Nothing but shaming tactics and snark in his post. Not one solid point about why J.Lo and not a Black artist.

Thank you for saying this.

It is an underlying theme in our music. Black, and I do mean the dark skinned, kinky haired variety, have created amazing music, lyrics, culture and a whole entire mood. It only becomes appealing when a mixed/biracial/light skinned version performs it to the masses. How would anyone feel about something they created from depths of their soul gets sold out and displayed by someone who doesn't even remotely acknowledge, respect or resemble them.

I don't think people realize how deep the resentment, anger, pain and backlash that comes from this impacts our identities.

So many other artists that could have done Motown.

Black women will continue to persevere. But don't think we will keep supporting bullshit.

I've been to a couple of these things...and the academy always forces their darlings into these specials

Brandi Carlisle at the Aretha tribute

Ed Sheeran at the Stevie tribute

This isn't Motown 25.

My point...when you let Clive Davis point these tributes...you're gonna get Clive Davis artists

Folks want a real Motown tribute...Motown has to do that.

The Grammy's always try to wow everyone by putting together artists that you might not expect to collaborate.

So the Grammys having J-Lo do this isn't a shock. She's still a pretty big name, by mainstream standards. She brings star power.

But there are bazillion better people they could have picked. There may even be even a bazillion better white or latin artists they could have picked.

I don't remember a 50th TV Special...?

There was a Motown broadway musical around the same time that would have been a built in setup for a 50th...?

They should be in control of a tribute to Motown

JLo doing a 60th grammy tribute is a symptom of Motown letting other people control a ceremony

So I don't think the issue is solely with JLo, it's more about expecting yt people to do better

...and we know better...

I'm gonna bet that one will be more to our liking.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/entertainment/music/2019/02/06/smokey-robinson-host-motown-60-special/2795232002/

And you're aboslutely right about us not being able to control our own thing. But despite all the criticisms, the Grammys still hold a lot of pull in the music industry.

just spitballing here but I wonder if its a case of old outlook mismatched with new perspectives.

Until Marvin Gaye pushed to release 'Whats Going On' MoTown was largely focused on making apolitical music

Smokey was of the time were people he witnessed music bringing people together

So, in the time of hardlines being laid down - i.e. you either with us or against us, i.e. fuck waiting for a turn, the time is NOW - his old perspective is I think getting caught up in the times.

That is not to say there were never overtly political/vocal performers of his time...I just think hes coming at it from a perspective thats not being counted.

That said...when my wife told me about the performance I scratched my head because non of it made sense..then again, I can't think of a modern artist at the mainstream level who would fit with a MoTown performance, lesser known folks for sure - well actually, shit, Raphael Sadiq would have been a good choice since he made that album or even Sharon Jones...wait, no...or maybe Charles Bradley...shit, wait...Ralphael Sadiq then.

were all available.

Now, could they have danced as well as J-Lo did? Prolly not but they'd have brought the house down with some serious Motown renditions.

It was a head scratcher for me too but I ain't up in armas about it. Shit! If you were really watching, Alicia mentioned all types of names except for Barry Gordy's. He was looking stupid standing there.

Then again, I'm getting old and can't hear too well anymore. Maybe they did say his name and I'm mistaken. LOL Was gon off that Ripple.

her age aint an excuse cuz she took her behind out there

she stay on social media doing workout videos and talkign about how fine she is

i aint mad at none of that

but she damn sure don't get to have it both ways

I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt ahead of time based on her flygirl street-cred (maybe she'll just dance over the songs....), but THAT performance at the Grammy's was wacksauce

Yup, that's what The Grammys are.

>she cain't sing
i think she can sing - but by no means is she a good singer.

All I could think of during the tribute was "Just put Stevie out there behind a keyboard and have him to the entire thing."

Note:I saw Ne-Yo perform with Stevie about 8 years ago and Ne-Yo is the world's biggest Stevie fan/stan. He was so respectful and he talked about how much he loved Stevie's music and how much he loved Stevie.

Stevie should host and do all musical numbers.

I hate to say this, but Stevie's voice is gone these days

the "I wish I wrote this song" dual piano performance was the best performance on the show

why didn't she (Keys) do the Motown tribute?
