"Record Store Day 2019 (RSD)"
Fri Apr-12-19 04:19 PM by BlakStaar

Who is hitting up the wrecka sto tomorrow? What's on your list? Have you participated before? How long did you wait?*

Full list of RSD releases: https://s3.amazonaws.com/recordstoreday/2019/2019_RSD_PUBLIC.pdf

I've never participated before. Generally, I can't with lines but I'm going to attempt to participate this year and purchase at least 2-3 of the following come 4/13:

* Erykah Badu & James Poyser - Tempted
* Fela Kuti & Roy Ayers - Music Of Many Colours
* Prince - His Majesty's Pop Life / The Purple Mix Club
* Pete Rock - Return of the SP1200
* James Brown - Sho Is Funky Down Here (Reissue)

I know, this list is basic as hell by OKP-standards but I don't care. I'm not here to impress nobody. I'm familiar with some of the more obscure material on the list; I just don't care enough to buy it.

I was interested in Herbie Hancock - Dedication (Reissue) but I looked it up and realized I can get an original pressing at a similar price point. I only buy new reissues on special occasions.

I wasn't interested in the James Brown joint at first because, reissue. However, I peeped Now-Again Records' website for the description and it seems worth it:

"...the first official reissue of both titles, each lacquered directly from the original master tapes at Capitol Studios. Each album contains an extensive booklet with full annotation, liner notes by Brown historian Alan Leeds and never-before-published photos. Single 145 gram LP in dress jacket. CD in 6 panel 'Eco-Wallet.' "

Finally, I'm currently drooling over these RSD box sets. Too bad I can't afford 'em or justify the purchase at the moment:
Soul Jazz Records Presents: STUDIO ONE Showcase 45 Box Set
VARIOUS ARTISTS: Sugar Hill Records 40th Anniversary Box Set
VARIOUS ARTISTS: Soul Slabs Vol 2

Gaining possession of the Prince album is wishful thinking, I know.

*My bad if there's already a post of RSD 2019. I ran a few searches in GD and The Lesson and I didn't see a post.

Okay, I take that back. I'm a little hopeful now. Just saw this online:
"Replica of 1985 Japanese Limited Edition Prince release “His Majesty’s Pop Life / The Purple Mix Club” originally limited to a run of 500, released in Japan only! Limited to 14,000 copies worldwide."
https://recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/10717

The official RSD PDf doc did not provide the quantity available and that made me a little nervous. I could have sworn I saw a copy online today for $500 or something.

EDITED: The $500 copy I saw was the original pressing, not the RSD 2019 release. My bad.

I considered looking for this but then I checked my Macbook this afternoon. Somehow, this joint landed in my iTunes library at 10:25-26 p.m. on Christmas Day in 2013. I really have no use for this cassette.

Seriously, I don't know what I was doing Christmas 2013. It was my first year working at a daily newspaper at a schmedium-sized town in the Midwest. I probably couldn't go home because I had to work or cover the holiday shift. I guess I went on a downloading spree?

I don't know but I'm so tickled by this discovery.

Few things I thought I wanted I really didnt when it came to purchase, lol. I thought I wanted the "Disco Godfather" soundtrack until I saw that 30 dollar price on it.

I copped the two Prince jawns. Still looking for the "Sugar Walls" picture disc. I think I might go back today and grab the Free Nationals jawn. I saw more than a few of the James Brown album, so I've been thinking about going back to get that too.

Lines werent that bad....think I waited about an hour to get into Criminal. I did get the one item I really, really wanted....the 2019 Wax N Facts RSD t-shirt, lol.

Waiting an hour IS bad and bullshit.

Remember - this is a FALSE scarcity - they hype you up, have a low supply then have you wait in line like a sucker for a hour to have the "privilege" to buy their fairly expensive stuff.

I never go - but I do have a friend who picks up a thing or two from me. I think I'm part of the problem.

Nah...not compared to the peoplw in line behind me? And getting there 90 minutes before they opened? I knew I was gonna wait...it was all good.

Like we used to do fro concert tickets. I could have just went to the store that NEVER has a line, but he wasnt opening early, and me totally missed on the Prince 1999 release last year, so I had to get it from another store, so I didnt trust that he would get it right this year. (Moods...who else?)

Is that a mom and pop type store? Pretty nifty way to clear stock; and it appears they aren't gouging folks with the records, nor with the shipping charges. $5 is pretty damn cheap for shipping records.

They moved, and had tons of room to put out more than just underground punk and metal records.

Their prices are the best in town, and their stock?

When I walked in on Black Friday and copped the Khraungbin "Christmastime Is Here" for 8.99??

And their RSD Black Friday prices were cheaper than my go-to for years? They quickly jumped up to number one in Charlotte.

The RSD 2019 edition is not going for $500; just the original promo pressings from the 80s. It should be about $30-40 in store. $45-50 on eBay.

Theres 14,000 of those, so your chances of making a couple of car payments with one of those is slim.

I never responded to my own thread.

Did everyone get what they wanted? Were you satisfied with your purchases?

Ultimately, I copped:
* James Brown reissue of “Sho Is Funky Down Here”
* Erykah Badu/James Poyser cover of “Tempted”
* Prince’s His Majesty's Pop Life / The Purple Mix Club

My go-to shop was too crowded. I came back several hours later and purchased the last copy of the James Brown joint. The guy told me the Bone Thugs joint was among the most popular joints that day. I left a little irritated because they wouldn’t let me use my punch card because it was RSD.

I talked myself out of buying "Vibes from the Tribe" by Phil Ranelin (not a RSD release) and the Prince joint but I picked up both a fews weeks later last month.

I almost copped the Sun Ra & John Cage 45/DVD set but I held off. I like the idea of liking Sun Ra more than anything. Some of my favs (see: J. Rocc, Madlib) cite him a lot but I haven’t really dug into his very expansive and frustrating discography yet. So, I held off on that purchase. I need to listen to what I downloaded before I spend money on that man. I already own two books about Sun Ra that I haven’t read yet.

Another joint I talked myself out of buying: “Return of the SP-1200. Granted, this sold out at all of my local stores but I was going to buy it directly from the Soul Brother himself here: https://trusoulnyc.com/

Then, it dawned on me: I still don’t have Mecca & the Soul Brother, The Main Ingredient or Petestrumentals—my favs by him. Gotta start there first.

I didn’t see the Fela Kuti & Roy Ayers “Music Of Many Colours” anywhere!

As an aside, Erykah cover of “Tempted” left me feeling like I could have had a V8, and I don’t even drink those. ;-(

I've seen the Fela/Roy Ayers in a couple of places (still), so I'll check this weekend if you still want it. I kinda do, but I'm not feeling the Roy Ayers side too tough.

I almost bought the Goodie Mob when I went home over the weekend. Saw it for 34 bucks...then went on Discogs yesterday and saw it for 20...immediately copped. I kinda still want the Free Nationals I think...and the Erykah record was no where on my radar. Hate that it sucks.
