"What are you reading?"
Mon Jun-04-18 05:07 PM by naame

Tell me what you're reading or the last book you read.

I just read a children's book to my daughter yesterday. So yes, tell me about yours.

I just got a couple books from the library yesterday and I have a few books I need to read. I can barely read anything political anymore with all that is going on even though my predilection anytime I go into the bookstore is for current events and biographies. For a while now I've just been reading about correspondence from famous people, mostly so I will feel like the letters I write to my friends aren't so trite.

-Chesapeake Rumrunners
When Prohibition was the law, Chesapeake Bay was a smuggler's paradise. Rogues of all types transported boatloads of forbidden liquor in the days when America experimented with forced, and unforeseeable, temperance. In a style reminiscent of the era it describes, Eric Mills brings to life the world of mobster and preacher, rumrunner and revenue man, moonshine and "real McCoy." It was a whiskey-soaked age that was supposed to be dry. Prohibition may have been the law of the land, but the Chesapeake Bay country was awash in illegal alcohol. The marshes were teeming with hidden stills, and bootleg liquor was smuggled throughout the waterways and adjoining countryside by daring men in fast boats and faster cars. Chesapeake Rumrunners of the Roaring Twenties is a saga of people--watermen and steamer captains, mob racketeers and "legitimate" businessmen--all of them wanting part of the action. In the maze of bay waters, boats played a key role in that action, many disguised as workboats but built for speed and the ability to outmaneuver the law. On the other side, Billy Sunday and an army of temperance crusaders campaigned tirelessly to encourage Prohibition, while federal agents and Coast Guardsmen shared the impossible task of enforcing it. Using a mix of news reports, government records, and local lore, the author has written a fascinating account of a memorable chapter in Chesapeake history.

and:
Owning the Earth:
Barely two centuries ago, most of the world's productive land still belonged either communally to traditional societies or to the higher powers of monarch or church. But that pattern, and the ways of life that went with it, were consigned to history by the most creative and simultaneously destructive cultural force in the modern era: the idea of individual, exclusive ownership of land.

Spreading from both shores of the north Atlantic, it laid waste to traditional communal civilizations, displacing entire peoples from their homelands, and brought into being a unique concept of individual freedom and a distinct form of representative government. By contrast, as Linklater demonstrates, other great civilizations, in Russia, China, and the Islamic world, evolved very different structures of land ownership and thus very different forms of government and social responsibility. The history and evolution of this concept is a fascinating chapter in the history of civilization, offering unexpected insights about how various forms of democracy and capitalism developed, as well as a revealing analysis of a future where the Earth must sustain nine billion lives. Owning the Earth presents a radically new view of mankind's place on the planet and the history behind it.

I've been working on it pretty much forever since I've been given a larger class load and I'm not very organized. But it's absolutely wonderful - a (translated, obviously) Japanese crime novel that wrings the bulk of its suspense out of extremely fraught office politics. I recognize that this makes it sound lame, but I assure you that it's not.

Also:

-our halfassed "God and the State" reading project and "Being and Time" because I finally took it personally when somebody told me that nobody ever reads it.

I grabbed this book from the free/low cost bookshelf at the local library. I had heard about Howard Thurman before but I am glad I picked this one up a few years ago for a buck. The book has really given me some things to think about regarding how the Bible speaks to condition of Black and poor people in the face of this onslaught of white nationalism. I am more picking the book up and putting it back down in between doing other things but I hope to get it done soon.

Really loved the "Three-Body Problem" although some characters were kinda cardboard, I enjoyed the hard sci-fi.
Also raises a bunch of interesting questions about "what's out there" (I don't want to spoil too much).

I'm reading it for a book club I joined. Deadline is Sunday. I started reading yesterday. Gonna knock it out.

I'm on chapter 2 right now. It's a little confusing, with the first names and such but I guess that's the point. *shrugs*

I hadn’t read any of the Binti novellas yet, so it was nice to get them all at one go.

Picked up Ted Chiang’s Exhalation collection and some YA novels to preview for my class next year. Trying to use the library more but it’s hard to wait for new exciting books.

Been getting them for my boy then reading before I give them to him. We both love them.

Also, catching up on several months of Nat Geo and Smithsonian mags.

With the girl: The Book of Three. She decided fantasy is her favorite genre recently, so she got the whole Prydain Chronicles and Lord of the Rings for Christmas. So far she seems to skew a bit to contemporary YA dystopian fantasy (tearing through Mortal Engines on her own) but she did love stuff like Earthsea, Narnia and Dark is Rising, so I'm hopeful these two sets keep her tied to classic high fantasy.

With the littler boy: Bone (Jeff Smith), when we get to it. Still the best.

He's largely stopped reading though outside of comics (though I can't really complain about his tastes there) and the occasional humorous sci fi (loves Douglas Adams, again I can't complain.)

It's very very gratifying when the kids love stuff I loved as a kid (and it's also great finding that some of that stuff also still holds up well). And constantly being on the lookout for new stuff that we'll all enjoy, I've read a lot of great things from the past 30 years that I was "too old for" as it was released.

Another option is audiobooks for car trips... great opportunity to turn down time into literature time.

Awesome. You're doing it right.

Can't wait to introduce him to my kids, my dad would play me the BBC series he'd taped off the radio.

https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/551563/the-bold-world-by-jodie-patterson/9780399179013/

It's a memoir about the life experiences that shaped the author's views about identity, race and gender. She's a Black woman in her 40s. The book came about because she's raising a transgender son. I'm only 40 pages in this 324-page advance paperback copy I purchased from eBay before it was officially released (Shame on me, I know).

