3k would probably be the greatest (to me), based on his bars and overall influence.

I like listening to Luda more tho.

Big Boi
Andre 3000
Lil Wayne
T.I.
Ludacris
Scarface
Bun B
Juvenile
Young Jeezy

...maybe I missed someone, but I feel like on all the metrics people use, it'd be these guys pretty much.

i'm not hating both of them are great but i'm grabbing names that sort of fulfill all the metrics people use for these lists.

edit: maybe even Bun B shouldn't be on that list i made as he's similar to MJG in a lot of ways (though way more commercially successful and in the cultural zeitgeist way more too).

prolific to an unprecedented degree, highly skilled and versatile, legendary mixtape runs that helped shape how music is released and distributed, countless records sold, and unfathomably influential — to the point when a hip hop artist *isn't* influenced by wayne it seems unusual

Comes a point where it’s diminishing returns IMO.

I’d rather hear one album of your best shit in a year, rather than 3 mixtapes and an album, all of varying quality.

I’ll take Scarface’s discography, including group albums, over Wayne’s any day.

For me personally, when an artist releases music too frequently I lose interest, especially if the quality varies so much. But even if it's all "good" or better, I still have trouble keeping up.

Blu is a good example. That dude went through a period where he released a ton of music, and even tho Below the Heavens was a top 5 album for me, I kinda stopped paying attention cuz I got frustated trying to keep up.

So yea - you can be too prolific.

Blu is a perfect example. Curren$y is another one for me. I like both of them, but there’s just so much music that it makes it hard to keep up and I end up caring less. I end up being selective about which albums to give a chance, and I ignore everything else - and there’s probably some songs I’d really like that I haven’t heard, because of it.

It’s not just because he was nearly peerless at a time every damn epicenter treated him like the definitive enemy at the gate. NOr that he redefined what “fun” rap was at a time you either went full nerd like Del or full pseudo-liberal arts like Cam. Nor that he came up rapping non-stop, so that he could efficiently hand wave both the NYC/DMV tropes he loved and the NO/ATL/MIA traditions he grew up on into a whole gumbo rather than disparate ingredients.

It doesn’t matter that he sucked as much as he sucked - that’s arguably a boon to the legacy of when he emphatically didn’t, as well as a lighthouse for the times when he randomly returns to being hilarious, or cold, or “conscious”, or dumb as fuck in the best way.

There’s plenty room to pencil push and/or do some Nelson George-type romantic handwringing (honestly I’ve got no idea where he stands on dude I’m just picking a guy) about Wayne’s full career and rightfully so…but that dude rapped his ass off more frequently than anyone for half a decade and birthed just as many try-hard imitators as your other favorite MCs.

Wayne was IT, and it’s silly to me anybody fronts otherwise, because their only guardrail is consistency. You can have Dre, Bun and a couple others enter the chat, but this man really fucked that chat up.

Honestly, I might even nominate Curren$y or Gucci before I add old crowns to my list.

That’s interesting. I don’t know if I agree - those RTJ albums don’t do much for me.

But RAP Music and his new one were both among the very best albums in the year they came out. IMO of course. So if someone is really into those RTJ albums, I could see why they’d put him up there.

I can’t say he’s the “greatest”, seems that should be reserved for the pioneers that influenced him.

But as a rapper and producer, the content and range of songs he’s made, and the overall discography….he’s way up there as one of the best and definitely as one of my favorites.

I’d put Phonte, KRIT, Scarface, and Kast way up high on my all time favorite list.

I know he never released any solo albums that were straight rapping but hell, did 3 Stacks ever release a legit solo rap album?

Ceelo.. can actually sing and when he was in Goodie or featured on Outkast he murdered whatever he was on.

while I think 3Stacks is the obvious answer due to Outkast..

Ceelo was no slouch on the mic

One of the best verses ever.

