It wasn't a big deal. The one girl I'm thinking of dated almost exclusively black dudes. I think her friends were the reflection of how she grew up but she was into black guys.

They always had a different look and mannerism about them, which was cool because I was never really a fan of the local Philly jawns. Smiling vs. frowning, etc. Never got past hollering tho, because I realized that those types tend to have radically different world views than I do.

their garments are typically not wavy and they walk different.

don't let 'em try to fist bump..."my nigga...are you tryna jhoust with your arm or what?"

they walk slu-footed. on the balls of their feet.

They're good for rockin a solid-colored dress shirt of the weirdest TJ Maxx hue of blue available. No tie. Top button (or two) undone.

sometimes there isn't a moustache.

at least that's the template out here.

its a spectrum

some folks have issues with their blackness

and

some folks just found white folks to be easier for them to be around

and

some folks had lived a life where they went to white schools and existed in white spaces so in turn their village turned out to be white but they had no issues or fears about their own blackness - these were the interesting folks because they kinda DGAF about appearances like being very comfortable about life shit in front of their white folks - for example, just not being afraid to be super duper black about shit.

"You know what that fool said to me? He said "come get me, it's late". I was like nigga, is you serious? It's 11pm and I am sleep, I ain't doing shit for you boo"

I call it the Jessica Williams type. I've seen folks who switch up based on the crowd they around to adapt but I wonder if the Jessica Williams type turns up their blackness around their white friends like a Key & Peele skit?

Aight, so J-willy is kinda a tough one to think about

She grew up in what I assume to be the black parts of Los Angeles in a two parent home and yet she kinda has a weird relationship to blackness while at the same time using blackness as a tool for career gains

I think she is black when its convenient

If all that is true it's something wrong with them.

She was raised by her white mom, in a small town and had mostly white friends. Not suburban yuppies, small not rich NE PA town. Her friends were cool, as were her mom and relatives (white).

She knew who she was tho, and didn't have that 'tragic mixed girl' thing going on. She considered herself black, and used to get mad when I joked about her 'being my white girl.'

She was my college GF, so she didn't have a big dating history at that point. She's married now, to a Mexican dude.

I think being biracial was a big push her to decide who she was. Her mom is white, and growing up in NE PA she had quite a few racist experiences (usually by older white guys) where people treated her and/or her mom like shit because she was black. Meanwhile, the black guys around her probably sweated her as she got older. I'm sure she noticed.

most of my black friends are people i know from either elementary school, college or playing bball.

most of my white friends are people i know from middle and high school, work and playing soccer.

so at different times i've heard "you only hang out with XXX group. how come?"
but that's just how you specifically know me.

I knew them but I could never date them because of the obvious.

I grew up on the burbs outside of Pittsburgh and while the area was mostly white we had a STRONG Black community.

What’s crazy tho is some of my friends on FB from back home have white friends who post real suspect and these folks let them rock.

and while most of my wife’s friends are Black her best friend from college is white... she’s from Portsmouth tho.

no issues related to that. other than I would clown the way she talked. that was my immaturity and lack of exposure tho.

she told me, years later, that part of he attraction to me was to maybe get her more black friends. almost like she thought my friends would end up being her friends too. that didn't happen.

We had class together in college. She was smart and fine and I pursued her for months. I knew she was mixed, but the way she talked and the things she was into made it seems like she wasn't /that/ kind of mixed girl. I should have figured it out when she told me she was a big Coldplay fan. Whatever. Anyway we start dating and when I meet her fam, it turns out she was raised by her white grandparents. Oh. Ok. White liberals. So, over the course of us dating, she often jokes about how black she is and asks me if I've ever dated or could see myself dating a white woman. "Nah." She says the same. She could never, ever see herself with a white guy.
Today. She's married to the lumberjackiest white muhfucka you've ever seen.

*actually to be fair, when we started dating her best friends were another mixed/black girl, a korean/mexican girl, a white girl, and an Irani dude. Her circle seemed pretty mixed. But after we broke up, I noticed though that it became more and more white.

they are halfway out the door.

My first girlfriend was from Cali, San Jose. She was always on some “I know you gonna leave me for a white girl”

Guess who moved back to Cali and married white years later?

Come to find out even tho we lived in the burbs she had more Black friends in PA than in Cali. Most of her friends in Cali were white or off white.

woman 1 - white parent, though adopted by a black family and a delta. the way she embraced white people was seemingly because they tolerated her the best. her personality was a bit abrasive. i imagine her white friends thought of her mostly as their sassy black friend.

woman 2 - black family, from new orleans, but went to school on the west coast 'to be free'. All her friends I knew of were white, the majority of guys she was with were white, no relationships though. after me, she became completely pro-black. she's now a popular black twitter member. but, now lives in a very white part of new england. so, she may privately be back to the whites despite her online presence. her dad still reaches out to me, after all these years, so i'm imagining she's not introducing her romantic interests to the family for a reason.

there's a few others i've just dated, who at most only have token black friends. Their commonality is that they either grew up with or went to school mostly with white people, so they feel most comfortable with them, yet they each seem to secretly hate white folk at the same time.
