"Los Angeles in late August. LA OKPs help me out"

Finally taking a real vacation. Heading to Los Angeles the week of the 20th for a week. LA OKPs...

- Anything dope going on between the 19th and 25th?
- Where can I grab some green?
- What are some good places to drive to outside the city?
- Any open mics? Especially soul, jazz or rock.
- House music anywhere?
- Anyone know of some dope vegan spots?

Staples:
Cafe Gratitude
Sage <-- personal fav, jackfruit burrito FTW
Casa Madre

By green, do you mean weed?
Try to hit dispensaries downtown...otherwise you'll get hit with the 30% tax

I use fusicology for events, they're usually on it
https://fusicology.com/eventlist/?cid=LA&v=cal&mn=08&y=2018&d=24&f=rg
Some regular functions worth checking out;
Motown on Monday, MOM
Cherry Poppin Wednesdays
Doin' It

Check the echo/echoplex too, they're always throwing dope parties
https://www.spacelandpresents.com/events/the-echo/

I think Los Globos is more of a house vide

Where are you staying?

AirBNB in East LA. Renting a car, so we'll be riding around a bit. I want to get out of the city too, and see some of southern California. I've only been to San Francisco previously.

Put those on your list

TBH, you won't be spending too much time in 'LA'

...you'll understand when you get here...

The beach communities are all different and that's where I drive to

From Marina del Ray to Malibu and you've got Venice and Santa Monica in between

Venice is f'n nuts!

Malibu is too far to be considered LA, but there's a rail that goes to Santa Monica so that is LA to me

the Valley (North Hollywood/Burbank) and Pasadena isnt LA, but Highland Park/Boyle Heights are 10 minutes from downtown. The borders for me are Glendale (North), Santa Monica (West), Long Beach (South) and East LA

i.e. I know Compton is a separate city technically but it feels/looks like LA

I was speaking as a former east coaster...to someone who hasn't been to LA yet

The downtown area isn't like...really, any other city I've been to

Downtown LA literally becomes a ghost town as people leave work and nobody lives downtown

So if someone is coming to visit/vacay, I'm sure they won't be spending much time in what they are accustomed to as far as a large US city is concerned

They'll probably be spending more time on the fringes...beaches, enclaves, etc...

datall.

and hasn't been for at least a decade. some of the best restaurants are in DTLA. Staples is DTLA, so is the US Bank building and the slide and view area they have near the top. Little Toyko is in DTLA, and has amazing bars (Far Bar, Sake Dojo, Eighty-Two, Angel City, etc).

Little Toyko also has a dope collection of street art. MOCA and The Brand are in DTLA. etc etc etc.

I've lived here for 6 years now, after relocating from Philly

...that observation is based on my experience...

DTLA does not compare to most other US major cities, IMO

we'll see if the OP makes the same observation

So you might want to do some googling ahead of time (or hopefully someone gives you some advice) for a place that specifically does recreational.

Last time I was in the area (admittedly, January) I went into a medical dispensary thinking they'd sell to anyone by now, but they asked me for a doctor's note and turned me away when I didn't have one. Apparently that was the story almost everywhere. When I checked again a few weeks ago (in anticipation of going back for a few months this winter), I could still only find a handful of recreational sources.

Gotta peep calendars on that, I am sure there is something you will dig and if I spot something I will in box.
>- Where can I grab some green?
Weed is legal here all you need is a driver's license and you can go to a dispensory and buy all kinds of shit. Flowers, wax, crumble, shatter, hash, edibles, you name it. Go on weedmaps to check out addresses and selection, most places have somewhat accurate menus posted.
>- What are some good places to drive to outside the city?
Cruise up PCH I think starting in Venice and going up to Malibu seems like a pretty good route to take. If you like the mountains you can go to Upland and drive up or a little farther out and go up to Big Bear.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

for green:

do your research. i went to a place near UCLA that was hella expensive. MedMen i've heard is similar. i go to a hood spot in pasadena, but Erba in Santa Monica is also a spot i go that has $20 8ths that are fire.

beaches:

i recommend Balboa Island near Newport Beach, or Malibu (google Howes market in Malibu and go near there). Venice Beach only if you want to see transients and tourists on the beach.

sites to see:

1 getty center: i worked there for 7 years. the cactus garden has amazing views of los angeles.

2. runyun canyon for hollywood sign and views of los angeles

3. amoeba in hollywood

4. dodger game

5. Common/Queen Latifah at hollywood bowl. Also, Kamasi Washington will be there with Florence and the Machine.

6. John Brown's son is buried in the san gabriel mountains. there's a placard where he's buried.

7. joshua tree is a 2 hour drive, but worth it.

8. you can drive 2 hours or take the surfliner to san diego.

food to eat:

1. Gus' BBQ

2. In N Out of course

3. Mexicali Tacos in Chinatown

4. Far Bar/Sake House for good Japanese whiskey/liquor in Little Tokyo

i think stonesthrow is having sunday pool parties at the line in koreatown. old school deep house look up dj marques wyatt, he has events all the time. dub club is a dope reggae wednesdays is a dope reggae night. AMFDTLA festival day 2 is sunday the 19th - https://amfdtla.com/lineup
maybe try out the newish downtown bar/restaurant 71 floors up at 71above (dress code fyi...you can hit the bar and the views if you're not dropping for a $fat$ dinner).
