not tryna defend moby but we have seen plenty of inaccuracies in these types of memoirs that are just from poor editorial protocol. they werent necessarily intentional lies. just people incorrectly recounting their experience.

It's not that hard. I've had sex with a grip of people, I've gone on dates with a slightly lower number, I've gone on multiple dates with a lower number than that ... but dated, like there were expectations of where this would go ... that number is wild low


And a person as world famous as Moby, between time/people and just interactions over his life should know the difference between dating and just hanging out. From what it appears is that he didn't understand then, didn't understand when writing, and still doesn't get it now.

it seems the threshold for using that term is pretty subjective.

some people say dating when they were fucking someone but not serious.

some people say theyre dating around when they were just going on dates with different people and trying to whittle their selection down to one candidate.

if they were going out on dates and eventually lightweight hooked up in her room...calling that dating isnt farfetched imo. even if it was brief (which he says).

i would like to hear her explain how exactly it is that he was creepy when she was voluntarily meeting up with him and had him up to her dorm. maybe the creepy behavior was after that? iono but if so...im not sure why she said 'older man' like that was some turn off. her initial actions dont seem to reflect that.

"But she voluntarily met with him" is weird, and I'm not sure what "initial actions" reflect a different reality than one where we know exactly what she means.

"Something I thought was cool when I was 18, but looking back on it, that was pretty fucked up" is a big part of growing up. For most people, at least, maybe that doesn't describe you.

And again, the fact that he had the opportunity to say "well, I guess it just meant something different to her" and instead decided "no, we were definitely dating, she's a liar, here's an old picture I kept of us where I look like I'm making a Terry Richardson face and she's a few months removed from being in high school" is exactly the type of shit a creepy older person does (particularly since the first option is so much easier.)

i interpreted her calling him a creepy older man like someone who was being forward/aggressive/persistent with a disinterested party. like he was doing creepy shit in the way he acted out his attraction to her. or even just an older man pursuing a much younger woman in general (if she finds that disturbing and isnt open to entertaining it).

basically 'ew this nasty old guy really thought we had a thing in his head based off meaningless interactions but i was totally not into him. like at all'.

going out with him several times then having him come visit you at your college dorm (and hooking up) dont come off as reactions to creepiness.

All I honestly remember about him was that (IIRC) every single song on Play got licensed for use in a commercial. I don't know enough about that genre of music to know if that makes him a sell-out or if that's generally acceptable. Never really cared about his music much one way or the other, with the exception being that song he had with Gwen Stefani that I initially liked but can no longer listen to (retail nightmare.)
