"Underemployed"

I have been at this crap job for a year now. I know I should be paid more and it sucks.

I applied for a job in my "actual field" as a trainee. I know I was qualified and I just got the "sorry" email a few minutes ago.

I almost feel like I should start taking jobs off my resume now.

It probably didn't help that I have grey starting to show in my beard...

I'm really at a loss on how to make traction in an actual career at this point.

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Going through HR just doesn't work for most people. If you don't present yourself as a full-on corporate sheep just happy to be there then you won't make it past these irrational gatekeepers.

My advice is to get aggressive. Figure out who does the hiring (like who makes the decision and who you'd be working with) and contact them directly. Network with the people that you network with (don't try and shove yourself into a group you don't fit in).

Edit: I took irrelevant jobs off my resume, and didn't bother to fill in the gaps. This is 2019, not 1959, and many people have been out of work for some time. Also, embellish whatever you need to (as long as you can do the work when the time comes).

Keep grinding but if you really want that career don’t be afraid to make slight changes to get your foot on the door.

My wife was like “nooo dye”

RE: Shave the beard or dye that shit fam

I'd shave it and rock the goatee, at most, for the interview. Once in, let it grow out again. Go the bejin route if you wish but that is a clownable offense. Even white people notice the spray paint.

More than anything, being dressed well helps especially for a corp gig. No sloppy ill-fitting suits with dull dry looking shoes.

Also, find a way, during the interview to show/display how you can fit into the organizational culture.

and nah, I’m not talking the paint jobs at barber shop dye job. The Just for Men type joint that looks natural.

I’m peppered up but when it’s shaved low I can mask it pretty well.

by stealth I mean making your side project, the thing you do when you're off the clock, when you have free time, when you get home, when you're commuting, when you're not playing with the kids....getting out there OR in there and honing your brand/resume/etc?

I know how it feels and I don't know your field or your methods

but

have you considered going through the side or back door?

By side door I mean instead of applying directly through sites I mean...

going with a recruiter (I'm a sometimes fan, on one hand the last recruiter got me a 40% raise from one job to the next. on the other hand, die blood suckers die.)

hit up meetups in your field and in your city

going up industry related lectures in your city

really just putting your name out there, if there is an industry there is bound to be a community in your city

using linkedin but being bold about it - thats finding people who hold your role at places you would want to work living the life you deserve and just asking them point blankly "How can I get like you? Can you please review my work/resume? Can I buy you a cup of coffee?" (yes I am for real)

set up some traps and lines - have that resume on indeed or zip recuiter

side projects - again, I don't know your industry but side projects is a good way to build steam

introduce some automation to your process using google alerts, IFTTT or some other automation service so whenever a job comes up you will receive information out right instead of having to take time out of your day to dig through the pile of jobs to find the fit

alternatively, maybe consider pivoting. like...I have a friend who COULD NOT get a job as a lawyer. then i suggested she look into tech. Now shes been at Google for about 5 years and caking like shit. same job, different application.

I feel your pain though. 5 years ago I was BACK in retail mopping floor, now I'm working for a global firm holding it down.

You GOT this.

Thanks for the advise I am tightening up my LinkedIn page now.

As far as SIDE hustles ... I have been thinking of how to monetize it.

I mean, I love music and I have a good ear for it. I did production back in the days (like everybody else) but I don't know if my heart is in that. I can DJ (again there are a LOT of those).

I think its time to have a talk with MYSELF and figure this out.
