If she really likes all that music good for her, but the whole thing seems calculated - it reminds me of how I feel seeing semi-hot chicks in very revealing superhero outfits at gamer conventions or something. Like they found that niche area where they can be the queen, and it's more about the attention than the ostensible subject they are there for (in this case, the music).

I won't lie though - if she was a little better-looking I'd probably be on this site every day.

She has that look of someone that's a little too obsessed with their looks - super-skinny but somehow still has a huge rack, weird lips that suggest she had a little work done. Girls like that often end up looking really strange down the road because they can't accept what time and biology does to the body. Right now she's very hittable, but to be honest, I'd much rather look at a girl who's less superficially hot, but more natural in appearance.

I like pizza and I like basketball, but I don't need to eat a slab of Giordano's while I'm shooting hoops.

That's the glib response though. Actually it's not the combination that puts me off - after all, I own probably a hundred albums with naked chicks on the cover, and I can't even tell you how many hours I've spent staring at that Roxy Music art. What troubles here is the scent of desperation. (That and her weird lips/complete lack of body fat.) It feels like some skeevy music nerd conceptualized and wrote the whole thing, and found the perfect attention-starved girl to take pics with his records.

edit: I'm absorbing all these references she's making in the Morris Day/Buddy Miles piece. It feels like someone probing my mind, this is pretty good.

I grinned right when she got to Ray Parker Jr. and noted her preference for the production of "Mr. Telephone Man". There you go.

I wish I could remember its name, though it's shut down anyway.

She also looks like she's been rocking a corset since she was a toddler.

Probably written by her crusty old white neighbour who pays her to pose with the records. Pass.

It's cynical but I can't help it. Anyway, she looks pretty good but that look is very common here in sweden and I've never been into blondes. However, if she is real, she would be awesome as a girlfriend-I never met anyone except ONS's with a great taste in music. Then again, I REALLY don't think it's important and I'm perfectly happy with my "Celine Dion and Brandy are the best!"-gf...

I mean, our tastes are 90% non-overlapping (most of that is mine, since I listen to ten times the variety of music she does), but I don't aggressively hate most of her favorites, which tend to be the softer side of indie rock. I'm not holding out a lot of hope to ever run into the woman that shares my enthusiasm for hip hop, dancehall, death metal, jazz, funk, and punk rock. (And if I do meet that woman, I'm going to start to wonder if I'm starring in my own personal Truman Show.)

It's just not girl-music in my experience (well, a lot of chicks in sweden dig melodeath and back in the day, Paradise Lost was popular amongst goth- and synth-chicks but that's not really the music I mean).

I once met a girl when I was drunk that REALLY dug the Art Ensemble of Chicago's "Les Stances de sophie"-album I put on when I took her home but she was cheating on her boyfriend-I've NEvER had a girlfriend that could even stand a minute of some vintage Cecil Taylor or Archie Shepp.

For me, the best thing from a music-perspective to have a mainstream chick-musically is that it sort of make you come down to earth and less elitist musically at least for a while and keep up with pop-culture. I think it's fun to discuss the merits of the latest Rihanna-single or whatever with my gf because it's not something I usually do...

EDIT:My gf for some reason appreciate stuff like AC/DC and Thin Lizzy when I put it on and also reggae and Hip-Hop of most sorts-that's cool...

Although I've slowly gotten my girlfriend to halfway tolerate (or at least understand why I tolerate) death metal. Via - of course - Metalocalypse. I find that show pretty funny, but the best thing about it is that it got a friend of mine into metal and moved my girlfriend from a position of "What the fuck??" to "Oh, OK. Just don't play it around me."

Wow. Sun Ra and Don Cherry I can see even if *I* never met any girl who dug that.

However, Anthony Braxton is just *so* academic, humourless, "unfunky" and pretty much totally anti-pop in his approach and girls generally don't dig that in my experience so that's strange...

Still, she didn't dig Cecil, right? If she did, that's really impressive...

Someone has an actually engaging, well-written, ethusiastic music blog with some goofy comparisons and a hyperbole or two, they're probably going to encounter some other dork at some point that accuses them of being a snob or an elitist or starting a flame war of some sort.

Throw in a valley girl-esque method of rambling about "cool" music and a "hot" girl to pose in the photos and it's ZOMG WHAT AN AMAZO BLOG!

She's a real person. The cover girl for Adrian Younge's "Something About April" album.

Fire was right, The Lesson does hate women. Kudos to those of you that actually read rather than judged with the first thing you saw. Yes sex sells but it doesn't mean it's inauthentic. And if you actually read some of her entries it's pretty clear someone couldn't create this character. She obviously inherited a collection from her father (noted a few times throughout the blog) and got hooked to become a vinyl collector.

Music nerdery can happen to anyone. You may not like who she is or how she looks but if you read them entries she does the knowledge on the music. Outside of the music she's not really my type at all, but the music is actually the most interesting part. She be connecting six degrees of separation in ways you didn't even think about. The tongue in cheek flirtations may seem gimmicky but nowhere near enough to dismiss her music knowledge.

one she's got a lane (it happens to be the lane of a lot of cats here which is why my hyperbole in the subject was so effective). your lane is much broader than hers. MUCH. And that's a fault, because you don't have a niche. You cover everything from Bartok to Big Boi. If I go and I see Bartok I might not give enough of a fuck to see that you get into Big Boi (I'm not talking about me of course).

