"this Honduras caravan"
Sat Oct-20-18 11:43 AM by Crash Bandacoot

LOL. i first heard about this caravan a few days ago, didn't think too much about it
because so many other things are going on right now. thought it was just a small
group of people, now i look and the small crowd has completely swelled out of
imagination (last time i checked, 4000+) and they look determined, tired, hungry,
and angry. yt people on twitter are freaking out, they think it's an invasion and the
democrats and george soros wanted this to happen.

i'm curious to see how mexico/honduras/us/canada handle this situation, it's not
going to be pretty.

https://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Honduras-Declares-State-Of-Emergency-For-Drought--20180815-0026.html

ajor drought has ruined crops and left livestock dead in two southern provinces of Honduras causing famine and a government-declared state of emergency.

The Government of Honduras declared a state of emergency in the provinces of El Valle and Choluteca because of drought.

Honduras: President Signs Decree Paving Way for Dialogue

Edgar Murillo, a mayor in one of the hard hit areas told local media there are families going hungry because of the drought and its effects on their farms.

"Many families that are dedicated to producing basic grains sell a part and keep another for self-consumption. Unfortunately, this year, 40 of the milpas (family gardens) were lost (and) people with no resources have not been able to feed themselves," Murillo said.

In addition, livestock is dying because of the lack of grass to feed on.

Across the two provinces in the southern section of the country, 72 percent of corn and 75 percent beans have been lost, according to the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG).

President Juan Orlando Hernandez met with his cabinet on Wednesday to determine a course of action.

The state of emergency will be in place from August 15 until December 31.

About 65,500 families require emergency food in 34 municipalities, says the government.

migrant/refugee surges being exploited by far right politicians.

in europe...far right/fascist parties ascending because of it. even in brazil...the influx of venezuelan refugees is having a profound political effect there too (a far right trump like candidate is about to win the presidential election). its even an issue in
myanmar/indonesia.

one of the reasons putin helped waged such a destructive campaign in syria is because he knew he could help exploit the fleeing refugees to the advantage of pro-kremlin far right euro parties and help destabilize the eu/nato.

one big common piece to all of this tho...facebook. its being used for massive anti-refugee/immigrant disinfo campaigns that are inflaming native sentiment against 'outsiders'. allowing demagogues to capitalize.

just look at whats going on in venezuela/brazil and you will see a lot commonality to us/europe.

basically their election strategy focuses on something different every few weeks/months.

tax cuts flopped. ms-13 flopped. kavanaugh/angry mob is dying down.

now you have the caravan and republicans nationwide running on protecting obamacare pre-existing conditions that they all literally voted to dismantle and even launched a lawsuit to get rid off. just blatant fearmongering on one end and outright lying on the other end.

we got a dumb ass voting population so the shit will prolly work too smh.

im not a big conspiracy theorist but 'illegal aliens yelling obama campaign slogan' seems a lil too on the nose.

the way the media is playing into this knowing damn well these folks are like 1500 miles away and the large majority of them wont make it to our border and the ones that do make it will largely be turned away...they either never learn or are willingly complicit.

doesn't seem like they give a f*ck about trump, they want jobs and a better way of

the same. was just in trader joe's with 'honduras' stickers all over the bananas.

the majority of them will walk almost all the way with very little food and water. they average like 20 miles a day so far (early in their journey when they are the most invigorated and healthy). that pace (if continuous) would take 6 months to reach our border. thats before factoring in fatique, declining health, discouragement, etc.

which is why most of last caravan just gave up and settled down in mexico (mostly mexico city). and just dozens reached our border.

seriously...*nobody* will be talking about any of this after the midterms.

the way the media is sensationalizing this without proper context or historical frame of reference is destructive.

Forget Trump Hysteria, Here’s How the Migrant Caravan ‘Crisis’ Really Began

daily beast partial swipe for what its worth

https://www.thedailybeast.com/forget-trump-hysteria-heres-how-the-migrant-caravan-crisis-really-began

ABOUT A MONTH AGO, when Fuentes first became aware of small groups dispersed throughout Honduras that were organizing among themselves to make the trek north, he decided to help out, just as he had done with a previous migrant caravan last April—and indeed throughout his life.

At the time, all the groups combined numbered no more than 200 people, Fuentes says. As someone who had helped repatriate the bodies of many migrants who died in the journey al Norte, he was acutely aware of the dangers and wanted to help ensure the people’s safety.

“No one expected this human avalanche,” he told The Daily Beast in a phone call from the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa.

