But also because partisanship can be such a dangerous drug.

I'm afraid there's one or two jurors, probably Trump supporters, who will find every excuse they can not to convict.

So I'm expecting a mistrial. And Trump will milk that all the way to shutting down the entire Mueller probe.

If he *does* get a sentence, then yeah, green+purple.

Manafort trial judge suggests prosecutor so ‘frustrated’ he’s tearing up.

http://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/400677-manafort-trial-judge-suggests-prosecutor-so-frustrated-hes-tearing

The judge in former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s trial suggested to a prosecutor for special counsel Robert Mueller that he is “so frustrated” that there were tears in his eyes.

Bloomberg reported that U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III made the comment to prosecutor Greg Andres during a discussion out of earshot of the jury and members of the media.

“I understand how frustrated you are,” Ellis said. “In fact, there’s tears in your eyes right now.’’
Andres disputed Ellis’s statement, to which the judge replied, “Well, they’re watery.”

Tensions have existed between the prosecutors and Ellis throughout the trial. The judge has asked members of both sides to refrain from making facial expressions that might influence the jury.

He has also criticized Mueller’s team for presenting too much evidence on Manafort’s spending, arguing that spending on luxuries is not a crime.

Bloomberg reported that Ellis and Andres had other tense private conversations during the trial on Monday, during which former Manafort associate Richard Gates testified that he and Manafort committed crimes.

Andres claimed that Ellis was preventing him from asking essential questions for the trial. Ellis disputed that he was prioritizing speed over the prosecutor’s arguments.

The pair have had other confrontations during the trial, according to Bloomberg.

“Look at me when you’re talking to me,’’ Ellis said to Andres at one point.

“I’m sorry, judge, I was,’’ the prosecutor replied.

“No, you weren’t,’’ Ellis said. “You were looking down.’’

“Because I don’t want to get in trouble for some facial expression,’’ Andres said. “I don’t want to get yelled at again by the court for having some facial expression when I’m not doing anything wrong, but trying my case."

Manafort is on trial for alleged financial crimes related to his work for a pro-Russia political party in Ukraine. The charges are being brought as part of Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, including whether members of the Trump campaign coordinated with Moscow.

I don't think you can read into it that the trial isn't going well for the prosecution, especially when we haven't seen the type of grilling the defense receives.

His crimes are blatant. He will get real time and he is so radioactive trump wouldn't pardon him.

The question to me is do they throw him in jail and call it a day or do they move up the ladder to bigger fish.

so dude is getting years on top of years.

if he aint getting a pardon (big if)...dude may still flip.

im not sure they would even need him to flip at this point tho. gates was pretty much his right hand man and even stayed on longer than manafort (well into the transition). im sure he has more up his sleeve than we think.

and they still havent unveiled flynn. they keep pushing his sentencing back (so he is most likely still helping the investigation).

I'm down to YouTube tutorials, music videos and the occasional Netflix series.

I *do* hit up news websites several times a week, but I tend to focus on local news so I miss a lot of the national stuff.

like ny has a double jeopardy loophole that would need to be closed by a dem governor and dem legislature (without the dems who caucus with repubs in the state senate) to change the law.
https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2018/04/schneiderman-double-jeopardy/558389/

even worse...the supreme court (surprise surprise) agreed to take on the issue of fed/state double jeopardy in its entirety the next term.
https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/28/politics/supreme-court-double-jeopardy-clause/index.html

so they could rule that trying people at state level for related crimes they faced at the federal level is unconstitutional...essentially making federal pardons universal and impossible to circumvent. and with 2 trump-appointed justices...including one who trump basically appointed because of his legal opinions indicating the president is virtually above the law...you know what the likely outcome is.

I don't think Trump will pardon him either. If he does, he will be forced to tell everything he knows and he can't plead the 5th. He will also be charged with state crimes. I trust that Mueller knows what he's doing, I don't think Paulie Walnuts has a chance.

It depends if Trump gives him a blanket pardon for any and all crimes committed (convicted or not) or only pardons him on the charges he was convicted on.

Blanket pardon takes away Manafort's 5th amendment on any topic, so he would be compelled to testify.

A convicted pardon (sorry, don't know the proper term for this) takes away Manafort's 5th amendment only on the crimes he was convicted on (bank fraud, etc.). In this instance Manafort could still use his 5th amendment on his knowledge pertaining to his or Trumps direct ties or dealings with Russia. So it may be in Trumps benefit to only pardon Manafort on the crimes he was convicted on so Manafort can invoke his 5th amendment later on in court.

That makes me very cynical about the idea of guys

If they went easy on this guy, why would they go hard

I just don’t think rich white men are going to face
justice.

In response to Reply # 61

Liddy acted in several films, including Street Asylum, Feds, Adventures in Spying, Camp Cucamonga, and Rules of Engagement. He appeared on such television shows as The Highwayman, Airwolf, Fear Factor, Perry Mason, and MacGyver. He had recurring roles in Miami Vice and Super Force, and guest starred in Al Franken's LateLine. On April 7, 1986, he appeared at WrestleMania II as a guest judge for a boxing match between Mr. T (with Joe Frazier and The Haiti Kid) versus Roddy Piper (with Bob Orton and Lou Duva).

