So can you drop the aphoristic snark for two minutes and actually explain what you don't like about him? lol, Just curious - I actually would've thought you'd enjoy him ... wondering what it is that puts you off.

((Or is it that you don't like competition in the "grating and grumpy personality" dept???))

(((Just kidding!)))

((((Mostly...))))

naw man, Randy Newman is in the upper echelon of songwriters, even outside of his own body of recorded work, whose songs provide a framework for a vast array of interpretive possibilities.

http://www.coversproject.com/artist/randy%20newman/ - everyone from the expected (Judy Collins) to the unexpected (the O'Jays) to the campy (Bette Midler) to the bizarre (Nazareth) have done his songs.

There's Nilsson Sings Newman.

There's the Alan Price Project, who put 7 Randy Newman songs on one album... in 1967.

There's I Think It's Going To Rain Today. There's Sail Away. There's even 'You Can Leave Your Hat On.'

So none of that may mean much to you, but I mention it because it can serve as a kind of objective support of his stature as a songwriter. Even so, his own versions are frequently the most beautiful and poignant (and seriously, his arranging skills are masterful). (And it tends to be either his dark'n'twisted songs or his poignant songs that move me the most, not the super-snark which likely informed your opinion which I hope to change.)

Knowing my tastes and aesthetics as well as you do, I think you can listen to the 5 songs I listed below and it should be immediately apparent why I do hold him in such high regard.

Chances are good that once you heard it, you'd place it immediately.

That said, in the time it took you to type a request for links, you could have googled his name or went to youtube to find some.

People forget how deep his discography is (I'm looking at allmusic as I type this, there are at least two major releases on here I still haven't heard, and I count myself a big fan).

He also has that ever elusive trait: repeatability. Even his most well-known tunes hold lyrical surprises upon repeat listens, often because the humor of a track provides a sort of initial layer that can make a tune seem pretty basic.

I didn't really dive into him until a few years ago, and I still don't know much about his film scores... but he's easily become one of my favorites. His first run of studio albums, pre-77, are undeniably brilliant, one of the best runs an artist can ask for.

I love that his music just seems to eminate from a different place than most. There's an awful lot of "soul" in his work that just doesn't fit the usual constraints of the term musically, and it's a beautiful thing. There's a particular power in his brand of music that's just kinda necessary to balance out everything else.
