Yep. I always tell folks that I can't say anything bad about him. He can rhyme and I like that he comes across as more thoughtful than most of the young cats.
But when he puts it all together, he just doesn't move me. "Middle Child" is fine. Nothing wrong with it but it didn't knock me out.
I'll always check for him though. He checks off all the things I say I want in an MC so I'd be a hypocrite if I at least didn't give him a chance.
Side note...I listened to "Middle Child" on Spotify and the static screen had me messed up for a sec.

I want to like him. I *should* like him. He checks all my MC boxes. Good writer. Hits on social issues and as you said is very thoughtful and thorough. Seems like a really, really good dude. Puts in work and puts other people on, but doesn't lean on others really ever -- his albums aren't littered w/guest spots. And this isn't a pre-req for me to like an MC by any means but he does his own beats too ! Multi-talented. Gotta respect him & his grind.
But his music puts me to sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeep man. And I keep trying. I try *hard* because of all of the above/below, plus some. I want to like him so so bad. I peep every album.
But he just bores the shit out of me like few artists w/his level of talent ever have. I can't even really compare him to anyone because it's so unprecedented. Every song someone recommends to me I'm like, this is it - it's gonna happen this time.
And it doesn't. Heard this "Middle Child" track last week, my close friend who's a huge fan, and who's been trying to get me to understand Cole's appeal for years now, sent it to me and was like "you can't hate this one !" And he's right, I don't. I don't hate it. I don't feel a single thing at all. Haha. It's just like "oh right this isn't bad" and then I instantly forget about it w/no desire to ever hear it again.
The OP mentioned Bas and interestingly enough, the only time J Cole ever made me feel *anything* (and in fact, he blew me away the first few times I heard it) was on Bas' song "My N**** Just Made Bail" which is just a fantastic song. And Cole's verse is FIRE. He attacked that beat like I'd never heard before.
But outside of that, dude has just never moved the needle at all for me.

he's not so much boring as he is mostly a surface level rapper. he attacks specific concepts with a broad brush and dusts his hands in satisfaction at the end of the song. he's a very good rapper when he wants to be (features) and his instrumentals, while not my preference, are well constructed and draw on the past without being beholden to it. i wish he was more inclined to think outside his perspective as a writer

I don’t think he has an album where I like most of the songs, but he puts out some great verses and tracks every so often. I agree about all 3 of those songs.

For a rapper who isn't wack, but isn't that good, but got some basic rhyming skills, got a flow that's not great but sort of boring, his beats are average but fit his sound but are never noticeable to the point I'll say "hey the beat is nice"; but he's selling albums, he got videos people seem to want to see, he can go to big venues and pull large audiences, he can headline while others are way better than him will be opening acts for him.
I say he's doing exactly what most rappers and emcees have been trying to achieve that haven't, which is get major appeal, views, and sales, but keep a (sort of) non-commerical sound.
Personally I don't think I've ever heard any of his albums all the way thru or even half the way thru, usually by the third or fourth song I have to cut his shit off and listen to something better.

No one said that. What they/we said is that he's boring. And nothing you said about his ability to sell records or sell out shows proves otherwise. And really there's nothing that you or anyone could say *to* prove that. It would have to be done by providing songs/verses/albums where you believe he was gripping or exciting. And even that is largely subjective.

i'm in this camp. he's truly making the greatest effort to bridge the gap between the generations of hip hop artists. cole sharing the video of his conversation with lil pump was huge. revenge of the the dreamers 3 seems to be taking the same shape as the pump-cole summit:
super street guys who are not that good at rapping like young nudy are in the studio with technical wizards like J.I.D. young rappers are recording with rappers that have been making music for as long as the young dudes have been alive. producers of all backgrounds, styles, and ages are working with each other. and this appears to be mostly all cole's handiwork. i'm very excited and worried about this project
