"Whimsy on a Wednesday: Sandwiches"

Yo.

Seriously. Wanna know all you need to know about someone, go get sandwiches with them.

No sandwich is cut equally in half. There's usually a big half, and a smaller half.

People who eat the bigger half first are psychopaths. It's science.

People who don't fuck with sandwiches? Trash.

People who only eat sandwiches that can be eaten whole. God Level.

Shout out to all other sandwich cousins. The best food delivery vehicles mankind has to offer:

Tacos - the Mexican sandwich.
Calzones - the italian sandwich alternative
Gyros - the greek mexican sandwich
Burritos - fat mexican sandwiches
Pita- the fat greek fat mexican sandwich
Hot dog - all american tubular sandwich
Panini - squeezed ass flat sandwich
Quesadillas - mexican panini ass sandwich.

Sandwiches, though.

I'm down for this post. Except the part about eating the bigger half first. I do tend to do that.

There's a cafeteria in the bottom of our building. Their lunch offerings are bland as hell. I've eaten lunch there twice. I'll only go back if my life depends on it. The breakfast is OK but expensive.

But there's a building across the street that has a deli on the 1st floor. This is my spot. It's a greasy spoon, Mom & Pop joint but they do it right.

I usually bring my lunch on Mon-Thurs. But Friday is sandwich day. My co-workers say sandwich day for me is like pretzel day was for Stanley on "The Office." And their breakfast choices are better & less expensive than the hole in the bottom of my building.

I switch around all the time but my favorite may be the RB-BLT. A roast beef sandwich with bacon, cheese lettuce & tomato and horseradish mayo. Their Cuban is nice too. And the turkey sandwich with bacon, cheese & 1000 island is nice too.

Second grimiest city in America, after Detroit

Everybody has a bad attitude

White people just as gutter as the Black people

The heroin/dope fiend game in Kensington? Off the fucking chain

Police as corrupt as they come (just google Officer Tom Tolstoy)

Septa: One of the jankiest transit systems ever built. A whopping TWO subway lines

But Goddamn if they don't have the BEST FUCKING SANDWICHES ANYWHERE!

Philly food > the rest of America's local cuisine. Yes, that includes NYC.

God bless you, Philly, you surly motherfuckers.

>Tacos - Los Angeles
>Calzones - NYC
>Gyros - definitely Chicago
>Burritos - Bay Area all day
>Pita- again Chicago
>Hot dog - Detroit
>Panini - anywhere
>Quesadillas - Bay Area all day (El Farolita Got-DAMN!)

Asked for a hoagie once...they had no idea what I was talking about

IRT sandwiches, guess I'm more of a long roll guy

The messier the better

I need sauce or oil/grease dripping off my hand...but it can't saturate the bread to mush

We put our hoagies in the fridge for at least an hour...gotta let it marinate

+1, a lot of people outside Philly trip when I tell them I prefer wiz

>>Hot dog - Detroit

I was going to object to this, but if by “hot dog” you mean Coney hot dog, then yes.

If not, I’d say:

>> shawarma sammich - Detroit

I’ve been vegetarian for nearly two decades but I gotta rep my city.

I think we have the second largest population of Middle Eastern people outside of the
Middle East here. Lebanese people, Chaldeans from Iraq, et al. Shawarma pita sandwiches reign supreme here.

I've had a shitty several weeks so splurged at a well regarded suburban hoagie joint for a late lunch... normally I just get an Italian, but they had a new special: parma prosciutto, dry cured capicola, sweet sopressata, hot sopressata, fresh mozz, tomato, arugula and a blasamic glaze with chopped olives. I don't even like olives and it was fabulous. Roll wasn't a classic hoagie roll though, more like a ciabatta, and sliced all the way through sideways.

Then my daughter wanted cheesesteaks for dinner. I didn't even want one since I was full from the hoagie - but of course my older boy could only eat half of his so you can guess what happened to the other half. Just a vino ordinaire pizza shop, not one of my preferred steak destinations, and the cheesesteak was still pretty damn good.

..during high school, I had a neighbor named Mr. P.

Mr. P was a retired Naval Officer and kept to himself. He spent most of his days maintaining his yard and keeping a watchful eye over the block. During the summer, he entertained himself by clowning our backyard hoop skills (real or imagined lol) while sipping a tall glass of freshly squeezed lemonade. His wife was still working, yet she still came home everyday to make his lunch (LOL). Her daily arrival included playfully scolding him for not doing whatever chores he hadn't finished.

Mrs P: You've been sitting on that porch all day, making fun of those chil'ren, like you don't have work to do around here.

Mr. P: Shut up, woman!.. and fix me some lunch!

They were basically that cute ol' couple that was STILL TOGETHER © Ceephus & Reesie. I often admired the playful banter btwn them and once inquired about the secret to their success.

Cy: You have such a great relationship with your wife. How did you know she was the one?

Mr. P: I ain't know shit! Thought I did, but like everyone else, I was wrong. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a liar! There's no crystal ball for marriage. Its all a game of chance.

C: Ok, so what made you marry her?

Mr P: Her sammiches. Wooo-lawd, she makes the best sammiches!!! ANY kind of sammich you can think of, she can make the BEST.

I laughed, but he continued to expound on his theory about love & romance.

That’s a stretch. I’d say Kati rolls. It’s a street food sammich. There’s a few Kati roll carts in NYC.

And grilled cheese sandwiches!

Oh yes, I love sandwiches. I usually make a regular sandwich for lunch every day, but a real GOOD sandwich. Mmmmm.

This place near me has a meatloaf sandwich made with ground beef, pork and I think something else on a buttery croissant with house made ketchup and fried onion crisps on it. Lawd have mercy.

I like all good sandwiches.

A few years back I saw an old episode of No Reservations, from Viet Nam, where Bourdain sang the praises of the bahn mi (R.I.P.).

If you ain't up on the bahn mi, a vietnamese sandwich with french bread, choice of meats (I prefer grilled pork), cilantro, fresh veggies and spicy mayo...get on it.

but toasted cinnamon raisin bread with some almond butter slathered in between is like manna on earth to this agnostic's taste buds.

I'm upset a brand of almond butter I like to buy stopped making cinnamon raisin almond butter; toasted cinnamon raisin bread with cinnamon raisin almond butter is beyond sublime. I have one unopened jar in my fridge right now that I'm afraid to open up since I don't know where to get more. Straight up Elaine with her sponges status.

I think I might have to try some varieties of cheese this weekend now that I saw someone in this thread mention toasted cheese sandwiches.

only problem: i dont eat bread, jelly/jam or peanut butter enough to make it work. all three would spoil before i make a second sandwich.

3 slices of bread...put peanut butter on 2 slices.

Then put jelly on the 3rd slice of bread and put it on one of the PB slices.

Put another layer of jelly on top of that and put the 2nd PB slice on top.

Welch's grape in the squeeze bottle makes this mad easy because you don't have to worry about cross-contaminating the jelly with an PB residue on your knife.

but it’s the perfect spread for a roast beef or ham sammich.

One time we went on a road trip and my sister drove.

She had the cooler with the ham and cheese and mayo sammich.. that gets a little soggy

Man listen, I was humming like a kid, shit took me back.

Forgot all about this because the wife and I always stop to eat but shieeet, finding a nice little scenic spot on the highway with a table and eating with the fam? Now that’s some good ass memories.
