"Who are our current outspoken voices in progressive circles?"
Wed Oct-10-18 08:38 PM by double negative

It just occurred to me that there is a ton of visibility with outspoken critics/activists/thinkers/minds/commentators on the conservative side.

Candace Owens
Jordan Peterson
Ben Shapiro

etc

Who are ya'll checking for on the progressive/liberal/green side of things?

So far I've been taking a lot in from the Crooked Media dudes, Coates, and occasionally Contrapoints but outside of that I'm kinda drawing a blank.

Who are the loudest critics on the left? It seems like the left/progressive side is in a position of being reactive to what ever is coming from the right.

I guess I'm looking out for ever is dropping that hammer in these trying times.

Youtube keeps recommending horrible shit and I need to adjust my intake.

cannot themselves directly associate with.

ben shapiro can justify a segregated society more loudly than an elected official can.

this only works for people who have both the cultural and political capital.

it doesn't work the other way because you don't have the power behind it.

the left has wealthy backers as well.

If we don’t have any, why not? In this “dumb it down” 24 hour news cycle we need these types as well. I think most of our mouth pieces are celebs and CNN contributors.

commentators/critics like 25 to 1. That's why a dummy like Candance Owens get a platform, because there are so few who can string a sentence together that you can put on tv without dropping the n bomb eventually.

I think the big difference is that progressive voices are honest to god journalist, academics and in the street activist. Not talking heads whose primary job is to go on tv and say dumb shit. Infact, I am not a big fan of the progressive talking heads whose primary job is being tv talking heads.

Anyway, I follow a bunch of people on twitter like

Samantha Power, Sarah Kendzior, Michael Avenatti, Franchesca Ramsey, Jot Reid, Jelani Cobb, Jemele Hill, Shaun King, Bell Hooks, Vanita Gupta, Josie Duffy Rice, Kiese Laymon, Gwenn Ifill , Ida Bae Wells, Mark Halperin, Imani Perry, MHP, Jamil Smith, Tananarive Due, Jamelle Bouie (my favorite).... man this is just me scrolling through my twitter feed, there are too many to list.

There are also all sorts of list you can find online as well like this one for example:

and so, I've been hearing/reading that a potential new strategy or refocusing within the left is to start embracing honest to god progressive thought instead of pussyfooting around trying to be centrist

so, I'm like outside of the crooked media folks, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the like whos is putting a message thats over the wall and connecting with folks?

I think the growing, collectivized voices of the left are more interesting than a top-down notion of influential thinkers, but there are a ton of thoughtful, vigorous analysts too.

Nathan Robinson, editor of Current Affairs, is devastatingly clear and systematic writer, who's pretty much woodshedded Shapiro and Peterson's sloppy thought. If you want foreign policy stuff, Fellow Traveler's Blog is an independent source for discussion of left foreign policy. If Russia and Natsec stuff occupies you, then Marcy Wheeler's blog is perfect. Tressie McMillan Cottam and Eve Ewing are go-to's for education policy.

If you want an example of active and not reactive leftist ideas and policy, you should take a look at People's Policy Project. It's a response to the overwhelming center/right orientation of DC think tanks. It's funded by patreon, not by some creepy billionaire, and churns out thoughtful policy analysis on voting rights, medicare for all, public ownership of industry, social housing, etc.

>I think the growing, collectivized voices of the left are
>more interesting than a top-down notion of influential
>thinkers

in general...the left is more decentralized and bottom-up grassroots driven. as opposed to the right being more streamlined/consolidated and top-down authoritarian.

so its much easier to elevate voices among the right when most of their audience is tuned into that heavily-concentrated elevation venue and more willing to receive orders/instruction.

for example...like 50% of republicans have fox news as their primary news source. for democrats...i think cnn was the highest primary news source but barely cracking double digits. and the rest is pretty evenly spread out between msnbc, facebook, local tv, npr, nyt, etc with single digits for each.

even when you look at pure politics...all of the major shifts in the dem party platform have been driven bottom-up by the people (marriage equality, renewable energy, criminal justice, healthcare, etc). the major shifts in the repub party platform have been completely driven by special interest groups via 'leaders' (climate denial, gun rights absolutism, etc).

Yep. I guess it helps that their actual political message is so thin. It's really just "owning the libs" via huge business interests. There's no meaningful intellectual underpinnings on the right, and the ones that once existed are subsumed and transformed by capitalism. Look at how thorough the Koch's have branded Libertarianism, which is incredibly dumb but at least was once relatively independent.

