"Poll question: Better collection of hits Beyonce or Katy Perry?"
Mon Apr-08-19 08:13 PM by 81 DUN

Kinda sad that I even have to compare the two. I think it's Katy. Beyonce has the image but not the songs imo. I'll give Beyonce this she's the people's champ.

Watching that NCAA pre game show had me wondering fyi

So yes I can compare her to Katy Parry because she don't measure up to artist that came before her, she's not even close. Sounds like hate but it's the truth

i do think she's lacking a lot in the song dept in general but i feel like ignoring the DC hits isn't the way to go

i feel like Bey should have way more huge songs though for the megastar that she is

KP doesn't really have that many either but she has more in a shorter period of time maybe

In response to Reply # 0

As far as singles I think Rihanna wins.
I like them both and though Beyonce is the bigger star, I think she would be able to go toe to toe with Rihanna but it's not the case for me.
More of Rihanna's songs hit my soul spot/head nod. Other than Me, Myself and I, Deja Vu, Drunk in Love, her others are good to very good but don't give me a 'feeling.'

Your post gave me a reason to rant about why I wished Beyonce's songs were 'more' for me. I wished she had more songs that grooved(?), ones that could match the best songs of (like u said) Lisa Lisa or Mary or Janet or Aaliyah or Monica... my favorite songs from Sevyn Streeter to Tamia to Cheri Dennis.

Imagine her with Jam and Lewis, Babyface, Organized Noize, Rahsaan Patterson's people. Not familiar with women writers/producers of that ilk, but them too.

Are you white?

Beyonce ain't no ambassador for black folk. I can call her out for her lack of hits. She sounds soulless and pop most of the time anyway.

She can't hang with any singers 90's... She not on Brandy's or Toni's level

She don't rank well fam. Not touching Janet, Mary... I can go on

Sad that Adele is out doing her

The average white person doesn’t even know who Lisa Lise is let alone would call these hits.

I’ve seen professional Black women turn into Beyoncé clones as soon as the beat drops on her shit.

Good troll job tho

Throw on 'I wonder if I take you home' and lost in emotion at any party packed with 40+ white folks and they'll know who she is off the rip.

Trust. White folks do know this music.

Personally, I think Beyonce definitely has got this over Katy Perry. But Lisa Lisa wasn't just a nobody. She's got R&B classics under her belt and "Head to Toe" was a certified pop radio hit.

the song with Sen Paul (Baby Boy).

All in all that's nothing to be ashamed of. Single Ladies alone, being a bachelorette party/wedding reception staple, is a major achievement all by itself. But for her God-like status it's odd that she doesn't have a more intensely amazing catalogue. Like mentioned above, if she had Janet's catalogue, she'd be able to run for president right now.

Most God-figures in popular music have minimum 20 - 25 major songs they can point to. Madonna, Prince, MJ, Springsteen, Billy Joel, Aretha, Gladys, etc.

note: they might not be classics to ME per-se (frankly, she finally JUST won be over with that Coachella thing. That right there was unfadeable) but I think these were popular/ubiquitous enough to last a good while

Destiny's Child Songs

1) Say My Name
2) Lose My Breathe
3) Bootylicious
4) Bills, Bills, Bills
5) Survivor
6) Cater 2 U (maybe?)
7) Independent Woman (pt1) <--- maybe too closely tied to the movie tie-in?

Beyonce Solos
1) Crazy In love
2) Me Myself & I
3) Irreplaceable
4) Get Me Bodied
5) Run the World
6) Single Ladies
7) Halo
8) Drunk In Love
9) Flawless
10) Freedom
11) Formation

point: never underestimate an "I don't need you" song, or something chantable

because we were younger?

Janet has a nice catalog but I also had my first kiss, crush, slow dance to a lot of her songs so they are special.

Just wondering if the people who grew up on Beyoncé hold her songs in the same regard as Janet.

I mean, there is a church of Beyoncé for Christ sake.

I'm not gonna compare cuz I don't need to since Beyonce is Katy Perry level to me.

I’m not say nothing extreme like Whitney or Céline Dion.

Imo Beyonce is more of a movement, I’m glad about the success. However, the collection of songs are definitely a stop down from the excellence of the 90’s, 80’s and so on. It’s to the point where at a time it was miles ahead, now it’s neck and neck

I work with a few white millennials who think Justin is the fucking truth and never seen Purple Rain.

This idea that Beyoncé isn’t viewed as a huge deal with classics is laughable. Younger kids who grew up seeing her on the screen view her as THE ONE.

Is there a musical song in there, or is just Sucker MC's level of rhythm and lyrics that pushed it over the top?

It's a weird song for a pop hit.

Katy had a great run for about 2 yrs (Cali Gurls through Dark Horse) but she's fading fast and her start wasn't as hot as B's. I also think Katy doesn't cross the aisle (urban and pop) as well as Beyonce does while B gets respect from both sides which I think is much harder to do.

And given all of this, Katy's singles tend to do better sales wise (pop+white) but even with that, Beyonce's album sales dwarf Katy's.

This is like comparing Fat Joe to Jay-Z.

But I agree, B's songs seem to hover longer and you can probably still play her earlier discog and get kudos. Especially with the 25-40 crowd.

Katy's songs seem like they were made for 13-23yr olds and are stuck in that paradox.

I don't like either artist's music at all, Katy looks more fuckable than Bae to me, but that's just me.

Anyway, to me I rather compare artists who really put in work to be an artist, and not just a vocal prop, like Jill Scott, Erykah, Me'Shell, etc.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*
