Work provides/reimburses me for this stuff but I think a $5k monitor would be a tough sell. I think the last one was like $1200 or something. The Mac Pro has always been crazy expensive though.

1)It is expensive.
BUT in Jan of 2005 I paid $3500 for the original 30" Cinema Display plus a video card capable of powering it. (ordered from https://www.expercom.com/ to avoid sales state tax.) With inflation it cost $4500.

2)I have no way to actually send content to it.
Not sure how this will work for a PC at all.

3)I really think that in 2 years a competitor will deliver something almost like it for 3k - I'll buy that.

In the meantime if my Dell dies i'd probably go with the ASUS ProArt PA32UC 32" for a cheap-ish $1999.

What’s the reason for an overpriced monitor?

>What’s the reason for an overpriced monitor?

Look, I but TVs/monitors and like them when they can be as good looking as possible.

But $5k is over my range.

But i was a Trinitron guy in the 80s and 90s. (With the visible support wires.)

Then I got a Wega, and then an HD Wega. (Same support wires, and weird geometry problems.)

Bought the 23" Apple Cinema display and then the 30". (Not great contrast.)

I'm now using an LG OLED TV and love it. (Even with it's aggressive ABL issues.)

I'd seriously love to see the ASUS ProArt PQ22UC 21" OLED or their ASUS ProArt PA32UCX monitors too.

So a monitor that somehow can produce 1600 NITS flash, and 1000 NITS sustained, million to 1 contrast ratio, with DCI-P3 and true 10bit color (wish it was 12 bit!) is damn interesting to me.

Plus, I don't drink - so I got $5k more in my pocket than most people do at the end of the year. Seriously, I can save for it - it's not something I NEED but its something I'd like.

I really really really hate saying something like this but I think Apple really is on a decline..at least for computers.

I love mac os, I loved all of my macbooks through the years

but uh...I dunno, 5 grand for a monitor? 1 grand for a monitor stand?

I'm sure the new unit is going to be a beast but still...they need to bring in a visionary who will think beyond improving existing products.

Overpriced blinged-out hardware doesn't interest me. Xfce does what I need better than OSX. PCs are cheap as hell.

A grand for a stand. The collective groan from the audience said it all. If you have to use a Mac workflow, the Mac Pro is wonderful. If you can use either workflow, go PC. It's really that simple.

The PC equivalent of this costs far more than 6K....

Im pumped for the 1.5tb ram capacity. Do you know what I could do with 1.5tb of ram? Imagine mining crypto with this.

this is supposed to be squarely aimed at hollywood and pixar like situations

its above above the prosumer market, this is some pro shit for ultra fat gear budgets. this is not for instagram flexing. this is like a red camera. and if positioned as such, the pricing makes sense.

I can see if you work in the industries where the budget is huge and the specs are needed but on some “I like nice things” I think it’s a bit obeyed

Of course, it’s your money so spend it on what you like but shit man... that’s a lot of money for a monitor stand.

I’m sure you can get one that’s just as good for half the price.

Now, do we need a monitor capable of doing 1000nits with calibrated DCI-P3 color space "indefinitely?"

(I'm not including the high light output of LCD monitor designed for outdoor use - they don't have the same color or contrast range.)

Well if you are photo editing an HDR photo with extreme highlights you just might.

And if you're editing 4K video the 6k resolution is appreciated so you can edit on a single monitor.

If the $5999 included the stand and mount AND cable (not sure the max length of the cable, it's probably 6' MAX) it'd be expensive for consumers but pretty competitive to industry folks.

Note:I'm not in this class of user but I can appreciate the technical achievement and hope the competition can match it and then prices go down.

The stand being sold separately for $1k is lame as hell - AND that it doesn't not include the VESA mount in the box is an extra slap in the face to CONSUMER users - which WWDC and every tech blog who covered the event felt too.

I'd like to see a consumer level 4k OLED monitor (liek dell BRIEFLY had) at $2500 - I'd just buy that.

You have to buy their stand for $999.

Or buy their VESA mount for $199 and then attach that to something.

It does include a 6 foot power cord and a 6 foot Thunderbolt cable.

Out of the box you have to lean it against something.

which you would use for film

the next comparable model is Sony's BVM-X300 which is in the ballpark of $23,000

You can find OLED monitors for about the same price, but if Apple seriously made a model at the level of the X300, its a steal for anybody working on indie film

Blackmagic is vouching so they might actually have done it.

But that's not what they're doing. They're marketing to average users AND industry folk alike. And seemingly, trying to convince average users that it's normal to spend $5-15k on a computer, monitor and accessories.

So Apple can go fuck themselves and the bridge they're selling.

doesn't mean they're targeting you. you probably won't even see an ad for that monitor.

also, Apple kinda has to do this if they want to stay relevant. Ferrari still has to show off the new goods even though most people cannot afford one.

its like when the Surface Studio came out and all the conversation was about price/specs, etc because they didnt jibe with gaming specs or microsoft excel specs as if those are the only two things people use computers for. its just an undercovered wing of tech so people don't really understand the demands are different

i don't really think the average person understands why the iPad pro and Apple Pencil are revolutionary or that PC for doing design or photoediting doesn't really REQUIRE a GPU at all

At an event that otherwise featured mid-level sedans. It just seemed out of place.

But yes this is obviously targeted at high-end workstations in Hollywood.
