I don't get why Jay-Z's subject matter is such a problem for people. It's his lane, he does it well.

Ghostface has a lane.
Drake has a lane.
Biggie had a lane.

What's important is that you be the best in your lane. I think Jay is.

I'm officially excited about a Jay album and it's been awhile (given I consider myself a jay fan).

His solo output since AG has been alright/cool for what it was but I didn't get 'excited' about it.

THIS...I'm looking very much so forward to.

honestly, jay sort of spazzed on WTT. a lot of people feel kanye out-shined him but IMO ye phoned it in lyrically back in 09. if jay can manage to squeeze good production out his producer cabal then i have no doubt we'll get a handful of bangers out of it.

but Hov had him reign it in a bit and make some safe shit that would hit because he's on that "too big to fail" shit.

it wasn't really shocking to me that Ye > Hov on WTT. i got the sense that Ye really wanted to 1up big brother.

kanye's verses on NIP and HAM are atrociously bad. jay easily outshined him on 70% of the album AT WORST. dude went in on who gon stop me and why i love you.

everyone's entitled to their opinions though.

But Swizz killed them all with style alone. Nigga came through finishing Kanye's verse like "oh that was cool my nigga......AK ON MY LAP LIKE WHATS THAT"

"All white bentleh....I call it momma" Swizz got them non sequitur on deck like the next Kool Keith.

"See me rockin suede nigga in the damn rain." The imagery is intense. You can picture Swizz skipping across rain puddles in the street while wearing a custom made suede throwback jersey. Swizz killed it.

"They used to call me Baby Luke....but now? The whole damn 2 Liiiive Crew."

my favorite artists are dropping new albums like a month before they drop.. i think all of the "big" releases and the projects i was anticipating have been pretty awesome to me so far.. i'd be lying if i said i wasn't excited every time jay's about to drop a new album.. and i'm even cool w/ him sticking w/ pharrell, timbo, rick rubin and swizz, etc... when has anyone ever known jay-z to break new ground? he's still one of the best/most loved in the biz, imo

But that said, I like what Jay's doing. He tried to "push the envelope" with BP3 and failed miserably. He proved he was too old to do it I think. Bring it back to basics with people your age/from your era who you have a comfort level with and just put out bangers. No need to try and change the game a decade after you ever had even a minimal ability to do so. I'll give it a shot and hope for the best.

I said he failed at changing the course of rap. The whole point (in his words) of the "Blueprint" series is that he is setting the "blueprint" for the next era in rap. In 3 (or 4 depending on how you consider BP2) volumes/attempts, he only succeeded in that endeavor once.

But, yes, it sold well and had two of his biggest hits ever. That can't and won't be denied. A Jay album will always sell well no matter how bad it is.

But all in all it was a terrible, unlistenable album IMO. I think most rap fans agree that by and large it isn't a very good album but had a couple hits and a couple decent tracks. I listened to that album front to back a grand total of one time.

the one with the ominous lurching repetitive piano chord...I don't know what it is about watching non-musicians play any air instruments...but it's always funny looking to me.

This album should be called "Summer Movie" because it prolly won't be as interesting as the commercial.
