luther - its the original (would hers exist without his) - the TONE of his voice is so absurdly pure its nuts - the flutes and stings combo
lalah - hers is more of a vocal exercise (some of her phrasing, plus I think she uses a broader range) - the simple fact that this could event be considered is a no joke feat (who else can claim they equaled luther, the master of the song-steal?)

I like Luther's version even though I've heard Lalah Hathaway's cover and it's good but I don't care for Lalah's voice that much; I remember she did an album with Joe Sample and even then it was her voice that made me not like the album that much.
Like I said, she's not a bad singer at all, she can definitely sing, but to me her voice isn't as pleasant to the ear as it might be to others.