Liddy co-starred on 18 Wheels of Justice as the crime boss Jacob Calder from January 12, 2000 to June 6, 2001.

Liddy appeared on a celebrity edition Fear Factor, the show's series finale, on September 12, 2006 (filmed in November 2005). At 75 years of age, Liddy was the oldest contestant ever to appear on the show. Liddy beat the competition in the first two stunts, winning two motorcycles custom built by Metropolitan Chopper. In the final driving stunt, Liddy crashed and was unable to finish.

He was also an interviewee in the documentary The U.S. vs. John Lennon as well as a commercial spokesman for Rosland Capital, selling gold on television commercials

He plead guilty to...failure to register as a foreign agent

That's sounds like the definition of spy to me

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/spy

"a person employed by one nation to secretly convey classified information of strategic importance to another nation"

It's probably James Bond's job description

He also shared election data with a Russian intelligence operative (SPY)

^^^this should be the spike the ball in the endzone touchdown dance

Serious question, how is this not proof of collusion?

There's lots of proof of collusion, right out there in the open. The evidence is so sprawling that they probably haven't even gathered it all yet. And if they have, they're putting it all together to make as airtight a case as possible.

Manafort was his campaign manager

What else do we need to prove collusion?

I get that the investigation will continue as they've cast a wide net

But I specifically remember getting into a debate about the topic

and my reply was always...google Paul Manafort

I'm sure they'll be able to catch more fish

But specifically IRT collusion, this was and always had been IMO, all the proof that was needed

So even if Manafort was playing spy w/the Russians, 45* has plausible deniability "I didn't know". He doesn't give a fuck about Manafort or anyone else, it's all about protecting *him*. The repugs are also in pursuit of that same goal, protect their golden goose at all costs. So the endgame for Mueller/the SCO is to prove an airtight case against 45*, not just the entirety of the team around him. That's what's tough about this.

I mean consider Watergate, where there was CONCRETE EVIDENCE that Nixon was directly involved in the breakin and the subsequent coverup (via Nixon's own tape recordings in the oval office, etc.). Even with that evidence there was *still* a level of uncertainty that they'd have enough votes in the Watergate committee to ensure that it would be brought to a full House vote on impeachment, nevermind the 2/3 of Senate votes required to actually impeach. And that was with a Democratic majority in both chambers !

So think about how tight this case will need to be against 45* w/a repug controlled Senate. They need an airtight case, several pieces of concrete evidence, AND enough to make the public turn against him.

So it will not be easy even despite the fact that there is overwhelming public evidence on a million levels that there was collusion from top to bottom.

Politics, man.

I'll respectfully disagree with you and leave it at that

The directive is Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election

I think your reply illustrates my point

If we allow the goalposts to be moved to Trumpster himself...all he has to do is deny deny deny

and the Rs can always stand on that soapbox...the investigation never proved Trumpster himself = no collusion

Or, as you referenced, if Congress doesn't get the necessary Yay votes for impeachment = no collusion

Nah, that's a dangerous criteria IMO

These criminal charges and convictions are a byproduct of the investigation

= collusion

I think the investigation has already fulfilled the directive

Again, I get that we want to get as many of the actors as possible

But the specific directive of the investigation has been fulfilled

Collusion has been proven

The issue needs to currently be presented in that context.

Proving that 45* was involved would be part of presenting the most airtight case possible in proving collusion. So my point still stands even if the "directive" is just "Russian collusion" rather than "getting 45*".

I still think there's plausible deniability all over the place. The case needs to be airtight, whether it's the "prez" or everybody else ... because the entire repug party is denying it. And with the Senate controlled the report is useless if they don't have airtight evidence on every single member of the campaign and transition team, including the "prez."

In other words the original directive may have been simply proving collusion between Russia and the campaign ... but that directive can shift as more info becomes available. And I think it's clear that it has shifted. Same happened w/the Clinton/Lewinski scandal, albeit to a more significant degree. The original "directive" of the Independent counsel was to investigate Whitewater. But that shifted once more info about Clinton's sexual transgressions became known and Starr et al decided to pursue that scandal instead.

In response to Reply # 92

We now have 60 more months from count 1 here, so 5 years, but 30 of those months get to overlap with his earlier 4 year sentence, so that brings us up to 6.5 years total.

Then count 2 adds 13 more months, so basically another year.

Total, the man will be in prison for 7.5 years. There is no parole, but from what I understand, due to Federal "good behavior" rules, he'll probably only serve 6.5 of those years.

So whoever voted blue just barely wins the pool.

And I'm gonna go punch a wall somewhere.

Forget impeachment. I don't see a scenario where Trump and his kids leaves office and are not harassed by State AGS for the rest of their miserable lives.

Rich people use to have some fear of the government in that if they get too big for their britches the government could always put a spotlight on them and fine some of the illegal shit they are doing and make their lives miserable.

I mean I know it sounds terrible to support that but something has to keep rich folks from fully indulging their greed and hunger for power.

At least unregulated capitalism. Which is what repugs are constantly fighting for.

So shining a spotlight on rich people is exactly what *should* happen and in the rare cases that their riches were obtained legally, they'll eventually be left alone.

But that never happens. What's actually terrible is a system that rewards terrible people.