>even when you look at pure politics...all of the major shifts
>in the party platform have been driven bottom-up by the people
>(marriage equality, renewable energy, criminal justice,
>healthcare, etc). the major shifts in the repub party
>platform have been completely driven by special interest
>groups via 'leaders' (climate denial, gun rights absolutism,
>etc).

And that means the left is going to fight internally more often. Which is good insofar as it means vibrancy of ideas and bad with respect to obtaining political power. It's while I'll grump on liberals' insistence on simply reforming capitalism rather than destroying it, and why I'll keep grumping on it. But the most damaging notion, and the one that deserves as much opposition as the actual GOP, is the insistence on civil engagement (looking at guys like Jon Chait) with transparently bad faith conservative thought.

The Republican party is the furthest right mainstream political party in the world. Even the weird racist European parties want to preserve social welfare programs to some degree. So, the GOP needs to be destroyed entirely. If there are any good ideas there (there aren't) they can be picked up by whatever emerges that's willing to suggest those ideas in good faith.

In response to Reply # 0

The people you listed all see themselves as members of the out-group, and many of their critics agree with that, so they're all on the same page about that.

The big progressive names today often feel as they they are in-group with respect to people who are smart, well-educated and worldly. The out-group members feel like they're fighting a battle to keep from being wiped out altogether, and that affects how much energy they put into what they do. It's like some sort of insurgency with alot of them, especially the three you listed.

I watch TYT casually. If Jimmy Dore is involved, EJECT -- OPERATION: DESERTION.

Secular Talk, ditto. after 2016, Kyle's turned into that anti-idpol type lefty that I ain't tryna hear

Democracy Now... eh.

I'm primarily Majority Report/Michael Brooks Show/Ben Dixon now. David Pakman as well.

Also, The Real News, which is based out of Baltimore.

Michael specializes in a lot of asshole humor, but there's a lot of deep research and analysis when he's not being the class clown.

The Real News is pretty straight ahead. occasionally they report on a local Baltimore and Maryland state topics. David Pakman has sort of said as an aside that he doesn't care for them and I can't help but wonder because they also go pretty hard in on Israel's right wing. they don't do a lot of ad hominems over there.

I was thinking yesterday about how much of what is fucked up today can be tied to Fox News.

Trump and the GOP have completely torn up any idea of norms or even the appearance of norms.

The Left needs to turn Murdoch into Soros for the right, basically.

Will it change a lot of minds? No.

But maybe a few.

mainstream media closes ranks and defends fox news as a legitimate journalism outlet.

obama iced out fox news and the so called liberal media basically revolted against him.

de blasio did an interview on cnn a while ago where he started talking about the harm that murdoch outlets are doing to democracy. brian stelter basically accused him of attacking media outlets like trump.

The only thing I'll say is that Trump and Trumpsters have destroyed all norms, so...

I could be off on this, I admit. Maybe if other Left-learning orgs went harder on Fox...and most specifically, put a face to the evil.

I sometimes forget Murdoch's name, but I read about Soros all the time lately. And I'm on the left.

For a short time I listened to Hannity and Rush for a few minutes when Obama had them melting down

Anytime someone called in with a great point they would go to commercial. I think it was so they could get their talking points from their assistants.

But let someone shit on Obama on a call and they would let it ride. It’s scary how many people listen to these types and eat that shit up. What’s even scarier is Trunp shitted on Fox News during the debates and didn’t show up and Fox News has to bow down to him. The ignorance is larger that Fox News.

he's a "reformed conservative", which calls into question some of his motivations. his style is real fratboy, and sometimes he can't resist going into that "cast member of Porky's bag", but not too much to set off the #MeToo alarm.

but Jesus Christ the mere sight of that dude triggers the MAGAboys, it's like he's a Turkish Farrakhan, the way they ALWAYS bring up the Armenian Genocide, call him a "buffalo", and just get mad at his presence.

I'm OK with Cenk, only because his rage against the MSM over the Iraq War was as real as it got (and as it should have been IN the MSM).

I have a lot of problems with Dr. West, but I have to say that the man has consistently put himself out there. He was in DC protesting Citizens United, getting arrested at Occupy Wall st, and was a part of a group of clergy members at Charlottesville protesting Nazis. That's sounds pretty frontline to me.
