Anybody get their tonsils removed as an adult?

I've already had four throat infections this year and my tonsils are (and always have been) HUGE, to the point now where I'm having noticeable difficulty swallowing, and I'm starting to wonder if they may be the culprit here. Have an appointment with ENT next week who I'm sure will ultimately offer up an official plan of treatment here, but I'm wondering for those of you have gone under the knife:

- Why did you do it? How old were you?

- What was the surgery/recovery like?

- What has it been like since getting them removed?

I swear half of what I read online says it's a great move and the other half of what I read says it's a bad idea and can lead to further infections down the line.
