"this crystal pepsi is the bomb b!"

what things are you surprised people are still into in 2018??

wrestling has to be my number one. i was all about it in 98 but im surprised when i see it still has such a big following and that people i know are still watching the ppv.

i still remember the whole argument about it being real or not. seemed liked once they admitted it was obviously scripted that folks would lose interest but nope, its exploded since then.

1. "CD's"
In response to Reply # 0

I'm kind of surprised to still see CD sections in stores. The sales have to be ultra low at this point. Especially with any type of music that has a predominantly young fanbase. I definitely get the allure of physical media but I recently got rid of all my records and CD's and it feels pretty good to not have that massive pile of stuff taking up space. If I were going to buy a physical copy of something at this point though it would be record not a CD. If I want portability and convenience I'll just stream, otherwise the artwork/tangible experience is much better with vinyl.

last i saw target and walmart still have them.

i totally agree about records. i like to support artists when i can and its nice to have something physical. it feels like records would be a better item to hold on to. a lot of space though.

i know people IRL that are into it too though. ive been invited and gone to PPV nights. its perfectly entertaining to be honest im just shocked at the staying power.

it seems like a mess with WWE buying up everyone yet trying to pretend it is different companies on different nights.

Truth is, the only real reason the stigma still exists is that it's low hanging fruit for people to get a whif of that air of smug superiority.

Shitting on wrestling fans is right on par with going out of their way to say they don't even own a television. My, aren't we sophisticated.

Truth is, talking about it is no different than talking about boxing, or the NBA, or movies, television, or music, or gaming, or a novel.

Frankly, it's exactly like talking about all of them, all at once, because that's basically what it is.

And just dealing with WWE, there's quite a bit worth discussing.

Creative decisions, managerial directives, dynamic character work, promos, feats of incredible athleticism, basic human psychology and storytelling, how well a particular story is connecting with fans, ratings, subscriber numbers, impact on stock prices, tv rights deals, the social impact of choices ranging from how women are featured, or anti-bullying campaigns and how certain creative decisions work toward or against that goal, etc.

Pro wrestling is also an incredibly successful podcasting subject, with a wealth of interesting stories to be told, like Steve Austin smacking the soul out of Vince McMahon with a bedpan for a particularly notable segment, after Vince more or less told Steve to make sure to lay it in.

Shit, Steve Austin does a segment on his podcast where he'll break down some of his notable matches in great detail, illustrating how, why, and when certain things are done for pure psychology reasons.

Everyone's got some shit to geek out on.

Because that I actually get.

I'm not really shitting on wrestling because I do have an appreciation for it and everything that it was and is, but I will be honest. I had no idea that wrestling would be that big to the people that are the main demographic of this site. The people I know who are into it are about as far from okayplayery as they come.

Like, I don't know if they're branded jnco jeans, but they're the same style, super huge and long, excessive amount of fabric. I think she's some sort of goth (an asian one at that) but I don't know what kind. It fascinates me.

White kid, maybe 15/16, all decked out in black JNCOs with the thick chain wallet, black raver shirt and the stringy neck-length hair. I had so many questions I wanted to ask him, mostly to see if he had better musical tastes than the goths in my high school did in the age of Korn.

You know, the ones that wear gas masks and have brightly colored neon dreads and wear long lace gloves (see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqcWnG2y3Kw)

I don't know if I've seen an old school guyliner goth recently, that seems to be a 90s relic.

I was convinced I was supposed to be in retail.

I was making decent money at Old Navy (this is mid 90's, btw), but there was a change in management. The whole mood of the store started to change and I wanted out. They were hiring for management, so I applied and got the job.

Pure hell.

I was "manager in training", but the only manager of the store that had a car, so I got picked to go to this managers retreat over the actual store manager. Oh yeah, can you give these other two complete strangers a ride? Mind you, I'd only been there about a week when this happened.

The very next week, the actual manager of the store called and quit over the phone, and told me if I was smart, I'd quit too.

This was the day before Thanksgiving. I ended up working open to close, seven days a week casue the GM sucked at finding me help. The day my daughter was being born, I called her that morning and told her I was at the hospital. She said "well, I expect you to be at the store in an hour to open it...find your own replacement for the day".

Easter weekend I'd had enough. Me and two other employess walked out of the store and left her there to fend for herself. She ended up locking the doors for the rest of the day.

