im thinking that is an album that one day will hit me but i still dont quite get why its loved so much. as i said, its great but to me its a step down from the first 3.

i could see one album moving up or down on the list for each of them though.

Tribe is my favorite group, period. De la is up there but while I liked their production I always got more out of Tribe's stuff. Pos and Dave are probably better MC's than Tip and Phife but like Tribe's beats, I gravitated more to Tip and the crew.

It probably hurts Tribe that they put out fewer albums and over a shorter period of time. It's easier to have fond memories of De la Soul because they've been relevant over a longer period of time.

De la might be more consistent but Tribe's peaks were higher to me.

But I can't argue with you if you did put them above Tribe. Same basic template, but one was more abstract and the other more funky.

i agree that de la has the better MCs, i think what holds de la back for a lot of people is that they always tried different things. tribe found a sound and perfected it from the get go. people loved it and they kept delivering until beats rhymes and life. de la had everyone fall in love with them and they said nah thats not us and switched it up. you do have to give some points to tribe since the production was mostly in house. not sure that prince paul was ever a member of de la and their classics were mostly produced by him.

this could easily back fire. if you only put out one or two classics albums and dont return youre a legend. if you keep putting albums out you might turn into KRS. de la found a way to keep putting out great music. that is definitely a challenge. to me its more about the quality of music vs the quantity.

>De la might be more consistent but Tribe's peaks were higher

to me tribes were more catchy and will get more heads nodding when thrown on. de la is more laid back and more made for jamming out by yourself. the songs they do have that were big singles were great but id give tribe the edge on music to jam to.

>But I can't argue with you if you did put them above Tribe.
>Same basic template, but one was more abstract and the other

basically. this was really a reaction to tribe getting like 75% of vote on ambrosia over de la. really should be more 51/49 either way.

I think their variety in their musical and lyrical styles is why ?uest liked them so much. Both groups have the similar thread of creating something uniquely sounding from one album to the next.

de La was a group that I would really like for one album and then lose that infatuation on the next one. Like with Buhloone Mindstate. That's probably my favorite de La album and while I liked Stakes is High, some of my fondness of the group faded.

The group could have had more commercial success if they stayed in the 3 Feet and Rising days. But to their credit they bet on their ability to be creative and shift their influences from album to album.

Granted they've had a great career so they're probably not worried about how things shook out.

Good point. I personally prefer groups that don't put out a lot of output but knock it out of the park with each release tho.

Yeah, I guess they're readership must skew younger. Maybe since de La is almost nonexistent in digital they've fallen out of relevance since the only people that listen to them regularly are people who are heads or who grew up on their music. That has less to do with the quality of the music than the current way younger people seem get access to music.

I didn't know a lot of de La heads growing up but my guess would be that fans of both groups would rate one over the other, but by a slight margin. I don't know if both bands are 1a & 1b, but they're a really close 1 & 2, if that makes sense.

and I’m a huge De La fan. Yuuuuuge.

but their style of talk was a crutch at times. You didn’t know what they were talking about which made it easy to say anything on a track.

The other issue with De La is they were a dark group. Pessimist to a fault while Tribe was more optimistic. For me that made for higher highs

De La is headphone listen by yourself music.

Tribe is bring people together, iconic sounding music.

I’d put them on the same level too. More projects I don’t care for(just the last 2), but more material too. I ride for Tipping Point and How I Got Over way harder than most, in addition to their generally recognized best albums. TFA is in the upper echelon of albums ever made to me.

And I’m starting to believe Thought’s got a legit argument for GOAT. He’s been a phenomenally great rapper for over 20 years with never any kind of fall off.

I assumed that was established long ago. Even if he's not a top 5 FAVORITE of yours ("yours" = in general) I don't think any longtime fan of hip-hop could reasonably argue against him being one of the very best ever to rip a mic.

but that’s cause I didn’t really think of listing rappers from groups that didn’t have solo albums. I never thought of Andre, Pos, etc. either. Starting to rethink that though. And especially with Thought because while those were group albums, he was doing most of the rapping on a lot of them so what’s the difference if the band he’s in is making the music or outside producers are making it?

... he's 6th after: Nas, Common, Posdnuos, Andre 3k, and Royce 5'9. But if I'm talking "objective" GOATs he's gotta be a top 5 candidate, at worst.