https://youtu.be/AEBEiiM-qMo?si=sBpNGk1d7p7NSOnC

Well I woke up this mornin with the same frustration from situations like these
Got a call about some work from one of them temporary agencies
No high school diploma or any college degrees
I can't enlist but they'll draft me if there's a war overseas
Oh please
Of course I can slice some OZs
But see I'm one of those aspirin MCs
And uh bills are due so at times I'm doubtful and everyone disagrees
But I'd rather struggle on my feet than to live on my knees
So my uniform tight workin all night at Mickey D's
Got about 90 dollars and some change after the government
Get they fees
These minimum wages ain't enough to feed my babies
Purposely these limitations on black folks opportunities
So I quit cuz I'm tired of being one of those overworked
Underpaid employees
Stop carin at all went on and did a few small burglaries
It seems like my faith done turned into forgotten memories
And I ain't gettin away with nothing because I know He always sees
But see right now I need to see how I can get this here dope sold
I done stuffed in my pocket as many rocks as it can hold
They gonna get high so I'm gonna get my money even though it's freezin cold
Now how many times you done heard this story told?
Believe it or not, there's some very intelligent junkies
But dependencies is eating away at they souls like disease
Anyone can turn into somebody who covets and envies
Unequal economics can easily make you some enemies
And the crime rate never drops so the cops ride around in threes
I knew he would have killed me if I did anything but freeze
They found the rest of the dope in some nearby shrubberies
In a dimlit room being questioned by these authorities
And they gave me some time in correctional facilities
And now my woman's gotta take on a man's responsibilities

I know he's now problematic, and spent waaaay too much time doing wack Weird Al shit, but dude was a lyrical force on those first two Goodie Mob albums and the guest appearances. And his rapping on those first two Cee-Lo Green solo joints was dope too.

His performance on the whole "Still Standing" album is an all-timer. One of, if not the best performance by an emcee in a group of four or more on an album. You mentioned "I Refuse Limitation" below, which is flames, but I'm an even bigger fan of his verse on "Gutta Butta."

aight chief.

i think there are metrics in these discussions are typically used to determine these things (impact, influence, classic songs/albums, sales, longevity, etc) that are understood by people regardless of race/ethnicity, lol. we can argue about which of them hold what weight, etc. but they still exist. Wayne checks the most.

but hey, it's cuz i'm white.

i think you can have these discussions and maintain objectivity when there is an understood set of measurables, which there is...cuz, you know that's actually the definition of objective.

which is what was lost on Hitoriki, apparently. unless he doesn't believe the measurables exist, or that these things are not measurable.

and most of the metrics you mentioned are largely subjective.

Wer can objectively figure who has the most record sales or longest career, or some other qaunative standard, but "Greatest" is inherently subjective.

for instance, saying a certain song is classic is subjective, because some people will think said song is, and some won't.

however, as a collective culture, i think it's pretty easy for us to say what artist's songs are actually classic.

there's subjectivity in it, but it can be measured (we could literally take a poll).

anyways, whatever. we'll be talking in circles all day LOL.

I hear Phonte's name mentioned but as a person from VA, I have a hard time seeing VA/NYC rappers as Southern rappers in the vein of Memphis, Houston, New Orleans, ATL rappers.

I always think of Midatlantic rappers having the best of both words Nothern Lyricism and Southern Musicality but MidAtlantic rappers just doesn't have the same ring to it though.

As far as Phonte, Greensboro and Durham are college towns right near those highways, and there’s lots of transplants, so lots of different musical influences for those reasons IMO.

I lived there in middle school, I remember rappers from every region being popular - Biggie, Kast, Scarface, Warren G….everything.

Its either Stacks or Face.

Maybe Wayne based on impact.

Its not KRIT. Its not fucking Cee Lo. Or TI.

I know we all love him, but its not Tay.

Definitely not the cop/nra-loving, tap-dancing, fantasy-rapping Killer Mike. Fuck that clown. Might as well list Rick Ross.

Its not even Bun B.

or just embrace that this has become "who are some southern rappers you like"

Andre 3K is amazing when he can actually be bothered to rap, but that happens about as often as Haley's comet comes around

I know people love Scarface, I never personally got it, I actually liked Willie Dee more than Scarface

In terms of longevity, influence (there was a GANG of young dudes who came out looking and sounding like Wayne) Impact, hits, etc I gotta go with Mr Carter.

There was that 2-3 year period where he was showing up on damn near EVERY song on the radio

he's arguably the biggest artist of his generation as far as commercial success goes.

he can rap his ass off.

his impact was huge and he's spawned off a million "children" in the music game.

he has classic songs/albums/mixtapes, as well as songs for all occasions/moods.

i mean, you may not like him and that's totally fine, but there's DEFINITELY reasons he's highly revered.

I used to be an avid Wayne hater. But in the past several years I've really come to appreciate him. His music may not always (or even often) be for me but dude can definitely rap his ass off, and is funny and an enjoyable personality. He's certainly more fun to listen to than a lot of the emo rappers of recent years. I appreciate his dedication to the craft of MCing. In terms of rapping talent combined with commercial success he's a relic of a bygone era.

In response to Reply # 58

Luda was much bigger than Wayne in like 2000-03. Wayne really started popping in like 04-05, and Luda was also still big at that point. Then Wayne took off as the biggest rapper in the late 00’s-early 10s, and Luda wasn’t really a factor in those years.

That’s how I remember it.

