The Truth beat was classic but how many mainstream units did Beanie sell? So if Jay-z doesn’t hit commercial gold with Annie, does he do another sampled style?

I do think Kanye is still huge without Hard Knock Life. Jay had been fucking with soul samples, a la Ski, for most of his career. Lots of soul samples on Vol. 2 regardless.

Hard Knock was 4 years before Blueprint...Jay recorded a ton of non-soul sample music between the two. I honestly think the turn around started during the Dynasty with 1900 Hustler, Can't Be Life and a couple other tracks...then they heard Ghost's album and it was over.
If anything Hard Knock had him chasing that sorta hit for a while. He even sampled the Oliver song.

Jay's got a through-line of songs from Just, Ye, Neptunes/Pharrell and Timb across multiple albums, all of which harken back to the signature of each respective producer.
Annie didn't spawn any such line through Jay's catalog. It didn't spawn any "children" or serve as a catalyst in any regard beyond being a smash hit that helped push his career into a higher level.
And as has been mentioned, "Can I Get A...." was arguably as big as HKL, and just as critical to the success of that album and his career.

soul samples have always been a staple in his career Blueprint was a return to form from his earlier careers...thats why it hit so hard Vo1 1-Vol 3 had dabbles of soul with more of the times in sounds (Puff,Swizz,Tim) Blueprint was full frontal samples like RD was

In my lifetime 1.4 mil as of today Vol 2 sold 5.4 mil of the strength of Annie ... which is a very distinctive sample style Which was don’t use a real chorus, use a sample for the chorus
My point isn’t about Jay-Z’s talent, it’s about him identifying accurately a good hook for album sales and finding someone that could continue doing that.

Hard Knock Life was a phenomena on its own thats why Anything didnt work Blueprint sold two mill and only gold singles im confused on how you are connecting the annie sample to anything else in jays catalogue Ye brought a sound...but its not like he did Vol 2 numbers with it

...Jay is a popular rapper, but never really takes off into the stratosphere. Volume II does slightly better numbers than Vol I, but only matches the sales of Nas’ second record. Imbued with confidence, Nas puts out the original version of I Am, despite the advance leak. The album explodes with commercial and critical acclaim and Nas retools Nastradsmus. Jay concedes that Nas has a four hot album every five year average and deads a simmering beef before most of the public even hears of it.

Wire, Blueprint is tilted more towards just blaze than kanye
Just blaze signs wit rocafella, puts out a collab album, dates Amber rose but she doesn't deny him in public, becomes dj khaled without the catch phrases

I remember Jay Z's attempts to break through solo. They never hit until Annie. J Dupri, Foxy Brown, whatever, until this he was restricted. Anything proves his team was well aware of the vein they struck and tried to mine it again.

What if Jay never asked Nas to be on Dead Presidents? What if Nas accepted and rhymed on the track? What if Nas never got Carmen pregnant? What if Jay never left condoms on the baby seat? What if Jay never sampled the Nas line? What if MC Serch didn't exec produce Illmatic? What if Serchlite Publishing didn't clear the sample? What if Eminem didn't murder Jay on his own shit? What if Nas never made Nastradamus?