The reason this is so effective is right there in the first post. SHe's wearing a Prince shirt holding a Sun Ra record. That seems like a stretch but for a Lessonhead that's like gold. OH SHIT!!! The legs and all of that is a secondary factor. THey have to dissassociate them. Like yo that's dope but them legs can't be part of it. That was tangential.

You've got "What's New" but rather than cover shots and gatefold spreads you've got the spines. On first look one might not even notice that those are actually what you're then writing on and assume it's just a stock shot of spines. And then you're doing review style with the star ratings. First glance "oh a blogger doing retroactive reviews, if I don't know or care about the artists//release no *need* to read" All because I can see star ratings.

Point being it's not that you need tits and ass holding the records, but you need something more than the star ratings to let a reader know that its worth reading. And it ism because your knowledge goes deep. Its almost a disservice. But then I also have the feeling that you do it for you more than anything else. That is you and your record of listening. Which is fine. But if you want others to get excited about it you've got to think on how you present it.

All of that said, I want you to give up your blog* and start the classics with justin. That really was a good idea. And the presentation could really help it work.

* Please don't give up your blog

. . .is lying, straight out.

And before I go any further, I'd like to point out that I really don't give a fuck if anyone reads my blog or not. This is not about me being upset that someone else's blog gets more attention than mine. I've been doing mine for four years (with an Angelfire website that preceded it for the previous nine years) and I know that people just don't read what I write very often.

I was once into the "very long review" style myself, but it just gets old. I don't enjoy writing like that anymore (especially since I wasn't any good at it) and I see very little of it done well. True music nerds like the format of, "Here's my haul, here's what I think, here's some examples of why I think that."

Less is more.

And, I don't have an official tally, but the question has come up a few times in this post, "But did you actually READ what she wrote???" And my answer is, yes. It was dreadfully bloated, obnoxiously self-referential and tediously paced. A secondary glance and I'm even more annoyed. "But it's supposed to be a music blog!?" I actually said, out loud, when I read about a plea for attention, "but only if you're signed to a major." Joke or no, it's a classic example of a female using their gender as a crutch.

Wall o' text forthcoming.

>Fire was right, The Lesson does hate women.

Nah. I mean, maybe - but I don't. If anything this troubles me from a somewhat feminist perspective: why do so many women and girls today feel that they need to be skinny, but with amazing tits (of course), in a nightie to get attention? Particularly when this isn't in the context of "finding a man" or "making money with my body because I lack other skills and am hot." If this girl loves music and can write well about it, the gratuitous come-hither stuff seems like a distraction at best. And perhaps revealing of the same kind of issues that lead celebs to leak their own sex tapes or flash their junk while "innocently getting out of a limo."

Sex does sell and I do love sex, but I'd rather that writing be a meritocracy based on the quality of the writing. If she feels the need to take near-naked pics of herself to sell what she does, then I'm bothered for a couple of reasons. One being, is she right? Is she really going to get more hits because of this? What does that say about all the girls who love music and love to write, but aren't "hot"? And two, whether she's right or not, what makes her think that way?

I mean, if you don't even OCCASIONALLY wrestle with thoughts like these, I kinda wonder if *you* hate women. Or only see them as tits and ass, and a working brain is mere gravy. Not to say you have to agree with my take on this particular blog, but hopefully you can at least see the general point I'm driving at. The role of women in our society does bother me sometimes. I feel like they're all asked to be porn stars regardless of what their actual career is.

But this is probably the wrong board to ask these questions on. After all... the Lesson hates women.

>Kudos to those of
>you that actually read rather than judged with the first thing
>you saw.

I don't think the quality of the writing would affect my judgment too much. If anything, kinda like I said above - if she writes really well, I'd find the pics and flirty remarks even more unnecessary. But good for her if she really is into this and knows how to write on it.

A good couple thousand specifically tailored to hip-hop/old school black music, etc.

Does she need to put herself out there like that to get more hits? Absolutely. You gotta have SOMETHING that stands out. An appealing layout, great interviews, be the first to get new songs hyped up, taste-making reviews, SOMETHING that pulls people in. If it's T&A, so be it, it works more often than not.

I agree that it's troubling that everything a woman does, whether she's a guitarist in a punk band or a physicist, comes back to "is she hot, though?". I do understand that she gotta do what she gotta do to get them hits.

That's it, yeah. I mean, I don't want to make it out to be too much a criticism of her personally or specifically - it's more what it represents. I think our society has a problem with women. And it makes me a little uncomfortable when it manifests as a woman who is smart and talented feeling she needs to show off the assets to get anyone to pay attention to her.

You're right though that there's too much out there for anyone to read through all of it. You do have to stand out somehow. I guess this is her way to do it, and clearly it's working - at least far enough to have started this thread. I don't begrudge her that, either, but I did feel like it was worth talking about on a deeper level than "Can she write" and "Is she hot."

The original post is trollish and devoid of content.
The followup replies aren't much better.

The same post in GD would be funnier and unpretentious.
People come to the Lesson to actually learn and discuss music. There's not much new discussion going on around these parts these days.

first page 3/4 scrolled down:

Andre Lewis played that clavinet on “Down by the River,” and on Johnny “Guitar” Watson’s “Lovin’ You,” used by Just Blaze on Jay-Z’s “People Talkin” during Blueprint-era Jay.

ski produced that song.