I was in college for Luda’s run, so I definitely have better memories with his music. But Wayne definitely surpassed him eventually.

EARLY 00's Luda was way bigger.

mid 2000s Wayne caught up then Luda's run kinda ended around that time but Wayne kept going UP til like 2012 then his run sort of ended (plus he wasn't even doing music so much - same for Luda around the end of his run).

I've heard Wayne say clever words, but I've never heard him use words to move people emotionally while being clever. Andre does that seemingly effortlessly. There's a deeper leve of thought and introspection that I appreciate from Dre as well. There's levels, as they say, and Wayne is just not on Dre's imo. Wayne is definitely talented tho.

Wayne is like a battle rapper who knows how to make commercial music. Andre is like a philosopher who can destroy you in a battle and make commercial music.

this is probably the most accurate descriptor I've heard of Dre in a min

I'll just add that equating Wayne to a battle rapper is probably highly offensive to the world of battle rapping

putting a bunch of words together ie gobblygook don't make you an elite or even moderately good rapper

Wayne doesn’t even remember a lot of his songs.

Face’s albums and songs just have much more of a purpose, and the production is better overall. Plus he plays instruments and makes beats himself. He’s on a different level to me.

Wayne largely made fast food, Face made home cooked meals.

The largest genre of rap music history in this state is basically within the borders
So when we talk about Face, sure but he’s not the biggest thing in the state
I’d put Devin against Face any day and so would Face
We gonna talk Paul Wall and Slim Thug? Nope, but they been big.
Chamillion got spoofed by Weird Al, he’s not even top ten
Lil Flip got recognition but who’s top ten in state is he?
Zro better. UGK better and thats just third coast
Dallas biggest rap export is The Dougie completely different vibe.
And that’s just a portion of the state.
South Park Mexican and Baby Bash the biggest thing in San Antonio and south.

Texas is Texas.

which is cool. you like it? i love it.

but you made zero points about about why Texas isn't part of the southern rap scene you just talked about Texas artists and their place in the Texas scene.

also, to say Screw has no influence outside of Texas is wild and completely wrong. have you ever heard a Drake album...like, even the NEW ONE where he has an entire Screw interlude called "Screw The World"? LOL.

They wouldn’t be wrong
Texas literally stretches from NYC past Chicago

Texas is about as fat south as Miami, further west than Denver and Albuquerque, and about as North as Nashville
The distance between Austin and Dallas is about the distance from DC to NYV
And these aren’t just geographic points. Like the cultural south isnt Texas, East Texas maybe, Beaumont, Texarkana … but Texas Texas aint the South

Which "Carter" album put him over the top 1, 3 , 5

It's not that hard to use a different title for the album.

Why do the lazy thing. It comes across like he doesn't care about the art.

If you can give that a pass then what about this

"Wayne contributed to a remix of Future’s “Karate Chop” that leaked last weekend and included the lyric, “Beat that pussy up like Emmett Till” – referencing the Chicago teen who was infamously tortured and lynched for allegedly whistling at a white woman while visiting Mississippi in 1955."

^^^^ Is that the words and actions of a GOAT ?

you pulling a specific lyric from 2013 as evidence and being mad about his album titles is quite hilarious though.

i'm laughing that you picked a single line from a rapper who has said 100,000 lines as "evidence" that it's preposterous he could be the greateast southern rapper.

i'm not invested in who is, or isn't, the GOAT southern rapper cuz it doesn't matter.

that being said, i KNOW i could find a line or two to cherry pick outta Face's catalog.

so yeah, it's just funny you'd do that.

The line is enough, a long drawn out deep dive is not going to change anything if someone makes an excuse for that line.

"GOAT southern rapper" doesn't matter and you are not invested but here you are in the thread talking about how objective you are and how you could cherry pick line from Face.(Btw way if Face has a line equal to that take him off the list too)

It's funny how you are objective but that was never extended to me. If I say something you about Wayne that you disagree with it means I don't like him.

maybe you do like him. it sure doesn't seem like it though.

but yes, i don't care if you think Face is the GOAT and Wayne isn't.

it's your opinion, you're welcome to it, and at the end of the day it doesn't matter.

that line is certainly cringe-worthy.

should we be cherry picking a single bar from a rapper to complete invalidate their worth as an artist? sounds like the answer to that question is "yes" for you.

Should I assume that your defense of Wayne is not your objective point of view about including him in the Southern Goat discussion, maybe you are just a Wayne superfan.

I already answered, a 20 verse deep dive will not change anything if you make excuses for that "single bar"

I said it was ridiculous to talk about him in a southern GOAT discussion I didn't invalidate his worth.

