The washing machine and dryer need to be in a separate room in the basement or hallway (Up or Down stares) or near the garage by the mudroom.

I had a ranch style home. The washer was next to the garage and the master was across the living room - on the other side of the house.

I never want my washer or hot water tank upstairs. Those are serious accidents waiting to happen. And I've seen it when things go badly.

I'd like to have my washer/dryer near the back of the house or at least out of the way in its own room. I need space for baskets and clothing, Ironing Boards, laundry supplies and cleaning supplies.

Why not put the Bedroom in the Kitchen? Why put a wall between the garage and the kitchen?

I don't mind waking down the hall or stairs in my house to get to the Laundry Room - I'm home.

If you plan on never leaving then do whatcahlike, but if you ever need to sell, you're gonna be screwed. IMO.

There's a reason why what you are asking is not done. Think About That.

like it's right outside my bedroom door.

But even at 30 steps, that's not a big deal. Then you have to take into account potential flooding and the ease of installation when replacing an older machine and if the plumbing even works in your space.

And yeah, if you have a big bedroom, you hang out in it sometimes. Don't need all that noise.

the master? your fav kids? your least fav? the guest bedroom?

unless youre single or childless youre going to have to leave the room to hang some of the clothes.

a rod near your dryer would be a good move no matter where your dryer is.

i do think it makes sense for them to be near the bedrooms.

The washing machine's plumbing and drain, when/if they fail, will be a huge problem for moisture, but you are also creating a venting conundrum by running appliances that need dedicated external venting, which also tend to be sources of high off-heating, in an area that is normally highly HVAC regulated.
Then there is however you run your dryer; building code doesn't allow any gas-powered appliance in a sleeping quarter (I believe), unless it is well vented. A purely electric dryer would work, but we're back at the venting vs HVAC issue.

But go for it. I've seen some weird things touring homes that fly in the face of all conventional thinking but were 100% driven by some homeowner's personal vision of functionality (fully exposed shower in a full bathroom, for example...shit and shower at once).

I was watching something two days ago about the I3, Tesla, and Volt
And the design choices they made for the Volt were basically “let’s drop an electric motor where a combustion engine should be”
Which works, but when you design from a different starting point you typically end up with something different.
Houses aren’t really all that different
Home design has its foundations built upon gender roles and income of white men and their nuclear family.
If you were building a house with the idea of long term living as opposed to future investment and mixed roles you’d end up with something different.

possibly a square. when i did the layout in hs i decided to put the bathroom in the corners, i think 3/4. bedrooms were on the exterior. i dont remember if the kitchen was on the exterior or part of the living area.

not sure how i would go about it if i really gave it some thought today. i know even then the bathrooms in the corners gave me some concern as far as plumbing goes.

but yeah basically a living room surrounded by bedroom on all sides. there would be a hallway around the living room.

is this a thing? would it suck?

I'd build me a quality home just the way I want, but it would have to be the last home I'd want to live it because overly customized homes are really hard to set.

Our place has one upstairs near all the bedrooms. It's a short walk around the corner from the master and one of the kids bed rooms. Slightly longer walk down a hall to the other two kids bedrooms on the second level.

First floor also has a washer/dryer set in the mud room for kitchen towels/guest laundry.

Basement is laundry free...more man cave space.

the major issue with it in the actual closet is this is really only ideal if there aren't that many people in the house.

so expanding a family or having multiple generations would pretty much kill most of the benefits of having it in the master closet by itself...that's way too limiting

it's trying to find a fix for a minor problem by introducing new ones

i feel like tech is really the only solution to most of it...quieter/near silent and self folding tech is what's missing from laundry moreso than home design tweaks

just cause the "fight me" challenge has me all riled lol... I see the value of your idea but I also think as mentioned above the noise is a determining factor as laundry gets done at all times.... I am now thinking hey it's throwback thursday so what ever happened to chutes? like just drop it down the chute.. 1/2 your issue is solved and the noise becomes a non-issue.. I guess having to haul it back up afterwards is enough for it to defeat your purpose tho

I had washer & dryer set for 20 + years (brought it in 1998) and donated it to my mother-in-law last year (2018) and it's still kicking strong. Why? Because I cleaned the dryer coils and checked the water hoses and connections periodically.

Guest over doing laundry, you want them in your bedroom closet?

Heat issues. Smell issues if you do a bleach or vinegar load.

Eats space in the master, more easily given up in a hall, etc.

Laundry sometimes has to get done at unpredictable times. For quality of sleep, the bedroom should be a predictable place. Dark and silent on demand is a basic standard.

Youre doing 2am laundry and your partner has to be up at 6am? You're fucking with her sleep in some way.

It’s more steps for us to dry their loads in our closet vs outside of our room.

It’s a one level house. 1200 sq ft.

and we use our dryer about 3 to 4 nights a week.

Once your kid gets bigger and you start doing more of their laundry you will realize your theory is ass

We camp a basket in her room on the top floor
Lug it to the basement when it’s full
Wash a load, dry it, set the second half to wash, put clean dry clothes in the basket, put wet clothes in the dryer, put all back in the basket
Lug back to the top floor. Let full basket sit for a few days because nobody wants to hang out in the kids room to fold and hang
Eventually you take the full basket to another room and do it
But during this time a pile has grown on the floor and you’re operating between three spaces because you have outfits and items that you needed that you didn’t put back.

A redesigned system could be set up to make washing and putting away easier and more conducive to the life you lead, not built around a life with a maid.

Right where all the gas, water & electric comes in/out of the house. All my shutoffs are in one area, and if anything ever leaks it'll just be on the concrete basement floor. Also, I can barely hear the machines run down there as well.

Whats great about it? What am I missing?

I just have the ones that came with my house. They work, but there's nothing special about them. In fact I kind of hate my washer. Thing takes fucking forever and its impossible to clean all of the nasty gunk off the seal. I never had a front loading washer before. Are you really supposed to leave the door hanging open to dry out completely after every wash? Also I hate how when you're pulling freshly washed clothes out of it some of them inevitably fall onto the floor. Front load washers seem to have taken over though.

I recently discovered that all in one washer/dryers are a thing but apparently they dont work that well or can only do small loads. That seems ideal to me though. Takes up less space, and I don't have to transfer the clothes or remember to.

YEAH, our front load washer takes forever and uses less water, so that's the treade off. An YES, you have to leave the door open to try otherwise you will get gunk and mold. Put a basket under the opening when you pull the clothes out.

The front load dryer is AMAZING. That jank dries clothing Super FAST!
