"Remember when good singers actually sang on their records?"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl7Fh9XmDg4&feature=player_embedded#at=54

Go ahead and call me old fashioned but I just don't get what B is doing... besides making money of course. I would think at the level she is already at she'd want to elevate the quality of her music and in doing so move her fan base forward... I guess that's just not who she is. Beyond what's being passed off as music here, B doesn't really even get a chance to show she can sing... why would someone with pipes like this takes a song better suited for B level voice instead of something that lets her shine? I'm sure it will end up being a big hit... but in the end it's doing nothing to advance her as an artist or help her place in the pantheon of greats.

i'm 125% sure she's got at least 1 ballad on her album where she impresses us w/her vocal chops. or at least tries to.

not to mention the mid-tempos.

and probably an uptempo track or 2 where she's blowing all over the place.

this is a 1st single.

fuck you.

ReMember when Kelly dropped that joint "friend of mine", folks went bonkers over the sound of that..some trained singers was like "Watch"..

I was like "whaaa?"

They explained that, it doesn't benefit you to blow like that on record, especially when chips ain't in place right for you to immediately benefit..

For (1) you gonna blow your sh*t out (vocal chords), doing it every week (Ask Whitney)..and then if the money ain't right, why you bending over to holler and paying for it later (Fantasia)..

It's sad, we looooooove a great song, and a wonderful singer...but then we don't maintain that love for the singer...when THAT style of singing starts to break you down..

It's a fact, as hard as Aretha caaaaan go, even show knows when to "coast" it, bet you come up short with her show doe..watch 2min intervals of your favorite hits...and a quick and sassy "Goodnight" be a Queen order..lol

That's just me and my thinking tho...

King James Bible states in (1st Corinthians 14:8-9)-"..Again, If the trumpet does NOT sound a clear call, who will get ready for battle?..So it is with you."

For an audible glimpse of my sound, click here: http://www.zshare.net/audio/9549455779abe02a/

You have the like it/hate it opinions, the automatic blind stannery's "I LOVE IT" (even if they know they aren't feeling it)...

But most telling are the "It's wack/okay, but I'm sure I'll like it after the radio plays it alot or I see the video" crowd. Have people truly accepted and resigned themselves to the force-feeding?

The fact that we know nowadays that a song will be a hit regardless of the quality, is sad...

...like seeing the energy the song can provide. Like, "Oh, so that's how you're supposed to use this song."lol

But in her case, it seems like a regular occurrence. Like people don't really feel her music, but they fall in love with her videos/dance routines/slo-mo poses in the sunlight...Then you tack on the constant airplay? *sigh*

Her greatest assets have been her thighs, light skin and daddy's business sense.

The albums have been getting steadily worse since the debut.

to me, her debut album wasn't very good. AT ALL. it was an average mainstream R&B album with some good singles & a couple other cuts. i think her most recent project was pretty good. she has YET to release a GREAT album, but i don't think the quality has gone downhill. just uneven.

At the time, I thought she would build on that to eventually record something that could be considered a classic.

It's not like she has no vocal skills. Plus she can afford the best writers/arrangers/musicians/producers.

From the way she used to talk, I assumed she really wanted to be on that legendary level a la Aretha. But Aretha put in a good decade (at least) before you could say she was coasting.

B has been coasting since the first album. I think she's more concerned with being famous/rich than being an artist.

I'm fine with that, but admit it and don't be comparing yourself to the greats.

You get past the hype, there were a few songs that displayed some semblance of soul even if still lacking (Crazy In Love, Be With You, Me Myself & I, Speechless, The Closer I Get To You). The production was much simpler, which allowed more opportunity for her voice to be showcased.