Not saying that albums post FOABP were hot gahbage..."Apocalypse 91" had "Can't Truss It" and something else on it...but the output after that? No way can you put them in GOAT group status.

Their best post FOABP don't equal up to the worst Tribe, De La or Kast albums

I love both, but prefer Tribe.

And I’m thinking We Got it From Here is a classic.....I just played that today on a long road trip and multiple times was shaking my head in joy and disbelief that we even got this album this late in the game from them.

That album continues to surprise me. It was incredible on first listen, continued to be great on subsequent listens at the time ... and has staying power.

I dunno if I'm ready to call it classic but what an incredible swan song. Legit could not have asked for anything more. They managed to make an album that sounded fresh as hell while still throwing back to their essence, both in terms of lyrical content and flow, and the production.

I haven't listened in a couple months front to back. Guess I'll have to do that tomorrow.

... definitively say one way or the other which group was/is better IMO. I think Tribe was more consistent, but De La took more risks and had higher highs. But I'm not even super confident saying that, honestly. Haha. Because you could flip those statements and it would still make sense for both groups.

That one is ridiculously hard IMO. I was going through each of their first albums and comparing them and ranking them in order, 2nd albums, 3rd, etc.

I couldn’t even decide for their 2nd albums. Too close.

30 + years in and De la are still recording music, still touring and still together. Plus, they're matured very nicely into their music. Like a fine wine.

De La made you feel smarter, but Tribe felt like someone you knew, living a life like yours, with struggles like yours. I admire De La, but I love Tribe. They are #1 and 2 for me, but Tribe gets the edge because they are more relatable.

Still don't really enjoy Anonymous Nobody. It's all over the place. Stakes is High is a classic for sure even if you could take 3-4 joints off and probably make it more potent.
We Got It really hit me hard and like all of you I couldn't believe how great it still is.

#1 Tribe joint -MM
#1 De La joint- Buhloone

Tribe was 100% the more "I could hang with these guys" group, while De La was riskier and weirder and, as you said, they spit lyrics that made you think and feel smarter. Both groups were fun though, in their own way. Tribe in a more traditional and (again, as you say) relatable way, and De La in their strange yet endearing way. In De La's case that especially pertains to their first 3 albums, of course.

they have at least 3 classic albums in multiple decades and they never broke up

plus the lead man and the #2 is always superior at rapping in De La (Posdnuos > Q-Tip > Trugoy > Phife and Im a huge Phife fan)

but and still Tribe made my favorite music ever

Based on sheer volume.

They put out more product than just about anybody...and they've been doing it for like a hundred years... that's all well and good. But if we're being honest, a lot of these albums are meh.

This is one of those "only in okayplayer" topics...kinda like suggesting that Vince Carter is better than Jordan because he's still playing 20 years later.

that's 3 albums out of 9

everything else ranges from pretty good to fire

Nas if illmatic didn't exist...he would have a solid catalog but not that classic album. De la has several really good albums and some filler, but they are missing that classic album.

And this is from a fan...I went to their shows back in the stakes days AND just a couple years ago I saw their recent show. I've never been to a tribe show. But just because I like them, I'm not gonna delude myself in thinking they're the best ever.

Some of these same folk who think Buhloone is their best album don’t tend to fuck with 3ft High.

I love De La to death but I think folks are propping them up for their consistency and volume.

I’m sorry but I don’t see any album fucking with LET and MM.

I’m a Stan tho, the production, vibe and Tips voice/flow is simply flawless on their first 3 albums... and Phife got better and better. Bugging Out... gotdamn.

Eventually I came around though.

With you on the features too. "Held Down" is one of the best songs IMO. Wish Dave had a turn on that one. Had he been on it it'd rise to the top of the list of their best songs IMO.

On one hand, I’ll say that yea, I wasn’t there when it dropped and I’ll never be able to understand how it felt then.

On the other hand, it’s SO MANY Rap albums I love from before and immediately after this album dropped, including Tribe’s albums. And my ear is generallly great for older music. This album just doesn’t move me a single bit. The Buddy remix is way better than basically everything on here, yet it’s not even on the album.

