"Props to Andre "Prime" Vasquez for getting elected Alderman in Chicago" Wed Apr-03-19 01:22 PM by mrhood75
For those who don't know, Vasquez got his start as an MC in Chicago from the late '90s to the '00s. Recorded a few singles, albums, and made a few guest appearances with some prominent Mid-West acts. He was also a notorious battle rapper.
Vasquez got his start in politics in 2016 through grassroots community organizing. He worked for the Bernie Sanders primary campaign in 2016 and then become a progressive activist.
He defeated Pat O'Connor, who'd held his seat for 36 years and was Rahm's floor leader. It was a run-off after he and O'Connor were the top two vote-getters in the initial election. Times they are a changing.
As a side note, O'Connor did try to use Vasquez's battle rapper past against him. It didn't work.
That's five socialists in the city council, most since the 1910s. Six if Rodriguez-Sanchez holds on, but that still seems unclear according to the news.
