are you studying on your own, or taking a prep course?

i recommend takign some type of course, even if its at a community college. Some community colleges offer a prep course - like 4 saturdays. that helps along with going through the Mulcahy book.

the PMBOK doesnt make much sense without some type of course or supplemental guide like Rita's book.

good luck!

a lot of them do now. you just sign into lynda through a library portal and sign in with your library card. you get access to the entire lynda library including exercise files.

sidenote: lynda got acquired by linkedin so yeah .... it's still a thing and going strong lol

My PM textbooks were the only guides I needed since they supported the PMBOK.

Got lazy and never took the exam because the MS has been all that I've needed until now. Planning to get the PMP outta the way in the next few months.

Im unorganized as hell in my personal life. I went through Six Sigma as well but stopped at green belt. My job funded all of our PMP training and certs. It was mandatory because we were all practically doing PM work for years.

Knutson & Bitz: "How to Plan and Manage Successful Projects" is the only book I went through before taking my cert

at the new gig. this is def some cat herding. I'm not use to folks not showing up to calls and endless follow ups that aren't responded to.

I'm not even sure a pmp will get me more money, but if it'll help keep me employed with my current comp or open more doors outside side, it'll be worth it.

you in IT?
i've been seeing that a lot of employers, at least where I am, are requiring PMP certification from the jump or within six months of hiring.

I recently interviewed for a Project Manager job (non-IT) and i'm sure i would have gotten that shit if I had my PMP (took the test, failed, retaking in spring).. That job was paying about 50K more than what i'm currently making and I'm making pretty good money right now, soo...
go for it! it wont hurt having it

if you have the hours of pm work required to sit for the pmp exam, go for that. some folks dont have the hours/experience, so i can see how a capm might be helpful for them. However, i rarely see jobs that lists capm as a requirement. usually a pmp or pgmp.

she was admin and wanted to sit for the pmp exam. she was audited and had to provide documentation to support the hours she recorded on her application. It was a lengthly process for her and she eventually said fuck it.

I've taken the exam and estimated my hours/projects/etc and was never audited. I could provide documentation, if needed, but that would be too damn tedious, especially going back to former employers and shit.

Got mine in March of last year. I had the luxury of my job giving me aweek off and paying for a course, so the way I went about it might not be as feasible for everyone.

I know people have different learning styles and all, but the self-studying the PMBOK was useless for me. I did a week long training bootcamp. The in-class stuff was good but the thing that helped me the most was the online resources. There was an entire training course available online so I could review certain modules/topics. There were quizzes/assessments for each module. There were even full-on timed practice tests to take.

So I did the bootcamp and scheduled the exam for three weeks later, dedicating all my free-time over those weeks to studying. Passed on the first try.

PS - filling out the application is a project itself. If you are like me and mostly worked on smaller/shorter projects, recalling the details and dates from the past was a pain in the ass. I ended up with something like 25 projects in the app to hit the needed hours. There are worksheets online to help you out with getting the app completed.

that's sound like a good route to take. any other resources to look at?

the pmbok is a horrible read. I'm not getting much out of it either. I've read through chapter 5. not sure if I'll use it for more than a reference going forward.

that app looks like a bear to deal with. I hope I'm good on it since I've been doing consulting work for several yrs. I've been on a lot of projects.

how did passing the test affect your job outlook and salary?

congrats on passing, especially on the first try.

>that's sound like a good route to take. any other resources
>to look at?
I did my training through https://projectmanagementacademy.net/. I swear I don't work for them or get any kick back . They basically had everything I needed to prep for the test.

>how did passing the test affect your job outlook and salary?
I work for a super-huge multinational company so this was a very bureaucratic move. My boss is the Lead for our team in the USA. I've basically been his right hand man since joining the team a few years back. The cert was basically the last bit of justification he needed to get me promoted from 'just a guy' to Associate Manager. My current responsibilities didn't change but I got a decent salary bump (12%). There are some thing brewing in the pipeline, that if it comes to fruition will allow me to basically become a regional lead and have my own (small) team. Without the promotion I technically wouldn't have been inline for something like that.

>congrats on passing, especially on the first try.
Thanks. I am no genius by any means, I have always just been a good test-taker.

And I refuse to take it. I'm An Agile PM and Certified Scrum Mater now. I'd rather be an Agile Coach (on track for this) or Program Manager. An Agile Coach can make between $70 to $140 an hr (depend on Experience) with less stress and more reward.

That's for me.

everybody got their own thing. I hate this cert game, but I'm at a point where I need add some creds behind my name. I'm really trying to open few more doors and hoping this will help.

I do agree that you don't have the 'right' creds all the time. I have a marketing degree. haven't done any type of marketing work since mid 2000s.
