"Remember folks talking about Trump being clearly a smart businessman"
Mon Dec-10-18 11:04 AM by Buddy_Gilapagos

Early on in his campaign? The evidence being that he was very rich?

I wonder if cats still believe that?

A positive of the Trump administration might be some Americans lose some of their deference and awe to the rich and realized alot of them "made" their wealth by luck of birth and/or being outright criminal.

I literally overheard someone say "yea I just believe in him because of his success as a businessman" this past weekend at the bar.

At this point I'm no longer expecting or hopeful that the Repug base will ever come back down to earth. They have made excuses for and shrugged off literally everything. All the Russia revelations, the payoffs of the girls he (inexplicably) fucked, etc. The base only digs their collective heels in further.

It's been said before but 45* was legit not lying (perhaps the only time ever) when he said he could literally shoot and murder someone in the middle of the street and the Repugs (both in Congress/the political sphere and voters) would find a way to excuse it away and continue supporting him.

There are folks who voted for him but after watch this train wreck, they probably won't ever admit it out of sheer embarrassment.

And there are folks who see just how poorly things are going but won't admit that 45's administration is a clown show. They'll steadily contend that he's doing the right thing and making positive moves.

I'm almost at the point where I may never trust a person's judgment ever again on ANYTHING if I know they voted for him.

But I know some folks whose families have money and some of 45's policies are stuffing their pockets even more.

They don't care about immigration. They don't care about his tweets. they don't care about Stormy Daniels. They don't care about the alt-right.

They're just looking for his administration to do whatever it can to increase their loot.

We can debate whether it's honorable, respectable, patriotic, etc. But I at least can understand money & greed as a motive.

I'm not comfortable feeling like that. But my white friend is cool with his vote and what it represents and all that $hit....and I just cannot fuck with him thew way I used to.

They can be as greedy as they want. But a lot of them, especially the ones who always said shit like...

"I don't see color"
"There's no African-American or Asian-American...we're all just Americans"
"Racism isn't a problem anymore"

Those are the ones who've been really exposed. There have always been white folks who had no qualms about letting you know they don't give a damn. But the ones who argue and fight that they (and by extension, America) aren't racists don't have much covver anymore.

to keep it 100.

You can't cosign white supremacy regardless of the reason. Like I've said, there isn't a menu where you can pick and choose things about it you like and pretend kids aren't in cages, etc.

I get your distinction between questioning their judgement vs their character, though.

That being said...nah...fuck em all lol

Cuz, not voting for her (despite what was thought of her) was a vote for his dumb ass.

And I feel bad for even thinking the phucker even deserved a shot because there was nothing we could do once he was elected.

it was a question of "what if a business focused individual became president...what would happen?"

as soon as 2016 came through I quickly stopped wondering and had a clear idea about what was going to happen

I really would like people regulating business, to have some experience running business and experience not running a business and working in government.

shit gets real fucking icky, real fucking quick

before Trump we had Mittens and Mittens was out of touch and a touch touched.

I've heard Zuck's name mentioned but I'm not sure if hes business savvy or just good at being ruthless as fuck

To be clear, the point of a business is to maximize profits, but there can be a mid point between profits and being all about fuck everyone, pay me.

I dunno, but, I'm still interested in entertaining the idea..if the person in question was not icky and out of touch

He ran a failed oil business and the Texas Rangers before he became Governor of Texas.

I think his comfort with the corporate kind of delegation enabled Cheney to have so much power.

The people that believe he is wealthy don't understand the concept of tangible assets so only buy his persona and his projected name, not getting that there is little actually backing it up that isn't claimed, likely, by mountains of debt. Hence the multiple bankruptcies when some asset crumbles.

They're 2 completely different kinds of entities with different priorities, rules & responsibilities.

I don't think it's impossible for a sharp businessman/woman to be able to be effective in a political/government role. But I absolutely disagree with the idea that you can run the country like you run a business.

running a business is a pretty narrow sliver of the overall economy. Sure, to be a good business person, you would ideally want to have an understanding of the economy, but its' been shown on numerous occasions that's not actually the case.

Businesses are also frequently fairly autocratic, whereas our government is supposed to be democratic. So how running an autocratic organization somehow makes you super qualified to step in and effectively operate in a democratic system is pure buffoonery. But this is where we are.

In a generation of swine, the one-eyed pig is king.

This is kind of off topic here, but I didn't think it deserved its own thread. Others may very well disagree, though.

A part of me worries that Trump just got what he wanted, pulling everyone into the mud with him and prepping the press for a "why can't everyone just get along?!" reaction to a government shutdown.

But Chuck and Nancy held their own. They weren't gonna be used as props while Trump spouted cherry-picked numbers and ranted about his wall.

God, what a fucking melt. Dude's sitting around in the year 2018 thinking "I'm gonna roast the shit out of Donald Trump by pointing out that the Washington Post thinks he's a liar."

Thank god for Pelosi. It'd be cool if she had better politics and wanted poor people to actually live, but it's cool she can get in the room with the president and not look like an absolute dork.

Harry would have gone for the jugular and we wouldn't have even seen it.

The fact that 'progressives' wanted Pelosi out but say almost nothing about Chuck is very telling about how much attention they really pay

Sure, I definitely liked it when @Stalincum69 tweeted "Centrist dems get the wall" but that's not really the same thing as the actual coordinated, political opposition Pelosi received.

That was from the lipless hall monitors in the problem solver's caucus.

And whoever you're talking about that you think is going to bat for Chuck Schumer, they don't actually exist. So the good news is that there's nothing to worry about.

edit: I've probably mentioned this before, but I heard a cool story from a guy who fancied himself a Republican bigwig that Harry Reid's truest gift was killing political careers in the crib. He said Republicans believed Harry Reid was out there identifying future GOP leaders at the earliest political stages and figuring out ways to beat them before they even rose to, like, state office. And that they were *terrified* of him. Said he was the only Dem that was actually scary. No idea how true it was, but it was kind of fun.

Because you just said she wants poor people to die. Maybe I misunderstood, because I honestly have no idea where that kind of accusation comes from.

And she did face coordinated opposition from the left (not her left, the 'progressive' left). It was just the easiest part for her to dispatch.