As time went on, her voice AND the production, became bogged down in "Extraness" (too much of everything, runs, loudness, percussion, etc.)
She could still make a mean dance song, but her albums seemed less cohesive as you move forward. And whatever ounce of soul she may have initially displayed, had been sucked out.

it's playing dance music. beyonce is competing with lady gaga, britney spears, rihanna and katy perry. lead singles in 2011 are dance songs. out of those 4, only one who tried to sing on a lead single was rihanna, and that was probably specifically BECAUSE it was a departure for her & folks don't think she can really sing.

beyonce will sing on later singles. remember, of all the songs from her last project, the one that won a grammy was "halo." shoot, last time around, she released a ballad along with the dance single. it's not de rigeur at this point b/c it's not what's being checked for. i'm sure she'll drop a couple ballads from this album. but the lead single is specifically NOT the time to do it in 2011.

"beyonce is competing with lady gaga, britney spears, rihanna and katy perry"

which means she's not nearly as special as they've been trying to sell us she is.

it was fantasia that had a huge portrait of aretha franklin prominently displayed in her debut video, not beyonce lol.

despite the 10 grammys or whatever she has, i don't think she's ever portrayed herself as being in the tradition of aretha & whitney....she's consistently placed herself in the vein of diana ross & tina turner. and if those are her lodestars, then she's well on pace musically.

It doesn't "move" me. There're still good singers out there(regardless of the lack of support they get) but rarely, do they move me.

They could wail from the depth pits of their pussies(or balls) or they could sing from the tip of their throats, I don't hear anybody nowadays who could put a sore lump in my throat or get my adrenaline to hit the roof.

No, You're not old fashioned, you just have high standards. I think its reasonable.

which i guess is her competition, but i thought of Bey as a trend-setter and thought she might go in another direction for the single. but it just seems they wanted to get this out there as a 'street' single. time will tell.

Really? I've always founded her music to be safe and formulaic, coppin' the latest flavor of the month producer and sicked the hype machine on her new products.

I'm saying "products" because there's no way in black & blue hell I'd call whatever she's pushing "music".

I don't like songs like "Single Ladies," "Get Me Bodied" "Freakum Dress," etc... but they don't sound like anything anybody else was doing at the time.*

*Maybe they owe a little to Amerie's shouty, atonal "singing" and Richa Harrison's percussion-heavy production**

**Wait... Did Rich produce any of those Beyonce tracks? I forget...

Beyonce always has a hip approach to the background harmonies. I dig em.

And she is singing on this. I mean she's not wailing on it but it ain't like anybody's gonna hear this and think she can't sing...

It's an effective vocal.

39. "no one SANGS on pop records...its not allowed"
In response to Reply # 0

Im not sure if someone here or somewhere else broke it down
The successful "crossover" singers keep their SANGING to a minimum if not at all
Hence the reason why Rhianna gets over and folks like JHud or Fantasia will stay riding the Radio One snore train
Pop music can't handle it.

I told my girl that JHud didnt have a chance with her new single crossing over due to her style of singing on that record. If Carrie Underwood delivered the same song, it would be in the top 10 by now. J's career doesnt stand a chance in the pop world.

Now B can walk that line because she can wear that pop hat without intimidating that audience.

not like shes been hiding it. she doesnt need to do that on every single song. plus shes POP. comparing her to aretha doesnt make sense. shes making pop songs. with big hooks. shes not about bringing the house down with emotive/powerful vocals, not on every single anyway. she needs to create a big pop hit. big singing isnt necess the best way to do that. anyway, shes allowed to try out diff vocal styles from time to time. thats what makes good singers.

44. "What's with this "Everybody knows you don't SING on a lead single""
In response to Reply # 0

How about Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love". IMO that is one of the best pop singles of the last 10 years (at least). She sang the fuck out of that track, and people loved her for it. It launched her career (granted, her career is pretty much done, but that's moreso due to lackluster followups). That song touched me more than any Beyonce song ever has. And the sad thing is we all know Beyonce could rip the shit out of that song, but she's too scared to.

Other examples of lead singles by females with actual singing:
Adele - "Rolling in the Deep"
Kelly Clarkson - "A Moment Like This" (launched her career)
Kelly Clarkson - "Breakaway" (launched her 5x platinum album)
Carrie Underwood - "When He Cheats"

So let's not act like singing on a lead single is a career-killer.