But then a report on the country’s most-watched cable news channel, HCH, painted a picture of the caravan that changed everything. The anchors interviewed a woman who was supposedly part of the caravan. The woman talked about safety in numbers, called Fuentes the organizer and mentioned foreign assistance. The anchors, without any supporting evidence, then said that Fuentes would pay for the migrants’ food and transportation.

Fuentes was later interviewed by the anchors and strongly refuted what was said, but by then the damage was done.

“When I saw the news report, I said ‘This is my opportunity,’” said Gustavo Montoya, 57, a migrant in the caravan whose face was sunburned and eyes were sparkling as he arrived in the this town in southern Mexico. “It grabbed my attention that we could pass easily. It impressed a lot of people.”

“After that news program I started to get hundreds of calls, then it took on a life of its own,” said Fuentes. “In Honduras, the government wants to minimize why people are leaving—they know they are going to leave and they want to say they are doing so because of lies and the opposition, not the conditions that they created. This is in line with what the United States is saying—that there are false promises being made. And this pro-government news program played into that messaging, trying to say that there is financing when really people just need to get out.”

Soon afterward, Hondurans from across the country headed west to join the caravan, which swelled by the thousands. Many were propelled to join by the HCH report, but the majority were people who had been considering migration for a long time and now saw an opportunity to head north with added safety in numbers and without having to pay a coyote, which can cost as much as $7,000.

“We are in the middle of a crisis in Honduras,” said Fuentes’ wife Dunia Montoya, who shares her husband’s academic aura and is also a journalist and migration activist. “In Honduras 300 people leave daily. What frightens the world is the accumulation of a week or two of people that concentrated together, but in Honduras we have been living in a humanitarian crisis since long ago.”

accepting 5000 refugees wouldnt even be a blip on our radar. we take on 120k+ from china and india each and nobody even cares about that.

its funny how trump/repubs brag about us not having enough people to fill all of the tremendous job opportunities that are available under the mythical trump boom. but they also try to shut out a historically significant part of that workforce.

the backbone of the great american economic miracle has been immigration (legal and illegal). without immigrants...we are a dying nation (economically and literally...with white americans dying faster than they are reproducing).

I wouldn't call myself an open border person. But I know we could easily accept all these people in a heartbeat.

Heck my little hometown in VA has a depopulation (7k people) issue and I wish we could take them all (with some screening and assimilation programs).

This is a very complicated issue. And there are multiple sides to the morality argument. I am going to present one side of it.

I have no issues with accepting immigrants. The more the merrier. We can use plenty more. But the process that they become immigrants matters.

There are millions of people all over the world with refugee applications to the US being evaluated. Only a small fraction of those will be approved (this is not a Trump phenomenon).
As a child of refugees, I realize the hardship that these people are trying to escape (multiple family members are still trying to get out). I also realize that there are millions of others who face the same hardship (even from the same countries as the caravan), but are not able to make the journey to the land border.

The fact that they have the opportunity to present themselves in person at the border should not make them a priority in the immigration process imo.

Just like a person from Iraq on a student visa should not be able to overstay his visa, claim asylum, and fast forward the process to stay in the US while his fellow countrymen wait in line.

There needs to be rules and order in the immigration process. Flooding the gates with numbers or simply showing up in person shouldn't force us to change the rules to the detriment of others

You do realize the Trumpster administration has completely dicked up the entire aslyum seeking process

?

You can't say they have to go through the legal process like everyone else

When this administration is making changes on a daily basis to said process

Let's take your Iraqi on a student visa example

They apply...get accepted...but then the administration bans them from entering the coun...

...oh wait, that actually happened...

+1, putting your feet on US soil is the first step for asylum seekers in said process.

But what I'm talking about has nothing to do with that.

What I'm talking about can be boiled down to a simple comparison: asylum seeker vs refugee applicant.

What is the difference between a Honduran asylum seeker and Honduran refugee applicant?

Refugees apply from outside the US.
Asylum seekers apply from inside the US or at a US port of entry.

That is the only difference. The people in the caravan are looking to claim asylum. Hondurans current in Honduras (likely facing the exact same conditions) would be applying as refugees.

My point was why should the asylum seekers in the caravan be looked at as a priority over all other refugee applicants?

I'm not understanding why doing one would detract from the other

?