I was there as much as a 9 or 10 year old whose mom bought the bootleg $5 cassette for them from Harlem's infamous 125th Street could be there

the songs you listed are cool (De La hates Me Myself and I) and I know how Prince Paul changed the world with skits

that makes it an *important* album, not necessarily a *great* one

like I said (for me) it didnt age well

I already said De La is the GOAT elsewhere in this post. De La Soul Is Dead (I can argue Buhloone Mindstate too but I can see how it's too left for people), Stakes Is High and The Grind Date are timeless, most of the other albums hold up well too

so an album with multiple UNDENIABLY CLASSIC HIP HOP SONGS (plug tunin, potholes, buddy, me myself) "the songs you listed were cool" - all CLASSIC

artist dont like their work all the time... any party u throw me myself on is gonna rock

7 different songs charted

groundbreaking as far as sampling is concerned (especially is terms of the scope of the source material)

when does that not equal a great album

Maybe it’s nostalgia but since I was in HS I had totally different memories/emotions of this music and the impact it has on the people around me.

You aren’t going to appreciate the groundbreaking impact that album had at 9 years old.

It’s the main reason older heads view it as a classic.

It’s ok, this is just one of those times being old works in our favor when it comes to hip hop.

My relevant personal anecdote is that I heard The Chronic at 9 years old (the album that changed the trajectory of my music tastes) and was EASILY able to glean how important that album was to hip-hop and to music in general even at that young age.

De La was headier, more experimental, darker, denser.

ATCQ was accessible, user friendly, down to earth, smoother.

Not too much unlike how George had Funkadelic and Parliament set up.

Both groups are GOAT, if not for anything but for production levels.

I just listened to Midnight Marauders for the zillionth time last week, randomly.
While deep in my heart I think I am a bigger De La fan, there is no doubt that tribe checks off all of the essentials of a classic Hip-Hop sound. I would likely tell the new listener to listen to LET.

i went ahead and listened to both we got it and stakes is high over the weekend. i have to say both are better than i remember.

we got it has nothing but great songs. im not sure if any are classics but its kind of too soon to determine that. for now it stays as a great album to me but i can see it one day becoming a classic.

i liked stakes is high much more now. i think the main problem i have had with it is that its kind of dark. not the vibe i go to de la for. so when i first heard it i picked out my favorite songs and hardly revisited the album. i have to say the albums is mostly great songs, a few classics and a couple of good songs. although the vibe is a bit dark there is still a lot of fun in how they constructed the songs.

Brakes, Pony Ride and Sunshine are some of my favorite songs ever by anyone. to me there are about 3 more songs on that same level on the album. the rest is mostly great. i have to leave the album as great for now but with more listens i might start really liking some of the songs i have neglected.

what are the classic songs on both of these albums to you guys?

the Buddy Remix was the earthy fun version of Self-Destruction/H.E.A.L. as in put a bunch of rappers on a catchy song and it goes over like gangbusters

Taana Gardner already had a hit with Heartbeat less than a decade ago, so the beat was a cheat code.

I havent discussed the song at length with anyone but I've never even heard the idea that there was a standout verse, because it wasnt about bars or performance, it was like a family cookout where people were hanging out

I think I know the audience but I'd rather they classify themselves. But I wish there was some Machine Learning data on the cross section of people who actually consider either a top group or any of these albums classic.

The only person I would ever check for is Q-tip. The vast majority of what is being considered in this post seems like background music at best to me.

If someone would waste time to identify the significants or draw to the content I would greatly appreciate the effort.

both of these statements sound like you're proud to not know what you're talking about. that's fine, but these two groups raised a whole generation of intelligent/sensitive kids who were cool without having to pick a box like conscious (Brand Nubian/Poor Righteous Teachers), militant (Public Enemy) or thuggish (NWA)

target audience. I also stated that I like Q-tip, which was completely glossed over. Shit funny TBH.

I didnt put anything down either, I simply stated how I classify the music and I was curious of the group that classifies it differently because I'm not aware of anyone close to me who put either group in the top 5.

The sensitivity is hilarious though. I know what I require from an artist and outside of Q-tip non of these guys meet that requirement.

But really, I'm perplexed by their (minus Q-tip) popularity and their target audience. I dont want to paint with a broad brush but I assume their audience just grew up in a different environment than I did.

In general, this is art/entertainment and both groups, imo, are light in both categories. If one cannot pull from their life then one must be able to craft a captivating/entertaining product.

In short, why would I waste time on a low wire act when I can instead use that time on a high wire act?

