We started planning a conventional wedding; church/hall, flowers, catering...etc. When we got engaged we were big and grown (me, 33; her, 29), so we didn't even think about involving our folks in paying for it. It became a little frustrating, since we were planning it ourselves.
After many quotes, we decided to do a destination wedding. We consulted a travel agent, and came up with Las Vegas. We got married in the chapel of the Monte Carlo hotel, and hosted a dinner at the hotel's steakhouse. We invited our closest friends and family, so about 15 people joined us. Our parents stayed at the Monte Carlo, but everyone else made their own arrangements.
It was great. The hotel offered a wedding package which included a suite, rental of the chapel, dinner for 8 (we paid extra for the additional meals0, champagne, cake...etc.
After the wedding we stayed in Vegas for a few more days, as the first part of our honeymoon, and then flew to San Francisco to continue the honeymoon.
Our travel agent made all the arrangements and we just paid one lump sum for the wedding and honeymoon.
A few weeks after we got back, my folks actually did throw us a casual outdoor reception, with catered BBQ, pool, open bar and a DJ.
