"Hey Cord Cutters... Got a question...Youtube TV"

Just got an email about Youtube TV. After checking the pricing it says its 49.99 per month.

This seems like a lot of money. Way more than my Netflix, Hulu, etc combined...

My question is.. Can this really replace cable? Is it worth it?

adjust to it though. Instead of just turning on the TV and getting it in...you turn on your TV, fire up whatever streaming device you use (Roku is most popular because YouTube TV isn't on Fire Stick yet)..then actually LAUNCH the YouTube TV app and THEN you can start surfing channels...
I think the biggest adjustment is for guests though really...like when my MIL visits, I gotta show her how to use it every time...

I'd say that if you have Hulu, you may just need to decide between Hulu or YouTube TV...they're interchangeable for the most part...except for Hulu has a few exclusive shows I guess.

I have YouTube TV & Netflix and i'm good..paying less than when I was on a FiOS Triple Play package...my BASIC Triple Play package was around $180 counting service and DVR rentals. That's really where the cable companies get you...them damn equipment rentals.

turn that on it will turn THAT on.

i just press a button on my remote to wake my shield which will turn on my TV. i hardly ever switch my tv to over the air. want to watch youtube or netflix just grab the shield remote. want to play switch? just grab the joycons or pro controller.

while adding channels that I couldn’t care less about.

Meaning it’s closer to cable both in price and useless channels than it was a year ago.

Still a better option than cable for me at this point though.

I find it easy to use, the DVR storage is excellent, and it’s got all the channels I care about, including locals. Overall I’m happy. They raise that price anymore though, and it’s back to slingtv - basically a much cheaper but also not as good of an option.

I really like the idea of cutting the cord, but every time I take another look under the hood (the cost for YouTube TV or Hulu Live, adding HBO and Showtime, etc) it actually comes out to more than I'm paying for the same thing via my cable company.

Unless I'm getting a net savings, there's zero reason to cut the cord.

the dvr works well. the picture quality is serviceable: 720/60 live and 1080/60 recorded for nba games. there is some artifacting due to YT's trash compression but overall it's fine

it is a little expensive for what it offers. i can watch some dude in latvia stream fortnite at 1080/60 for free on twitch. $50/month for 720/60 is not a good value. i don't watch tv outside of nba games so idk how appealing the channel package is. it's convenient to be able to add premium channels on a month to month basis but then the pricing starts creeping up into cable package territory

We had Sling TV for a while & this is better than that.

You get your local network channels. The sports channels they offer are perfect. And we have every other cable channel we want, except for Comedy Central.

I'm not saying it's the best or most cost effective move. You probably should see what it offers & how that meets your needs. But for us, it's fantastic.

But I do have DirecTV Now, Hulu, Netflix, and Showtime.

None of these services have yet replaced TV - or at least, what we know as regular linear television. DirecTV now is okay. I'm grandfathered in at like $40/month which includes HBO. It's VERY buggy, but it works for the most part so I'll probably stick with it for now. Hulu and Netflix are what they are, which is cool. Pluto TV is also pretty dope - it's like old school, put the TV on and sit back type stuff (also free, so thats nice).

But yeah nothing is technologically quite there yet. Which sucks but whatever. DirecTV now is probably the best option when you factor in price - but the bugs haven't gotten much better in the almost year since I've had it.

I tried it with with a free trial and eventually coped it for a month but it’s not worth it.

but I love that I can purchase it for a month if I wanted to watch a bunch of stuff or if there are a bunch of games I want to see.

Might as well get regular cable tho if you want the cable experience.

I started when it was $35 (a few months before I started it was $30 and I just missed being grandfathered in). It's funny looking back thinking I was disappointed paying an extra $5 a month seeing as where we are at now.

Since then they keep adding channels (typically one or two good channels bundled with of niche shit you're prob never gonna watch) and upping the price $10+ bucks.

At this point it's not even close being worth the money unless you are splitting the account with someone (you can watch on up to 3 devices at a time).

I'm apathetically continuing to subscribe since it's only $32.50 (split with my uncle) and because of that it's still cheaper than when I was paying the full $35 for my own account when I started. But the next time it goes up I'm out unless they offer tiered plans. I'm really only here for live sports, which makes the timing of this price hike even more infuriating considering we haven't had sports in 3+ months.

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt this hike, the CBS/Viacom merger meant either they could have all those channels or none. Still though, uuughhhh.

At the end of the month if the NBA and MLB return, I’ll be signing up with whatever service lets me watch those for the lowest price. $65??? SMH, so stupid. I would’ve kept paying them out of habit/my past happiness with the product if they just stayed quiet and left it alone.

does it have ABC, NBC, FOX and CBS too or do you have to do antenna for those? My location I only get 2 of those over air and main reason I was using YoutubeTV, thinking of switching to HuluLive. HuluLive is still 55 and gets regular hulu as well so not so bad. Cable here I was paying over 100 tho without a premium channel, ridiculous which is why I cut that. I think the Cable companies have streaming options too now I may check into.

and you need an antennae.

That was the biggest reason why I switched from sling to YouTube a few years ago - but that was just for NFL watching reasons.

yeah, I just looked at Spectrum who I have internet thru and they have a 24.99 TV Choice package where you pick 10 channels. That might be the winner for me as includes the local channels. Keep Netflix and Prime and I should be good.

I looked into it but I don’t think you get a good choice with those 10 channels.

I use the CBS’s app during football season for NFL and College for 5.99.

hmm, not sure, that would be a deal breaker for me too. My youtubetv won't go up til end of August so still paying 49.99 currently. I'll probably wait til then to switch to something else.

The buffering, the glitchiness... man fuck that.

Shit always freezes on good plays and shit.

In response to Reply # 32

then a frozen pixelated shot of dude raising his arms then cuts to dribbling the other way in 4k again.

Not cheap.

Only problem is their DVR is glitchy. If you record a game and try to watch it live sometimes it goes back to the beginning if you change channels.

30. "i cut Xfinity out and replaced it with YouTube TV for over a year."
In response to Reply # 0

and, for the most part, it was great. there were a few things i missed but mostly it had everything i needed.

caveat, the reason i'm back on Xfinity (LULZ) is because one thing i didn't factor in is the data it would consume streaming ALL content all the time so I ended up having to increase my internet plan to the point that i actually became a little cheaper to just go back to Xfinity in a bundle.

BUT, i have between 5 and 6 data users at my house depending on time of the year. if it's JUST you using data, you might be able to swing it.

42. "You may want to check with your provider re: the data cap"
In response to Reply # 30

We're in the same boat with respect to a bunch of streamers in the house. Our ISP technically has a data cap. Once it became apparent that everybody in the house was going to make us go over cap, I called them to see if I could get their unlimited service. They told me that since there was someone else in our market that didn't have a data cap, that they themselves wouldn't charge for any overages.
