"Is it me, or is this some of the worst singing ever (Nicole Bus - You)"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gbOocVqeXk

I got extra hype when I heard the wu-tang sample on the radio, but by the time the chorus came, it sounded like nails on a chalk board.

I don't know anything about the technicals of singing, but this chick just sounds like she is screaming.

Am I the only one?

Who sounds worst on a major release?

Fits perfectly with the sample because Wu has some horrible vocalist singing on some their hooks but it worked.

have one of the best female singer among us right here on OKP....
It's not that H.E.R. can't sing....it just doesn't have that "something"

This at least has a certain non-bland quality to it.

My taste is impeccable.

It’s dope down tempo R&B.

I'm hearing the appeal I guess....
I sorta get it.
I was intrigued READING about her and her talent (multi-instrumentalist, etc.) ....
Haven't come across the track that really showcases all of that though...
Everything is so.... mellow? ... mellow to the point of boring...
Definitely hearing that she can actually sing though now...I was missing that in previous listens.

You know how you throw on certain artist for a mood?

Like Maxwell is mellow but he also has some mid/uptempo 'grooves' but nothing about Maxwell is 'turn up'.

She's mostly 'mellow' but I don't think she's found her 'groove' yet.

She's still experimenting with uptempo IMO:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j56uT3CQsd0&feature=youtu.be

^^^From Taraji's new movie's soundtrack. She has the vocals for something like this but it doesn't sound 'right'. Like it was forced. She needs something like Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder).

Her tiny desk was a showcase of her talent but her recordings are all about vibe.

A few of my favs:

One of the most insightful things mistermaxxx noted on here was how LA Reid's drums/drum programming gave his and Babyface's music a certain bounce (it's in his kick drum, imo). Whip Appeal, Superwoman, There U Go, Shoop, etc. - all slow jams that bounce along...slowly.

That was the secret ingredient to alot of their music - to alot of great Black music in general. H.E.R. is still super young, so she has plenty of time to figure that out, still.

So that explains the raspyness in her voice.

I can hear the kernel of a good song, here. This would work well if she were the featured singer on a rapper's song. Like if Wu-Tang decided to do an update to CREAM now and used her as the featured vocalist.

The problem here is that for alot of these singers under a certain age, they've lost the essence of the swing that good R&B is supposed to have. It's gone. Because this song is not based in that. It's based in the thump-a-dump of Hip-Hop, which often doesn't work well when singing is supposed to be the focus.

Good R&B mixed with Hip-Hop is "Anything" by SWV. Or the chorus to Around The Way Girl. Or Emotional by Faith and Carl Thomas. Something like that.

strict Hip-Hop all day every day diet.

By the time Hip-Hop was being played throughout the day (on Hot 97, beginning in 1993) , Mary had already had a few hits. She idolized Anita Baker - she knew what R&B was supposed to sound like, at least rhythmically.

The song is actually a nice flip of the charmels sample, and with a stronger voice could've have dope, but as it is it's decent. Listenable.