Light on art ? C'mon dogg. You don't like them, fine. But it's objectively well understood that both were instrumental and groundbreaking for various reasons. That's not even up for debate.

Say what you want about your thoughts on the end product ... the aforementioned majority of us will aggressively disagree with you but in the end that's subjective and that's fine ... but to say they weren't artful is just stupid trolling.

If you rock with them thats cool. I'm really just curious because no one I know would ever put either of these groups anywhere near a top anything. I'm 38, born in Philly and raised by older cousins who are 4 to 10 years older than me who basically fit the original term "backpacker", so I'm aware of the beginning of the movement.

But since you want to be sensitive I'll stick my knife in further. De La Soul "oodles of o's" is absolute garbage and no top anything group or album could ever posses this nonsense.

the only way this makes sense is if

a. you dont know anyone
b. the people you know dont know anything about anything

easily top 2 most egregious opinions ever expressed in this site's history
if you grew up with any type of appreciation for this music, the Nobody Beats The Biz scratches alone make that song special. but the beat and rapping is timeless

this is a really bad post, I hope it gets archived for posterity

is an exercise in futility at best. A complete waste of time for everyone involved. That song can only be saved by a story consisting of a get high session in the studio involving a bad batch. But that song making it to production is a failure in QA and management.

The title is elementary..."oodles of o's" being written down on paper by grown men in any time period is embarrassing.

This explains it actually, because I could never be cool with someone over the age of 10 who would ever knowingly put this shit out. I would just be patronizing a 10 year old and think he was slightly retarded if I'm being honest. That shit is like the local news doing a story of a cat stuck in a tree. FOHWTBS

"oodles of o's"... lol.

I've discussed hip-hop with people here, with people in my own circle/my friends, with people at parties, with people at concerts, with people in other states/friends of friends, etc. The majority of people I've ever spoken with about DLS and/or ATCQ hold one or both of them in incredibly high regard.

Knowing yourself and your limitations are hard for people to admit and verbalize. I'm asking fans of either group to identify either who they are that they are in the target audience or classify the who the music suits.

At this point the return value is not there and getting through the emotions of this group is taxing. Which actually answers the question to a degree.

So many great quotables in that song, and that verse specifically but I always got a kick out of:

"Man, the flag was lowered
So my wood was raised
Followed a shielding of my building
To protect me from the blaze"

Also "I bet your ass is darker than a Mobb Deep track" lolol

Between BMS and Stakes, Pos was on another planet man.

i feel pretty dumb for not getting it before.

the intro, The Bizness, and Baby Baby Baby Baby Ooh Baby are the only ones that i bring down a bit.

the intro is kind of not really a full track neither is baby. theyre more like bonus tracks so not sure they really should count. theyre still dope, just not at the same level as the rest.

The Bizness is a track for rap nerds. its dope but the hook kind of brings it down some. the beat is dope but too repetitive. the verses are classic.

rest of the album is 5/5. some songs are definitely not single worthy but theyre great album cuts and really round out the whole album.

i don think my favorites on the album have changed but more tracks got added to rotation.

my favorites that i would put up against any other songs are:
Brakes
Itsoweezee
Pony Ride
Stakes is High
Sunshine

Betta Listen and Down Syndrome might make it to favs.

Love that beat.

And The Bizness was my introduction to Common - one of my 2 all time fav MCs - so it holds a special place in my heart, although my bias and nostalgia aside I can't really argue with your analysis of it objectively.

i legit thought it was just the first part and no raps all these years lol i dont know how i missed the track in there. i was reading about the album earlier and i guess it was originally a remix from BMS, forgot which track.

The Bizness definitely was one of the tracks i kept when i first heard it. I think i was a common stan at that point and barely getting into de la. its a great track but yeah i think the whole hook thing just doesnt work that well. its a cool and unique concept. i have the track rated as a 4.5/5 for what thats worth lol

for now the intro and baby are 4/5.

I bought the album prolly in late 97 or so, when I was starting to really dig into hip hop deeper than mainstream/surface level. And so I heard the first like 30 seconds and my immature, unsophisticated, impatient brain was like "ok onto the music" and skipped the rest. Then for probably 3 years after, I'd just start on track 2 anytime I played the album.

Imagine my delight when I had my license and started to love cruising around playing albums front to back, and as a result discovered this hidden gem of a song. Haha. Pretty quickly became one of my favorites on the album.