You realize you’re giving points to MCs for getting more white people to listen to their music right?

That’s essentially what you’re saying because the way you become the biggest artist is to appeal to the white market.

Why is that the thing that makes you the greatest?

I think people look at the qualifications for these things differently, and it leads to multiple different conversations, really.

I tend to think “success” is a part of it, but not the overriding factor. But who am I? That’s just my interpretation. Of the situation.

was a joke the rest of his life.

NOBODY was trying to be the next Vanilla Ice.

Between the stuff he did with The Hot Boys, his solo albums/mixtapes and also The Young Money Era, Wayne was a powerhouse in the game for a LONG time who managed garner critical and commercial success

Quantity does not equal quality, Wayne has been overrated for a longtime. Everything you listed was never on a GOAT level and it only got worse as he gets older and the hype doesn't carry him anymore.

This is why we had to have our own stuff (like award shows, lists, etc) and really still need them. This is why you see Barstool Sports and other racist outlets say Celine Dion is a greater singer than Patti Labelle. It's not that "no one" listens to Patti. Celine just appeals to more white people for obvious reasons. Yet Michael Jackson outsells everyone and ends up at #50 on a tRolling Stone list.

They would say Face.

There are also people like you, you know the 40 year old dude in the club trying to be cool with the college kids who think they need to ride for whatever is the most popular.

That’s the problem. The basis of your argument is all about what’s popular and has nothing to do with the actual art form.

You need both sides to the equation to be the greatest.

Your comment above “Face is for old people” is all that needs to be said in regards to how your simple mind forms your opinion.

But you’ve always been wack as shit so this is nothing new lol

The problem with the south is, they’re like Republicans, they don’t call out their own for wack shit.

So it really doesn’t matter if someone like Future is greatest in the south. Future isn’t a Top 100 MC of all time so if that’s what the South wants as their king then so be it.

They always seem to go left.

I’m from the South. Many people dismiss our intelligence and don’t really value our contributions. There are a lot of rational minded rappers from the South. I don’t like many outsiders definition of what is top tier in the South.

Growing up, Wayne was always nice to me (he’s a few years older than I am and I’ve followed him since Get It How U Live) but looking at his catalog now I feel like he doesn’t provide much depth. Just a lot of one liners and non sequiturs. He very seldom speaks coherently and from a perspective of someone like Scarface. He was more balanced back in the day.

Andre 3K barely has any solo tracks. I can only think of one; and that probably the only one he has. Is that really acceptable for being considered the greatest when many rappers from the South have multiple solo offerings?

Just my 2 ¢

As for the idea that Andre only has one solo album, I think ppl often overlook (or maybe don't know) he used to write Big Boi's rhymes too, so he technically has more than one solo album.
Even he didn't tho, it's hard to think of many who rhyme on his level, so I still rate him at the top. I do the same with Lauryn Hill, personally.

I have literally never in my life heard this. As far as I can tell, Big is primarily responsible for their big choruses.

trying to find it, but no luck yet. looking to see if their site has it archived.

maybe he meant pre-outkast? who knows. everything else I've seen talked about them collaborating on songs.

Stankonia. Nothing was ever corroborated. Cee Lo was the one that either first said it or he was the one after the rumor started that tried to debunk it. I do remember multiple people out of the ONP camp did say it was BS following the story.

its clear Big Boi was much more serious about his career and his output.

I always felt like Dre was too scared to put out a solo album and might have been the gifted lyricist but subpar work ethic.

Lots of other rappers have multiple solo rap albums.

The Love Below shouldn’t be considered as it was almost only singing; it’s also part of an Outkast double disk.

I feel like Big Boi has more of a legitimate claim.

I’m from up north but Pittsburgh always had more love for Midwest rappers.

I moved south right after HS in the mid 90’s so I have more respect for what they contributed over the years..

All that being said, it’s wild to hear folks not give Wayne the credit he deserves and it’s mostly due to bias.

He owned the south for a long time.

Like he's rapping! That's 90% of it! (not really but kinda)

And I get, substantively and depth-wise he doesn't do it for folks but I really don't think there is any rapper in his league when it comes to flow or delivery.

Like name a rapper who is touching this flow-wise, delivey-wise:

https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=lYATz3STgew

Like the dude's voice, cadence and delivery is an instrument that does thing with the beat that wouldn't even occur to most great rappers.

Yeah Eminem and Twista can do the verbal gymnastics, but I don't think either switch up flows as often in one song and ride the beat like this dude. Or this joint:

https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=PjqKPHZJgF0&si=044wHWtqcq1PT8Z2

Like we've heard what Jay does with the beat. And Drake does exactly what Jay does with it (same flow and cadence) and Wayne hops on it after hearing them dudes do it and finds brand new rhythms and cadences neither of them even touched.