Honestly, that's not what's even dicking up the system the most

it's the deportations that has the department so far behind

The number of asylum seekers is actually decreasing (probably due to the child separation policy) under Trumpster

https://americanimmigrationcouncil.org/sites/default/files/styles/panopoly_image_original/public/wysiwyg_uploads/american_immigration_council/asylum_in_the_united_states_figure-1.png?itok=jwvJKird

We were almost at 40K after 911

https://www.dhs.gov/immigration-statistics/yearbook/2016/table16

what's the problem with processing almost half that number now?

This is the thing. Yes, they are processing refugee applications at the port of entry for these asylum seekers. Should they be looked at and approved before the hundreds of thousands (millions?) of other applications?

acknowledging that this is a very complex issue that demands more consideration than a knee-jerk hot take is important. the human suffering in central america is terrible. but open borders aren't workable. the idea that the right solution is easy and obvious ignores reality. we need to figure this out and not let ourselves get polarized into two simple-minded camps based more on opposition to one another than nuanced understanding of the situation. i'm open to the idea that we should let these Hondurans in, but we need figure out how to do so legally in a way that sets sustainable precedents

what about people from other countries? should a certain group be pushed
before others? if so why? is their suffering perceived to be greater? cause i see
some nikes and iphones in the mix. what are the parameters? who would be the
owner of those parameters? is it the aggressive posture that gets them in? it sets a
precedent. if another group displayed those same characteristics would they be let
in as well?

lots of punting with this immigration issue, of their own doing, with no clear
leadership.

is opaque and seemingly lodged un-democratically in the executive branch. the people should have some say on all of this, but current levels of discourse make me skeptical that we can carry a national conversation on this to effective ends. so the govt makes these decisions basically in secret. and it's one thing when you've got Obama sort of maintaining a lawless but fairly humane status quo, but quite another when you've got Trump and the goon squad calling the shots. would be nice if congress could wake up and, you know, lead the country to a better place, but clearly cooperation is passe. gotta elect people who will transcend petty party lines, imo.

we are militarily active in

I think that would put a big wrench in the military invasions and influence

i.e we bomb Iraq = Iraqi citizens (after being vetted of course) are automatically eligible for asylum

I don't have an in depth knowledge of how this thing works

But I do know it goes back to the 19th century

We basically took their land from them for crops, Big Fruit Int.

and we've been militarily active ever since then

The Monroe Doctrine

Military coups, Assassinations, Etc...

We basically cut the world in half and decided we run everything west of the prime meridian

Kind of shitty to then turn your backs on the same people that we've profited off of

Has to be something to learn from this and stop it from happening

What that is...?

my understanding is that most economists agree the US could benefit from more immigration but allowing in large numbers of immigrants without the skills to succeed in the modern economy, isn't exactly what they're talking about. there is a glaring uncertainty about what job skills will be needed in the future to drive economic growth. and currently the social safety nets in the US are pretty ragged and may be incapable of accommodating large influxes of people who will rely on them to some degree.

so i do think we have a moral duty to help people living in terrible conditions that the USA in large part created. but what that help looks like is unclear to me. these people walking north are clearly resilient as fuck and maybe the answer is to just let them in and fend for themselves. but in an ideal world it seems like we'd have better systems to help them assimilate and succeed here than we currently do.

We've only been non-open boarders for less than 100 years.

How did Ellis island work? All those Irish, German, Italian Immigrants weren't filling out paperwork in their homeland before showing up. They just showed up.

Admittedly since travel is lot easier now there has to be some order to it, but the truth is this country can accept 100x the amount of people we currently accept and ingest them an acclimate them to this Country if we wanted to. This is a big ass country with tons of area experiencing depopulation and could use more people and the biggest barrier to that is xenophobia.

There absolutely doesn't need to be rules or order in the immigration process. These borders aren't natural constructs; they're artificial ones. We decide where they go; what they represent; and how they function.

I'm sure a lot of us saw this but there was a good tweet about the hurricanes recently where someone was like: imagine if states required each person fleeing certain danger from the Carolinas to, say, Maryland or another state ... were stopped, had their children taken from them, were put in prison camps, or worse yet were forced back to the Carolinas to face certain death ?

I hadn't seen that, so thank you. That really highlights the arbitrary distinctions that national borders tend to create in our interactions. The alienation that creates from other humans is pretty explicit, but I think another real risk is that it alienates us from the purpose of political involvement by artificially limiting our view of what politics can accomplish. Talking about borders as hard, natural constructions necessarily mutes our hope for politics and what it can accomplish.