Ah, the insult because of a different opinion.

Also, let’s not even talk about the remixes. That’s not even a discussion.

So sales, notoriety, and production are not metrics to be used to compare rivals?

Nonsense. You don’t make the rules.

1. The production is not close. De la soul does not have one song that compares to Bonita Applebum or Electric relaxation. Overall album production is not close either. De la soul just has the weaker production.

However, lyrically. I give that to de la. Phife was only great on one album, but decent on the rest. However, his style and form fit the tribe model.

“ beats that are hard, best that are funky, make you get hooked like a hip hop junky”

That’s the huge difference tribes’ beats are just far superior due to the music excellence of qtip , and no one in de la can match that.

That’s why tribe was the best group in native tongue..... tips jazz production expertise and the ability to make music for the underground and to ring in commercially without selling out.

De la couldn’t do that.

Anyway this is all so wrong, IMO, re: the production and "the ability to make music for the underground and to ring in commercially without selling out. De la couldn’t do that." De La *DID* do that.

Sales don’t lie.

De la’s biggest song is Me, Myself and I , sold 500,000 ( gold) ...but other than that ,
,and the album it appeared on, no big sales.

Oh my god, Scenario and Bonita Applebum remixes are considered some of the greatest remixes of all time.

I have yet to see de la’s remixes in a top ten list.

DJs, lyricists, breakers.....” how can I move the crowd?”

Low end theory
Instinctive travels
3 feet high and rising
De la soul is dead
Midnight Marauders
Buhloone Mind State
Grind Date
...we got it from here

That’s how I rank them.

But Low End Theory changed the sound and landscape of hip hop...and everybody else followed.

“Released on September 24, 1991, A Tribe Called Quest’s The Low End Theory is the quintessential moment where hip-hop let its jazz muse fly. Others – most notably Gang Starr – had explored fusions between jazz and hip-hop, but Q-Tip, Phife Dawg and Ali Shaheed Muhammad evoked a cool bebop ethos that none had achieved before. “

Secondly tribe’s great success led to the demise of native tongue. The jealousy and hate of JBs and de la is what killed everything, because qtip switched engineering studios. He didn’t want any of the native tongue engineers anymore and switched to Chris lightly as management. The rest is history.

“10. The Low End Theory marked the beginning of the end of Native Tongues.
During the recording sessions for The Low End Theory, Q-Tip decided to switch from pioneering New York DJ and Native Tongues mentor Red Alert to Russell Simmons’ Rush Management, with Chris Lighty as their point man. The split opened wounds that never truly healed between Tribe and De La, and on the other side, the innovative, perpetually underrated Jungle Brothers. “Jungle didn’t fuck with us . Everybody was hurt,” Tip told Vibe in a 2007 story”

Tribe is the superior group for so many reasons. This is no fan boy stance.

There is no hip hop list where de la is ahead of tribe.

Example: Tribe had not made an album in decades. They release an album with jarobi and the entire world responded. It’s a pretty decent album, not groundbreaking, but a good release. De la’s recent albums ,not so much.

Problem with De la is that they come off as if they are smarter than their audience. Dope lyricists, but lyrically arrogant.

Tribe is consistent as fuck from front to back, at least their heralded albums. Jazzy, hypnotic, head-nodding music with fun and sometimes goofy lyrics, and they rarely if ever failed to deliver on those things.

De La is more experimental/take more chances, is more exciting, are better lyricists, and while they have a letdown or two in their catalog, their highs are higher IMO. From a musical standpoint only. Not sales, impact, whatever.

Again, super simplistic, but that's my personal take on the two.

But they are both top 3 for me so I won't say a negative word about Tribe ever, nor will I fight you all that hard if your opinion is that Tribe > DLS.

I do take exception to your De La disparagement, tho. LOL. There is no wrong answer here.

or at least are credited for the impact. they are the bigger name. no question.

most fans are going to name tribe as a favorite.

i would guess most artists would list de la as a bigger inspiration BUT its close. theyre both amazing.

tribe made a sound that worked so well and perfected it. the sound still stands up.

de la made a sound that changed how people made music. then they made another sound. then another...and another that spawned the whole underground wave.

I agree with your take. Good comparison.

De la isn’t wack. I like them, too. Top 10 , top 20 hip hop group.

