LOS ANGELES -- A high school music teacher in Maywood was arrested Friday after a classroom fistfight between him and a student was caught on video, officials said.

Marston Riley, 64, was taken into custody on suspicion of child abuse and causing great bodily injury on a child after the brawl at Maywood Academy High School on Pine Avenue was reported to authorities around 1:30 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Joana Warren, a public information officer with the department, KTLA reported.

Detectives with the agency's Special Victims Bureau are now investigating the case, Warren added.

Students who spoke with KTLA Friday night were all sympathetic to Riley, saying the classmate involved had pushed him to the brink.

The students said the confrontation began after Riley asked the young man to leave the classroom because he wasn't wearing a proper uniform.

The student allegedly refused, and cellphone video captured by another student shows him challenging the instructor, using profanity and repeatedly hurling a racial slur at Riley, who is black.

The situation escalates further after the student throws a basketball at Riley, who is then seen pulling out his cellphone to call for backup.

The student continues to insult and provoke Riley. The teacher holds his composure for a time but then punches the boy in the face, swiftly and without warning.

The ensuing brawl lasts about 30 seconds, with the pair clambering across the room as Riley repeatedly delivers blows and others in the classroom shriek. The boy is only able to deliver about one punch.

The video shows Riley continued to aggressively pursue the student even after other school officials responded to break up the fight.

The footage ends as the student is being pulled from the room by campus staff.

Several students spoke with KTLA Friday night on the condition of anonymity.

One alleged that the situation was a setup.

"Everything was planned out," he said. "There were students there who were already taking out their phones to record the incident. I don't think it's completely fair that they're just putting the blame all on (Riley), when I personally know that he's a good guy."

Another spoke up in defense of the music instructor's character.

"I had this teacher before and I had no problem with him," that student said. "He was a really nice teacher, I always respected him. He always had a really good relationship with every student."

Inmate records show Riley was arrested and held on $50,000 bail.

He was released on bail Saturday, KTLA reported.

His arraignment is scheduled on Nov. 30.

Little fucker deserved everything he got and then some. Frankly I think he earned a bit more "then some" than he got.

This really comes down to a simple question:

Was it worth it?

And the answer is NO. Absolutely not.

The kid may have earned every blow, but those were some expensive shots for the teacher. Perhaps it can be argued that the teacher could/should have done something, anything else. And while I think there's a a definite limit to all such social contracts, the cost of giving so.eone what they deserve is usually too high.

To me, this video validates the OP’s video. Aka teachers don’t feel supported and safe so they are taking matters into their own hands when someone’s kid come at them crazy. You dream that the adult could defuse the situation but it ain’t always that easy.

Something has to happen for kids to stop being so comfortable talking and acting sideways to adults in authority positions.

And, in general, calling a 64-year old black man a nigger is foolish. He’s lucky dude didn’t do him far dirtier. My pops is a few year older. I think he’d shoot a person for something like that. It comes down to understanding history and having a basic amount of home training. I refuse to believe that kid had either.

Right. But things are in a bad place.

Lots of Black folks live in fear that a cop or scared person will snap and hurt/kill one of their kids in a situation that is not confrontational. In the same universe, the same black folks have to turn yet another cheek when somebody else’s fucked off kids actually does confront them. I am still talking about lack of support here. Or at least I think I am. It isn’t just about the word. It’s about the lack of respect from many kids towards adults. I grew up in a world where consequences existed and the threat of consequences loomed. So most folks felt like they couldn’t do the type of stuff folks do now: mainly, most kids felt unsafe to come at any adult sideways.

As for the OP thing, few old man punches isn’t that big of a deal. It isn’t like he threw any one shot kill punches on the kid. The saddest thing is that too many folks will support the kid and ‘respect adults’ will not be learned.

Zoomed in this teacher thing, it sure does seem like we are asking a lot of these teachers in these shaky situations around these borderline dangerous and absolutely off-base kids. They’re supposed to have their head on a swivel for a shooter to protect the kids. At the same time, they have be able to fight back the urge to fight back when a kid puts hands on them. Or throws something at them. Or is aggressive and disrespectful towards them. And then parents want to be shocked when ‘their kid doesn’t learn anything’ at school. If earth can’t send decent kids to schools, there’s no framework for teachers to teach.