Only other cats who I can think of who are as inventive with flows/deliverys and meshing with the beat are Slum Villages.

Again, I get it he ain't as substantively deep as a 3K or a Common but like so much of music isn't about message and obvious depth. Like what about all the great Jazz with no apparent message!?? Does Coltrane's Love Supreme need deep lyrics?!?!

I'm here because I was always attracted to conscious rap and was an anti-wayne snob for a long time, but dude is undeniable at this point.

Kidding, but sometimes at his peak it wasn't even bars.

I loved the "Shine" music video before he really broke out solo, so his 2000s fully soundtracked my own, but sometimes it could be random throwaways like this

"You not gettin' wet in the rain is not logic" from the Dedication 2 title track

Sometimes he'd say real simple shit that'd thud tremendous the way Andre could, and it'd weirdly hit harder because the rest of the song was so ugly. The Pharrell collab "Yes", only ever bootleg'd because it's problematic as hell, has

"Bedsheets so nice, bedbugs don't bite"

Vapid and mean as the song is (it's especially casual about rape/sexual assault, hence being shelved) he sounds so wistful for that one moment

And because I know the Andre comparison is loaded, the "Georgia Bush" bonus at the end of Dedication 2 has to be pointed out

"Same shit happened back in Hurricane Betsy
1965, I ain't too young to know this"

And I'm still not getting to "clever", though to be a minute into what's almost certainly a freestyle over an uncleared Ray Charles sample and do a Wikipedia drop (in '06, when Wayne likely still Googled via Lycos) is nuts

But, again before picking out an actual clever bar, he used to inspire hipsters lacking ideas for columns to just share their text chains about his beat selection - I remember when the Top Tracks column on HipHopDX would be flooded with "Hi Hater" freestyles, yet nobody dared to touch "Upgrade You" https://www.vice.com/en/article/nne9g7/a-year-of-lil-wayne-upgrade-u

All that to say, of all the dumb lyrics I could challenge myself to remember, for some reason if I had to actually answer this question honestly, I want to skip all the obvious picks from the rest of Da Drought 3 and serve this throwaway from a feature on a kinda forgettable Jim Jones song, "Weatherman"

"That gun got me walking like I got irregular knees
I be all over the bread like sesame seeds
Automatic with the money like Reggie for 3"

If it's obvious I'm being a little facetious, well I am, because as big a fan as I was/am I think Wayne was always more of a one-liner than a bar guy. Me being a guy that also always thought a bar was two lines, not one. But here's another "one" I love(d)

"Married to the block, divorced the cathedral"
("Standing on the corner selling porcelain to people" is the next line)

From the bootleg "World of Fantasy". Which has a heavier follow up that again reminds me of Andre, though it's only tangentially clever.

"Momma named Cita, I love you Cita
'Member when your pussy second husband used to beat you?
Remember when I went into the kitchen, got the cleaver?
He ain't give a fuck, I ain't give a fuck either
He could see the devil, see the devil in my features"

But even still kind of joking, except this really is one of the coolest things I've ever heard a rapper rap, the answer I clicked this reply button to give was from "Live from 504"

"The instruments are crying out, "Where the sympathy at?""

Hey, hey
Since you been gone, I been having withdrawals
You were such a habit to call
I ain't myself at all, had to tell myself, "Naw
She better with some fella with a regular job"
I didn't wanna get her involved
By dinner Mr. Benjamin was sitting in awe
Hopped into my car; drove far
Far's too close and I remember my memory's no sharp
Butter knife, what a life, anyway
I'm building y'all a clock, stop, what am I, Hemingway?
She had the kind of body that would probably intimidate
Any of 'em that were un-southern, not me, cousin
If models are made for modelin'
Thick girls are made for cuddlin'
Switch worlds and we can huddle then
Who needs another friend? I need to hold your hand
You'd need no other man, we'd flee to other lands

Waiting in the hallway with her arms crossed
Baby boy face full of applesauce
Maybe should have stayed but it ain't yo fault

In terms of the combination of skill, longevity, influence, output, commercial success, etc., you aren't finding another Southern rapper that hits all categories.

Honestly, everyone else that could be mentioned will be WAY behind in at least a couple of those categories.

And I don't even like Wayne...not my style in terms of flow or lyrical content. But I absolutely appreciate the skill, and everything else is undeniable. His influence is all over a couple generations. For better or for worse...a ton of the mumble rap generation got their entire style from unsuccessfully trying to emulate what Wayne has always done. Can't deny the commercial success, or the longevity, or the output.