De la soul is dead is my favorite album by them. I bang that all the time.

But de la soul over tribe just seems like a bitter statement by bitter people who are bitter that tribe gets way more recognition. De la will never have the huge cult following like MF DOOM or the Universal Love like Tribe.

Now one thing I will say is there a huge drop off for tribe after low end theory. Qtip stop caring about the group musically and focused on producing for and with other people ( dilla) and his solo stuff ( which had success critically and sales wise).

I mean I don't understand why people have to do this. I enjoy De La's music more and think they're a better/more talented group. So do, it seems, several other people here and elsewhere. Why do you have to ascribe some strange ulterior motive to our personal opinions ?

If anything *you* are the one who sounds bitter, defensive and angry about the fact that some folks believe that DLS is the better group. Evidenced by your desperate attempts above to attach some other motive to it beyond "it's our fucking opinion".

LOL wtf. Wouldn't "a huge drop off" following literally their second album kind of torpedo your argument ?

Better albums? Tribe

Better songs? De La

Better production? Tribe

Better raps? De La

Bigger risks? De La

Bigger impact? Tribe

Best overall artist? Tip...but De La has no weak link at all (no disrespect, just being honest. Dave >>>>)

Push...but Tribe probably gets the nod gun to my head. Tip is under appreciated.

I legit prefer the Roots to both, but that is personal preference.

I agree. They win there. And they were more focused as a group.
Let’s be honest tribe is all qtip.

I mean phife was messing off in the streets for the first album while tip and ali were shaping their sound in the studio. Tip had to beg him to get his stuff together for the second album. Phife was more of a sports head.

So yeah, collectively, de la is the better group.

by themselves...

While I love De La they remind me of Little Brother. Dope as hell but spend too much time complaining about the state of music or where they are commercially.

They are downer music.. lol.

Dope as hell tho.

In response to Reply # 0

Tribe has 2 absolute complete ALL TIME GREAT albums with The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders.

As much as I love De La they just don't have albums that are that insanely great. They have GREAT albums - even INSANELY GREAT albums - but not up to Tribe's best. This is all IMHO.

My credentials: I was purchasing these albums in real time with ACTUAL money.

just not what I was expecting at the time.

I’m halfway thru Stakes is High.

I still feel like:
3FT - groundbreaking classic
DLSID - somehow they topped the first album, instant classic
Buhloone - nah man, new direction.. wasn’t on the level as the first 2
Stakes - okay, they are back
AOI 1 - uh oh.. not like this
AOI 2 - pretty sure I gave up and didn’t even listen to this album
Grind Date - Yezzir.. they are BACK.
Anonymous - wtf is this half De La half guest… oh wait, its not THAT bad but its not that De La I’m used to.

I know they had some other stuff but not sure I would call them albums

I love this story regarding how influential Pos was with Q-tip. Love the rivalry too. I always thought that De La were the ideas engine behind Native Tongues and Tribe was always better at commercializing and mainstreaming the sound.

Low End Theory just might be better than anything De La ever put out when you look back at everything. We are really splitting hairs when trying to compare their catalog record for record. If you go by the last record that both groups put out, then the edge will go to Tribe. Also what Shaheed is doing these days with Younge is keeping him and that vibe alive to this day while De La stays dormant.

For you to have Speakerboxxx/The Love Below in the “classic” category is completely utterly fucking ridiculous.

But then… to top that off by putting Southernplaya in the “great” category beneath it makes it even that much worse.

That’s some all-time “I wanna lost my hip-hop card” bullshit right there bruh.

Actually it’s not even a switch to me….I have no use for that Double album or Idlewild. Neither is even “good” to me. But I’d say SPCM is classic….especially if all those other albums are classic. It’s in the same category. DLSID, ATLiens, and Aquemini are the elite of the elite classics to me.

Minor switch, but I’ll take Bionix over Mosaic Thump anyday.

I’d personally bump Grind Date to “classic”.

Since when is calling something great an insult or diminishing? I love Southerplayalistic. At a point I'd say it was my second favorite Outkast record after Aquemini. The thing is it has 6 tracks that are straight up classics and 6 that are really good/great.

Having it a tier below ATLiens and Aquemini is not crazy.