Another example of this is the contraction of acceptable views on war. I don't think there's a single, mainstream (like in a BIG paper or on a BIG cable news show) voice that takes the historical non-radical position of "war is bad". One doesn't have to be a pacifist to realize how the complete disappearance of anti-war voices from the political discourse limits us because it treats our foreign military enterprises as entirely out of our control. Bombs in Yemen are like gravity. Just a thing that happens that we have no control over.

Couldn't agree more. Obama saw the big picture, that was one of his strong points. He may not have been perfect on foreign policy (far from it, in fact) but his worldview, IMO, was more modernized than any before him in that he saw the benefits of a global economy and understood that the world was moving in that direction with or without us. Which makes it all the more sad that his successor is perhaps the most extreme nationalist we've ever seen in office.

Yeah, Obama's periodic willingness to think outside a very settled view of America's role in the world - and the definition of "the world" had the potential to be something genuinely transformative. Instead, we got stuck with with a MUCH more aggressive disinterest in norms in the body of a horrifying reactionary.

There's a bit of hope in that story if you sort through the pile, I guess?

What should happen with the caravan folks right now, given the system as it is (because that isn't changing in the next couple of months).

Should they be able to jump the immigration processing line just because they were able to show up in person?

>>given
>the system as it is (because that isn't changing in the next

You're being unimaginative and calling it realism. Accept your role in this - utter powerlessness - and treat it as a freedom. You're not a fucking pundit, which may be the nicest thing I could say about a stranger on the internet because that's a stupid job. Your political opinion, and mine, and every other asshole her, is individually meaningless but collectively mighty, even if that power is just potential.

No, the system almost certainly isn't going to change in the next few months. But you wringing your hands over process like it's a natural construct, like gravity, is the closest we'll get to a guarantee it will survive for the few months after that. And the few months after that. And the few months after that.

I think we all have heard the slightly irritating truism "power concedes nothing without demand". If our words here are useless (and they are) then stop confining them a reality which is entirely created by human intention. Don't let the discourse take away your moral agency.

>Should they be able to jump the immigration processing line
>just because they were able to show up in person?

Yes. Every question you can ask here, the answer is yes. And then another exhortation to stop being boring and accept the meager role we've been assigned in all of this: people who ask for stuff. Then ask for good stuff.

I'm saying. No we shouldn't just simply accept the 5000 people that show up from the caravan. It is not morally right considering that there are people in their exact situation back home who would not get the same treatment given the current rules.

All I'm saying is that you should not get priority simply because you show up at the border. It would not be morally right to accept them and make others wait indefinitely.

Then don't make anybody wait. Problem solved.

with complete media circus wall to wall 24-7 Fox/CNN/MSNBC coverage?

I got two questions:

1- Who's financing this? 5-7k people don't just move out of thin air.
Some reports say the Venezuelan socialist drug cartel government is providing $$. Wouldn't surprise me at all.

2- What's the Mexican cartels role in this?
They aren't about freedom of movement. A caravan moving through cartel territory is a threat to their trade.
They won't let them pass through unless...(see above)

free food and money.

plot twist: he didnt provide that free food and money.

so you have people in 90-100 degree heat walking miles per day depending on food and water from locals and volunteers. with next to no medical care.

unsurprisingly...
the caravan is barely inside the southern border of mexico and is already down to half its size.

and further empower/embolden these right wing nut jobs in congress and state governments.

and the story will be dead after november 6th when the caravan dwindles down to a nonthreatening dozens of people. while the media just moves on like they played no part in it. prolly blame the dems for not being able to coordinate a message against the 24/7 onslaught of coverage.

White nationalists have being talking about immigration as a war, and using war terminology for decades.

It has trickled in to mainstream republican speech. Tucker Carlson has been using their watered down talking points consistently ever since he got the prime time slot on Fox.
He's the first prominent person I've noticed doing it.

The 5,800 troops who were rushed to the Southwest border amid President Donald Trump’s pre-election warnings about a refugee caravan will start coming home as early as this week — just as some of those migrants are beginning to arrive.

Democrats and Republicans have criticized the deployment as a ploy by the president to use active-duty military forces as a prop to try to stem Republican losses in this month’s midterm elections. Their withdrawal after just a few weeks could further fuel claims that the military was misused when there was no emergency.

But the general overseeing the deployment told POLITICO on Monday that the first troops will start heading home in the coming days as some are already unneeded, having completed the missions they were sent for. The returning service members include engineering and logistics units whose jobs included placing concertina wire and other barriers to limit access to ports of entry at the U.S.-Mexican border.

