"Best Prince albums that Prince never made??"

Due to the weather, today is a boring day in the revolution office headquarters

Brief explanation behind post:
About every few years or so, you will read a blog, post, mag etc about a prince influenced record stating this is the record that Prince wishes he could make. Yes indeed it was cool saying this maybe 15 years ago but every time there's a linn drum or a hint of an mpls influence, that statement is thrown around. Scott Poulson Bryant was the king of the this is the album Prince should make. Which got me to thinking. How many albums are there?

So let's have some fun and list our favorite Prince records that Prince never made or wish that he made

I will kick it off with one of the best, if not THE best- George Michael's Faith.

One of the most underrated albums ever,
but I disagree that any of his entire albums
sound like Prince albums.

His writing is wayyy different from Prince's
and his sound has always been different, imo.

The synchopated drum patterns of a lot of the fast tunes (Tender Lover, My Kinda Girl etc) it just had me thinking he was apeing Prince throughout.

8. "Good Choice."
In response to Reply # 0

My choice would have been Jesse's SHOCKADELICA.

His first solo (my favorite Jesse album) was a clear statement of where he used to work (and a damn good one). But that album, sounded more like the kind of things you thought Prince would be making after the bandwagon started emptying a lil.

Nowadays, I'm not sure I like it more than PARADE, but apparently, it put the kind of impression on Prince to make a song with the same title, driving the Purplesaurus Rex drinkers to believe Jesse copied him...

15. "Prince got his Purple from Jessie's Pink"
In response to Reply # 8

he watched Jessie like crazy and was in awe of him. i like Shockadela way better than corny Parade. I only like 3 songs off of Parade.

Parade then and now sounded like prince beating on purple pots and pans because he had some money and bought some isntruments and things, but he didn't have many of what i'd call songs there.

the tour though was smoking. the parade tour was tight, but that album was something that might work on a Brady Bunch's family trip but I couldn't get with that flower power snowflake and no chocolate grit in there.

Jessie had a few cuts i liked on Shock back in the day. nowadays it is dated for the most part and Jesse is a Badd Guitar Player and Keyboard player and knew a Groove or two, however he never got it right as a Songwriter or as a Artist in full.

to me shock and Parade both are dated, the hits are still kinda cool.

i loved the 12 inch version of "She I can't resist" that had some stank on it.

but anyway Jesse

because if so, I pretty much agree.

I loved the tour for Parade but wasn't really buying into that cabaret balladry on a couple of those songs.

probably his weakest 80s album aside from Batman.

I might give it the nod over Lovesexy depending on my mood.

well side 1 trumps diamonds and pearls...lol

MJ accomplished what Prince wanted but failed miserably
Which was update his sound to compete with the New Jacks
MJ had his ear to the streets and knew what to do to reach that audience
Prince had NO CLUE, thought he could do what Teddy and them were doing without seeking outside help.
The results were......................i dont even want to revisit

and those 2 meshell records.....good ones maxx

or much of a instrumentalist and he can't write no real songs. he has lyrical content skills for hooks and he is a artist that has charisma and persona, however dude ain't got much to make it solo.

problem is he got caught out there and never could turn that next switch to either making it solo or settling for the role of leader of the Group and needed his strong co Star to shine.

Prototype was the only cut that half way moved me. hey ya was catchy and it sold because of a few catchy tracks, however once the smoke cleared it was found there wasn't much substance there.

Yep. Lisa Coleman's piano solo from "All My Dreams" could easily fit in "Hounds", and thats just one example.

Here's an artist I wouldn't mind Prince pair up with in a "duet album"(even though I hate duet albums). "Why Should I Love You" & "My Computer" are simply not enough.

it's Andre Cymone, so it makes sense. when i was a kid i thought it was 1 of those Prince songs w/the high voice (aka Camille songs) until i saw the video.

i thought George Michael's 'Hard Day' was a Prince song too, also b/c i thought i recognized that Camille voice in it. it's in the last 1/4 of the song.

both songs were out around the same time as 'If I Was Your Girlfriend' which was 1 of my favorites.

fuck you.

Andre just went in a different direction with his. there synth and programming is spot on to each other, andre's bass playing has more edge of the two.

i had andre's tapes. kellys eyes was that cut,and what are we doing here.

andre showed on the jody set he could easily do the sound if he wanted to.

I tend to compare AC with Fruit at the Bottom
We knew their influence on Prince and they did too
And when they went solo, they tried to steer far away from the sound they helped to create
but when they were comfortable enough with it, they did it well
Both AC and Fruit at the Bottom are great "tribute" records.
I think AC was overshadowed by RFTW that year when it came to keeping that MPLS synth funk alive.

I would add Jody's whole debut album as well to this list
Still A Thrill is one bad ass cut!!!!

Those jams and Get It Girl are jams!
Dre's records pre AC had the MPLS vibe on some songs but he was far more new wave, flock of seagull's-ish for me at the time.
Which come to think about it as i type, new wave is part of the MPLS sound.
I might have to revisit his records.

I couldnt get into an entire record of his without skipping songs
AC was a perfect balance for me. Sans Sweet Surrender, the entire AC record's in my ipod.

reference an album of his as a whole that has unskippable tracks or at least the majority of it. Pretty Wild Girl could've been a monster slow jam but all that gotdamn whining and shit mars it. The new wave influence of the MPLS sound goes without saying but Andre stayed in that neighborhood a little longer. I mean, just the cover of Surviving The 80's was less Sly & The Family Stone & more Flock of Kajagoogoo.

verdict's the same
his songwriting structure wasnt quite there on those albums which led me to skipping tracks again
pulled out AC too for comparison, there's more flesh to those songs..he was on to something on that. If he would've put out one after AC, i bet it would've been amazing.

i can deal with the whining on pretty wild girl...sheeeit he whines an almost every song....what person doing mpls wasnt whining...that was a prereq..lol