These guys did it:
1. ATLiens - 9.70
2. Aquemini - 9.56
3. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik - 8.63
4. Stankonia - 8.30
5. Speakerboxxx - 7.48
6. The Love Below - 7.30
7. Idlewild - 5.56

https://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=5&topic_id=3038987&mesg_id=3038987&listing_type=search#3039347

Now SB/TLB I think is underrated and over-hated. If you can't get with Andre's side then okay. Speakerboxx has 9 bangers and 4 good songs. These albums have their biggest songs so they can carry some filler. If we're going straight music, yes drop them. I was trying to give Outkast a fighting chance to overcome my De La bias.

So we can drop SP/TLB to good, the high's on them do a ton of work. Yes I was wrong for putting them as classics. Not wrong about Southern though.

I love De La but that album was inconsistent and had way too many fillers.

I’d put Stakes is High higher than it.

I think this is a generational thing because a lot of folks on here didn’t appreciate 3 Feet or even listen to it.

I was going to put this in the other thread but didn’t want to ruin it.. lol

and FOH at De La being better than Tribe. They were better at staying together but those first 3 Tribe Albums.. man listen.

and I’m a huuuge De La fan

but..

if you put albums head to head ionno..

3Ft High vs Instinctive
De La is Dead vs Low End Theory
Stakes is High vs MM
Buhloone vs Beats Rhyme and Life
Grind Date vs We Got it From Here
Anonymous vs Love Movement

I definitely feel like Tribe lost their mojo on their last 2 albums before We got it from here.
But I also believe those AOI albums were kinda doo doo too.

and honestly I can’t think of any song in De La’s catalog better than Electric Relaxation.

also, am I bugging or was De La not on either scenario songs? I wonder why? Just realized this even though I’ve always “known”

The Outlaws with the inclusion of Pac was better than all them and The Beatles. Tupac started that whole native tongue trend but switched it up and choose thug life. Pac is also a better actor than Mos Def, Will Smith, and Denzel. 50 being almost Pac level when it comes to acting.

Low End Theory changed the landscape of hip hop and brought
in the boom bap sounds and underground jazz loops( they weren’t the first, but they
did it the best …as well as gangstarr).

MM is a good album, but ain’t Low Theory level, no way no how.

That album gave birth to possibly the greatest posse cut off all time.
Phife lyricism was at a all time high on that album, especially compared
to MM. He wasn’t as good. Both him and tip were at their best lyrically
on Low End Theory

I never forget when I played that album for the first time, and “Excursions” came on,
I was like what the fuck? That Ron Carter baseline just set it off

And then the engineers who helped to make that album, with a lot of sound engineers
saying that Low End is the greatest hip hop album ever made….and I agree

Low End Theory tells a SONIC story….going from the daisy age to “ Beats that are hard.
Beats that are funky, make you get hooked like a crack head junky”

And the hip hop quotables from that album?

- Bo Knows this and Bo knows that , but Bo don’t know jack , because
Bo can’t rap

- Industry rule number 4080, record company people are shadyyyyyy

- all I do is write rhymes, eat, drink, shit, bone……lol

MM ain’t got it like that. Low End Theory is perfection in its purest form

Come on , Son!

Low End Theory: 43 ( Top 50!)
MM: 201

That’s checkmate.

Nothing is hire than RS, fam

MM is not as underground or hard , and is more brassy in sound and lyrics. It’s a
really good album, but there is only one song that I really repeat and
love off the album and that is Electric Relaxation.

There isn’t one record on MM that lyrically touches “check the rhymes”, “date rape”,
“Excursions” or “ vibes and stuff”…

Qtip:

“It was listening to N.W.A’s Straight Outta Compton that inspired us to make The Low End Theory,” Q-Tip said in an MTV News interview. “And years later I spoke to Dr. Dre and he told me that hearing The Low End Theory inspired him to make The Chronic.”

And both magazines have LET over MM. Hell, most
hip hop all time lists have LET over MM, so their
some weight there.

We just agree to disagree, and leave it at that.

It got 5 Mics, MM didn’t

Tribes first album and LET both got 5 mics….MM didn’t.
There is a reason for that. It’s a step below.

I guess this is the part where you discredit the The Source,

LET over MM that’s not a I’m trying to convince myself argument. That’s
an acknowledgment of factual information.

This is not a situation of taking personal shots at one another, which is
what you like to do most of the times in a debate instead of researching and providing
information to support your stand.