Then I went to work at Journeys....LMAO

he works in a diff. department, but I see him daily. Seems pretty chill, we speak...say what's up in passing. Dude's everyday uniform consists of very baggy graphic jeans (think...Fat Albert joints), plain white low top sneakers (think...Nike Air Monarchs) and an oversized, solid color tee. Bruh is mad consistent with it, too. These have to be jeans he's kept in good condition, because I refuse to believe you can still actively by these jawns.

Because it does seem to go in mainstream popularity cycles (big in the 80's, down in the 90's, back up in the late 90's, down again in the aughts) and I guess we were due for another one. And I do get the appeal of it both as entertainment and digging into the behind the scenes shit/smart mark elements of it. I didn't think it was real, and knowing how exactly it worked only made me more interested back then.

But it's SUCH a shitty industry for 99.99% of it's employees (sorry, contractors, which is why they don't need to give them health benefits.) And even when it's done well, most of it is just garbage. As much goofy, problematic shit that I like, wrestling is one bridge I can't cross as an adult.

Shit was hilarious because the deacon from their church was an usher at the event.

Then she says it was in a small ass basement or VFW type building

Then she says she got front row seats

Then she says dude got tossed out the ring and she heard dudes head hit the ground and felt it in her soul

Then she saw the blood

Then she realized she took him to a real ass underground wrestling event.

He was like.. “I told you it was real”

it will go through lulls where it's a small time niche entertainment and every 10-15 years or so it will experience a resurgence in mainstream popularity, but Wrestling's been on TV pretty consistently since the 50s

sometimes you do need to have a conversation or follow up via phone but so many things should just be an email.

the quality really has improved, i just dont have the patience for it anymore. im not looking to spend so much money on a system and games. even when i get a retro kick or get a new game i play a couple hours then dont touch it for over a month.

my attention has shifted but i kind of do want to play more.

the last system i ever personally owned was the OG nintendo. we did have a ps2 in my apartment when i was in college and i'd play the fuck outta FIFA.

but man video games have come a long way since then and if it's something you're into i get still being into it because of the improvements you mentioned, but cot damn it's an expensive hobby so even if it was something i was into i'm not sure i could afford to keep up. it's gotten far too complicated for me also, but it is pretty awesome to watch. we just got my son a Switch for his bday and he's loving it. and i'm enjoying kicking his ass in Mario Kart. i can't do the Mario Oddyssey and shit though, it's too hard Haha.

He'll buy a game on day one, and stay up all night to beat it...then never play it again.

Thats a waste of 60-70 bucks if I ever saw one.

there are very few games i have finished all the way through.

i think a big part of what i liked about playing games before was the in person multiplayer. it seems that gone more online now.

i want a switch really bad but i know i wouldnt spend more than 3 hours a month on it. what might get me playing more is the dj hero and rock band games lol

seems very expensive to get set up on one though.

both grandmother's pitched in and go the Switch together. sis in law bought him some accessories and we bought him a game. another friend bought him minecraft and he got game stop gift cards and shit like that from other people so he can buy his own games. i'm not gonna be running out and spending money on new games just because they get released. holidays and birthdays i have no problem with a game or two, but if he wants them at other times he's gonna have to figure out a way to get em (legally of course haha). because for real, all i'ma probably play is Mario Kart, and that's the only one i've bought.

are they still out there?? has break dancing just been swallowed by dance in general and it is now part of a well rounded dancer?

i remember the late 90s return of break dancers.

turntables seem to be headed this way too.

Same with turntablism. Pretty obscure at this point but a small passionate amount of people are still doing it.

I'd guess that the breakdancers tend to be younger (younger than my old ass, at least), maybe 20s-30s. It's a pretty good mix of folks out there showing their stuff...black, white, latino, guys, girls, etc.

And why I'm still a fan.

https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5kc9k6
Unfortunately this is the match that ended Shibata's career with a headbutt. You can skip to 37:30 to see it. Dude still finished the match, at the end you can see him start to black out while walking backstage. He later went into a coma for a bit and had to step down.

The point is this match had all the athletic drama you'd want out of anything resembling combat sports even though it's predetermined. The entire match is amazing from start to finish and gets super intense until the point most people are on the edge of their seat not knowing what's going to happen next. It's like a final confrontation at the end of an action movie.

There is an art to a lot of it if you venture away from things like the WWE and start looking at promotions that take it a bit more serious like New Japan where it's less drama and is treated more like an actual sport.

If you want to see even more craziness like this then watch the Kenny Omega vs. Okada saga that went on for 4 matches. That is pro wrestling at its highest caliber and probably some of the greatest matches of all time.
