It left a weird after taste. I haven't had a beef burger in nearly 20 years but I highly doubt it "tastes like the real thing." Meh. I really hate the hype around it, especially because it's a GMO product that heavily relies on lab-made ingredients. And the obsession over its ability to "bleed" is so weird and unnecessary. Americans are so... I don't know, man.
To me, some of the best veggie burgers are the patties made akin to the J. Alexander's/Hillstone/Houston's veggie burger. NYTimes and SeriousEats wrote about 'em back in 2011.

I do have some issues with the NYTimes article ("Some new veggie burgers are so authentic that they've been mistaken for meat" -Uh, nope!) but it's cool that a burger made from real food got some national attention. My attempts to remake it at home always fail. J. Alexanders or Hillstone's should manufacturer their veggie burgers as a frozen product. That would be be real moneymaker.
There are quite a few frozen burger options on the market that were not around in the early 2000s whent I went veg: Engine No. 9, Hilary's, Beyond Burger, Sweet Earth, Uptown, Field Roast, new Trader Joe's products.
Low-key, I like Field Roast sausages so the burger patties are likely good, too. I try to limit the frozen veggie burgers because these products aren't really healthy despite being plant-based...
I never tried Gardein's burgers but I decided to stay away from that brand after eating their imitation fish product against my better judgment.
I don't like Boca, Dr. Praegar or Morningstar products, which have been around for a while. Now, I like the Gardenburger at restaurants, but I don't buy them for the crib because they contain GMOs. ;-(
Edited to add: I like some of Amy's veggie burgers. They make quite a few: https://www.amys.com/our-foods?onthemenu=veggie-burgers&items=24 I usually buy the California version. -- "Music is not to be possessed; it's to be shared.” - James Mtume