All the troops should be home by Christmas, as originally expected, Army Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Buchanan said in an interview Monday.

"Our end date right now is 15 December, and I've got no indications from anybody that we'll go beyond that," said Buchanan, who leads the land forces of U.S. Northern Command.

The decision to begin pulling back comes just weeks after Trump ordered the highly unusual deployment.

In previous cases where the military deployed to beef up the border, the forces consisted of part-time National Guard troops under the command of state governors who backed up U.S. Customs and Border Protection and other law enforcement agencies.

But the newly deployed troops, most of them unarmed and from support units, come from the active-duty military, a concession the Pentagon made after Trump insisted that the deployment include "not just the National Guard."

Buchanan confirmed previous reports that the military had rejected a request from the Department of Homeland Security for an armed force to back up Border Patrol agents in the event of a violent confrontation.

"That is a law enforcement task, and the secretary of defense does not have the authority to approve that inside the homeland," Buchanan said.

The closure of one entry point earlier Monday along the California border near Tijuana, Mexico, was only partial and did not require more drastic measures, Buchanan said.

"About half of the lanes were closed this morning but that’s it," he reported. "No complete closures."

Other ports might be closed fully in the future, he said, but he was not anticipating any need to take more drastic measures.

"If CBP have reliable information that one of their ports is about to get rushed with a mob, or something like that that could put their agents at risk, they could ask us to completely close the port," Buchanan said. "You understand the importance of commerce at these ports. Nobody in CBP wants to close a port unless they’re actually driven to do so."

The troop deployment should start trailing off as engineer and other logistics troops wind down their mission of building base camps and fortifying ports of entry for the Border Patrol.

Army and Marine engineers have now emplaced about 75 percent of the obstacles they planned to, including concertina wire, shipping containers, and concrete barriers at ports of entry. “Once we get the rest of the obstacles built, we don’t need to keep all those engineers here. As soon as I’m done with a capability, what I intend to do is redeploy it,” Buchanan said. “I don’t want to keep these guys on just to keep them on.”

Logistics troops, too, will be among the first to head home. “I will probably ask to start redeploying some of our logistic capability,” Buchanan predicted. “Now that things are set down here, we don’t need as many troops to actually build base camps and things like that, because the base camps are built.

Among the troops who will remain after construction engineers and logisticians start departing are helicopter pilots, planners, medical personnel, and smaller “quick response” teams of engineers who can help Border Patrol personnel shut down traffic at their ports of entry.

In contrast to the speed of the deployment in early November and the fanfare surrounding it, the withdrawal promises to be slower and quieter – but Buchanan expects it to be done before Christmas.

“That doesn’t mean it’s impossible,” he added. “But right now this is a temporary mission and we’re tasked to do it until the 15th of December."

so when Americans protest against Mexicans here it's all good right?

TIJUANA, Mexico— A dowsing with hot coffee, a sucker punch, angry threats, peltings with sticks and stones.

Migrants who have journeyed from Central America to this border city seeking refuge from violence back home have encountered unexpected violence and harassment here. More than 3,000 migrants have arrived in Tijuana since Wednesday—a rate of arrival that city officials say is without precedent in the history of the city known as the “City of Migrants.” The migrants formed part of the Central American caravan seeking political asylum in the U.S.

The caravan’s highly publicized arrival has generated a nationalist backlash from a segment of residents here that views the migrants as a threat to public safety, and as unwanted competition for jobs and public services.

I don't like to get into the legal/illegal immigrant thing because I have an unpopular opinion (they're here to work and should be allowed to)
while I came here as a kid (legally), every illegal I've ever known has been a hard working individual who came here to bust their ass and support their family back home.

It's a part of American Latino culture. We all know someone or have relatives who are here illegally. We know what time it is.

We all know someone who married for papers. I was offered stacks years ago, but I passed.

Migration is an intrinsic part of the human experience. When shit is fucked up and your survival is threatened, we do what we gotta do.

Ask the Jews, the Italians, the Irish, the Polish, the fucking pilgrims (happy thanksgiving!)

Mexicans have been coming here legally and illegally for generations
Now they want to make Tijuana great again? FOH

They're likely the Mexicans who're doing OK, with all the selfishness that comes with that.

They closed all because of 'the caravan!"

Fucked up people who commute from TJ to San Diego to work. (Mexicans with the right to work, and US citizens who live in Mexico.)
