70's glam-rock scene never truly crossed over to america (not that it needed to, Kiss and Alice Cooper held it down in the US with better records IMO-Marc Bolan/T.rex an obvious exception).

Basically, i doubt the regular american knows that it's a cover. For me, it was more ignorance since Slade actually were quite big in sweden...

I had no idea that Todd Rundgren was the originator. I just thought it was an Isley Bros. joint

his song (w/Utopia), "Love Is The Answer" -- I knew one of the covers before I knew his song

my favorite version of that song was recorded by Keni Burke, but I heard that one after Utopia's.

I had only heard Isaac Hayes' version, and when I learned that Dionne Warwick sang it originally I damn near had a heartache. Although Dionne's version is really really great, Isaac killed that shit in a manner that's hard to follow.

it's almost like it's 2 different songs entirely because isaac haye's take is so radically different from the original. hers is a pop ditty that's great (fantastic, really) to snap your fingers to. isaac haye's take is EPIC.

because honestly there are tons of songs where i actually heard the sample first when i was younger then read some liner notes, then had the internet years later or heard it on the radio at some point

and one great example is that i never realized that was minnie ripertons voice on lyrics to go until i watched the documentary. . . #facepalm

Song already existed in a few iterations before her.

For Once In My Life which I thought was Stevie's until I saw him bring up Tony Bennett to sing it at MSG.

Erykah Badu's 4 Leaf Clover I thought was an original (which I like) until my big bro walked in on me playing it and got pissed off. He said she messed up the song.

I very much doubt there's ANYBODY who heard the Bob Dylan original first. For most people it's the Hendrix version they're familiar with, or if you're a lot younger, the ubiquitous cover version by the Dave Matthews Band.

I heard Al B Sure's remake first. Still like Al's remake better than the OG.