I can provide you tons of evidence and data on how LET is more legendary
than MM even though MM is a good album.

And then the music artists themselves who were highly influenced by LET.
If LET wasn’t created, do we still get THE CHRONIC? I’m not sure that
we do, considering how much LET influenced Dre while he was producing the
album.

i mean, look at how trash this review sounds: https://www.hiphopnostalgia.com/2014/06/a-tribe-called-quest-midnight-marauders.html

that's the actual review, written by Dream Hampton (who some people already have problems with). it sounds like she wrote that half asleep the day it it was due to be turned in.

and let's remember: a review is literally ONE PERSON'S OPINION of how a record sounded TO THEM at or around the time it came out. so, 5 mics or 1 mic, using that as a STAMP to certify an album for ALL TIME is kinda crazy.

LET was groundbreaking but it ain't no MM. it has a few flaws. MM cleaned up the flaws and was the execution of musical mastery.

music business, who also helped to mix and sculpt the sound for the album,
stated that it is a perfect album and masterclass of a sound.

You say that it’s not and it has flaws (lol).

So who should we acknowledge, an OKP poster, or a master, Grammy award
winning sound engineer in the music business?

I’m just wondering.

And getting so aggy over comparing two amazing albums is...weird.

You prefer LET. Others prefer MM.

For some of us, it honestly depends on the day and can't call it.

You're acting like dudes are talking about a trash album. Citing magazines and shit lol.

like, what does it mean if Bob Power (not Bob Powers) likes what he did on LET more that what he did on MM (which you haven't prove to be true yet, btw)?

does that mean it's a definitive stamp that LET is the better album? cuz, you act like it is.

you doth protest too much, as usual.

In response to Reply # 266

I've settled on when you listened to the album as where you put it. I was in 10th/11th grade when the singles and album dropped for Low End, and it absolutely helped shape my idea of what hip hop sounds like. My cousin is 3 years younger, so Midnight hit him the same way at the same time in his life.

I don't think you can go wrong with either album. I will admit MM is a technical 'better' album across the board, production, lyrics, etc. But my 'favorite' is always going to be LET. I'll never argue with someone else's decision, but I'm not moving off mine.

MM is a very good album, and it is part of my collection. It just isn’t as lyrically genius or
groundbreaking as LET

That album just has so many legendary elements from getting the great Jazz
artist Ron Carter to play on the album, to changing the sonic landscape of hip hop,
to introducing Busta Rhymes to the world ( Scenario put him on the global map).
The introduction of jazz over low end hard beats, and how those sounds were sculpted
and layered to create a moving audio experience, gave hip hop a raw, mature sound
for all generations to enjoy.

LET made Tribe and established them as one of the greatest groups ever, and
considering how most artists slump on their sophomoric album, Tribe knocked it
out the park.

its why I keep wondering how people can say BMS is De La’s best album

but if you were in HS when it dropped or it was your introduction to De La it makes sense.

I had a friend who said his younger brother didn’t know Illmatic existed because he grew up with If I Ruled The World on BET video.

De La albums seem to grow on people with time. At best the reaction to it is still mixed right now though.

I really like BRL, it has some of tribe's best songs. Just wish it was more consistent.

I think I like The Love Movement less as more time passes. Very little on it that I go back to. It doesn't have any bad songs but it's mostly just good songs, few great ones.

Being generous these are my favorites on it:
Find a Way
Common Ground (Get It Goin' On)
Give Me
Pad & Pen
Rock Rock Y'all

Being conservative these are my favorites on ATAN:
Pain
Memory of... (US)
Snoopies
Greyhounds
Drawn
Here in After

For me BRL and ATAN are pretty equal but I wouldn't be mad at putting BRL above it.

Drawn is really dope but the buildup is too long, so subsequently Pos’ section is too short. Again, dope, but too short. The buildup could’ve started around 3:00 and I would’ve been good. I love some Little Dragon and the use of Yukimi’s voice is stellar from 3:45 in the song. It’s a good track, but damn it could’ve been so much better even still. I always skip ahead when it comes on.

I read that "Deaf 2 U," a production duo who did some beats on one or both of the AOI albums, includes Pos' younger brother. Is that the same brother he was referring to on "My Brother is a Basehead" ?

I'm sure I could find it online somewhere but I'm busy and am hoping someone here knows off top.
