"so how did you save $ on your wedding?"

I know its a lot of googleable resources (feel free to shout any favorites out), but I'm curious to hear 1st hand experiences too

where did you spend, where did you save, and what would you do the same or different given the opportunity?

did you pay for everything yourself? if others helped - to what degree, and how did you navigate that? did they offer? did you ask?

how low of a budget can i shoot for without fooling myself? i know there are magic people that have claimed to have hosted slick weddings for pennies, but when i start doing math everything costs dollars so idk

I think having a beach and scenic wedding is the move but you have to play with the chances of rain.

Folks may complain but it’s one day... take off work and have fun

Also don’t invite everybody you ever met.

Flowers die... don’t go ham on them.

Main thing is don’t try to impress everyone by doing it but unless you got it like that because 9/10 times you are going to need that money in the first year or 2 of marriage because something always goes wrong to test your relationship.

which i'm sure is not uncommon

but something outside with a view for the ceremony, inside for the reception

there are a number of venues that fit the bill, but haven't found any w a practical balance of affordable/available yet

I would strongly prefer a small affair, she would too in theory, but has an enormous fam, it will be a balancing act

In response to Reply # 0

good luck with that
but on a serious note
you have to think about how much you can possibly spend and be realistic with you r mate
i told mine what the budget was
at first she wanted to get married on a beach in charleston
not in the budget
so we chose to get married at Mandalay in Vegas...on a beach lol
our wedding ended up being their main page image so they threw in discounts
other then that it was in our budget

not really about cutting cost...its about what your budget is and sticking to it

charleston ordinances prevent large events on public beaches
hence...you have to rent a private home with a private beach
most likely have to use their caters
most likely use their facilities
starts adding up
we got quoted 45k for the wedding we wanted
nope
vegas was less than a quarter of that

which is something i can totally get behind - i'm a generous person and gifting makes me happy

cause as someone who can trend toward introversion and pragmatism, a wedding is otherwise at the bottom of a long list of things I'd rather spend on... property, car, vacation, toys, shoot even just savings lol

i'm sure a lot of reasonable people also feel that way

but im wary of being a curmudgeon - i know thats not the move

anyway thats neither here nor there

plus, i really have no dollars for any of it. any budget i can muster will be a challenge. I'll do it, cause i'm resourceful and mindful of doing the right thing for the folks i care about, but i'm going to be stretching relatively small monies for each component of the event - which is why i'm very curious to know where people made smart choices relative to their budget.

like maybe i have life fucked up, but maybe paper invites are outdated? can i skip those? can i evite this thing? i'm open to hearing nah dba_BAD don't play yourself, but i wanna know

in any case i appreciate your perspective

-my play cousin is a photographer, so she charged us little to nothing

-I'm maaad cool with the owner of a tapas restaurant, so got the bomb discount on the food

-My wife used to work with a minister, so he did the ceremony for free.

-We set the chairs up ourselves, had a bomb diggety playlist made.

-My homeboy worked for Mens Warehouse, so I got my suit on the low.

-Wife found the perfect dress at Davids Bridal for 99 bucks

The liquor was the most expensive thing.

We had it reserved for about 3-4 hours, and that included set up time.

Ceremony wasnt that long, so we had about 2 hours to just hang back and chill.

Mos def cheap but very impactful

we paid for our wedding over a period of 2 years.
at first, we thought we were going to print out our own invitations and other stationery, hire an inexpensive photographer, etc...

i would say we spent the most on the photographer - looking back at our pics, they are just OK. i think the photographer was having too much fun at the wedding.

We overspent on stationery. invites and all that shit turned out nicely and was worth the moeny.. but we had TOO many leftover and that was $$$ wasted.

DJ was cheap and dude was nice with it.

venue was worth the money for sure.

If i had to do it over, i would have cut the guest list down drastically as well. We were excited and invited all these motherfuckers. We wold have had something smaller and more intimate.

I had two cousins that got married the same year as me. Neither had a wedding. I'm glad we actually had one, despite the cost... It felt good seeing all my family dressed up and partying and shit.. My family typically dont do shit like that AT ALL... shit, its hard for us to even get together for the holidays.

everything else was very cheap.

the wedding was in a city park on a friday afternoon, it cost like $60 to reserve the gazebo

it was a pretty small event, with just our immediate families and like 10 other people not on that list or s/o's (which was still 50~ people, we have big families)

we had dinner after at a nearby brewery.

took the weekend for a honeymoon over on the west side of michigan at some b&b, then did a longer one a couple of months later.

in our area there are a number of city park venues that are more $ than what you described, but also include indoor facilities - and are way cheaper than private venues. It's how I always assumed getting married, but they book up so far in advance we don't want to wait as long as it would take to get one

We started planning a conventional wedding; church/hall, flowers, catering...etc. When we got engaged we were big and grown (me, 33; her, 29), so we didn't even think about involving our folks in paying for it. It became a little frustrating, since we were planning it ourselves.

After many quotes, we decided to do a destination wedding. We consulted a travel agent, and came up with Las Vegas. We got married in the chapel of the Monte Carlo hotel, and hosted a dinner at the hotel's steakhouse. We invited our closest friends and family, so about 15 people joined us. Our parents stayed at the Monte Carlo, but everyone else made their own arrangements.

It was great. The hotel offered a wedding package which included a suite, rental of the chapel, dinner for 8 (we paid extra for the additional meals0, champagne, cake...etc.

After the wedding we stayed in Vegas for a few more days, as the first part of our honeymoon, and then flew to San Francisco to continue the honeymoon.

Our travel agent made all the arrangements and we just paid one lump sum for the wedding and honeymoon.

A few weeks after we got back, my folks actually did throw us a casual outdoor reception, with catered BBQ, pool, open bar and a DJ.

Totally threw my fam from Pittsburgh off because I called it a BBQ but we were on the coast so there will be fish and crabs.

What was cool though is my FIL is from Pittsburgh too so when my showed up in Steeler/Pittsburgh fear everyone was like “ehhh, hold up”

Having an open bar was what did it. That and the hotel we had it at wasn't super expensive, until you got to all of the individual fees on top of the main costs (we didn't even have a DJ, just a playlist on a laptop we made ourselves, but it still cost like $300 to plug it into their speakers.) The people who mentioned parks/zoos/museums did it right. And make them pay for their own liquor.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

There is usually one supermarket locally that has a good artist doing cake decorations...much cheaper than going to a bakery.

Do a small fancy cake for the top, and serve something from the supermarket for guests.

If you know any chef/cooks, ask them to prepare main dishes, then order sides from local restaurants.

First wedding, got married at an art gallery, my ex had her college friend play the harp, my father in law catered (he has a dope restaurant), and we ate right there in the gallery, finger food and cajun dishes. My father did the cake.

Second wedding, wifey's job has a japanese garden..did the ceremony there and then did the reception in an art gallery. Friends cooked for us, my father did the cake again.

Both of these weddings were under 3k.