So far, it's really good. I am VERY JEALOUS of her writing abilities, voice, and her overall life experiences, save for the transgender child. I love my transgender peeps but society is not nice to y'all and we've got a long way to go. I know this whole experience has made parenting much harder for her....

There are so many reasons why I'm reading it, including nosiness and curiosity. For context: I first learned of her in 2010 as a blogger, entrepreneur and a quasi-social media personality so it's like she's giving me a little scoop inside her very interesting life.

I discovered her and her body care brand GeorgiaNY on the interwebs back in 2010, and then I moved to NYC a year later, where she ran a boutique/hair salon shop on the Bowery. She just seemed like an interesting Black woman. She's friends with Fatima and knows all of these musicians and other creatives. She worked in the very white world that is fashion PR (Zac Posen) not too long ago. And her first husband is well-known restaurateur Serge Becker, who she met when she was a teen. Her dad opened a school for Black children in Harlem, his home neighborhood, in the 1970s. As such, her upbringing was very interesting.

I think she's one of those people or socialites that are in the mix but try to downplay it, though there are certain posts I've seen on Instagram that come off as brag-y (a la, "Oh look. Here's a picture of me and D'Angelo when blah, blah, blah) but I could be overanalyzing.

She's a Spelman alum and I'm very interested in the college experiences of fellow alumnae, particularly those that don't seem like conventional women. My experience there was mediocre. Jodie was also raised in NYC and moved back in the 1990s and I'm always interested in what it's like to be raised in NYC and to come of age there in the early 1990s. A memoir will provide insight.

I admit that her experience as a Black woman raising a transgender son isn't even why I picked up the book. I love a good memoir. Now, having said that, as a Black feminist, it's always a good idea to read works that discuss gender identity. I want to read more feminist and gender works this year.

Thank you for posting this! I don't know how I missed this, and I'm surprised more people on here aren't talking about it. It's about ATCQ!!!

This new book made me remember that dream hampton, at one point, was working on a book with Q-Tip called Industry Rule #4080, or something like that.

Anyway, I picked up Go Ahead in the Rain from my local book shop on lunch today, along with "Black Detroit: A People's History of Self-Determination" by Herb Boyd. I won't get to these until March, tho.

I was tempted to buy the Beastie Boys book. I skimmed through in stores it twice. I first saw it at Strand Bookstore during my NYC Winter Jazz Fest trip last month and again today. I will buy it eventually, although I admit to knowing very little about the Beastie Boys. Based on what I've seen, it seems VERY well put together. I feel like some music books are just slapped together and this one was not.

J.Rocc, one of my faves, plugged some of the music books he read last year and recommended the Beastie book to his followers in the comment section:
https://www.instagram.com/p/BsXO6bNl5D6/

I thought about starting a separate post about the best music books to read (old and new) but these boards aren't that active so I'll refrain.

You can tell a lot of thought was put into the Beastie Boys book. It's a big love letter to NY, having close friends and being curious. The audiobook was great and featured things not in the book and vice versa. It also covered becoming the frat dudes they mocked and ditching original member Kate Schellenbach poorly.

Lots of great comics for that age group.

1. Baltazar/Franco books - they started with Patrick the Wolf Boy, which is hard to find now, but their work on superhero properties is great.
-Tiny Titans (The pre-Teen Titans attend Sidekick City Elementary).
-Superman Family Adventures (lots of libraries have these in single-issue hardcovers) (Aw Yeah Zod Dogs!)
-Itty Bitty Hellboy
-Itty Bitty Mask
and then they have some creator-owned stuff that's great. Aw Yeah Comics is really fun; I found my 14 year old re-reading it recently.

2. Roger Langridge's books are terrific too.
-Snarked might not be just right if the kid hasn't read or heard Lewis Carroll, but even without that background it's still fun story as the spunky daughter of the Red Queen goes searching for the Red King and may or may not encounter the Frumious Bandersnatch.
-The Muppet Show comics. Not sure how available these are since Disney bought the Muppets, but Langridge did a great job capturing the feel of the classic Muppet Show.
-Abigail & the Snowman. Heartbreaking, adorable, relatable to any kid.

3. Sholly Fisch's kids' books for DC.
-DC Superfriends. Pure corn but a great introduction to several of DC's major characters and villains. Constant reinforcement of ideas of tolerance and teamwork. Non-violent
-All-New Batman the Brave & The Bold - nominally the comic adaptation of the best iteration of Batman (and Aquaman) ever, but without as much humor. A little less corny than Superfriends, and again, a great non-violent introduction to the DCU.

4. James Kochalka. Very very very silly books.
-Johnny Boo
-Dragon Puncher
-The Glorkian Warrior

5. Anything from Little Lit... my favorites were the adaptations of folk & fairy tales.

6. 5 might be a little old for Owly by Andy Runton, but at just 5 I'd recommend giving it a try. Charming wordless stories of friendship.

7. Korgi by Christian Slade is beautifully drawn. Occasionally perhaps a little scary as Korgi and his mistress wind up escaping from space aliens, goblins, etc. Also wordless.

8. Zita the Space Girl by Ben Hatke. 5 is young for it but I guarantee the kid will love it, and will be able to re-read for the next ten years.

9. If you're looking for Marvel exposure for the kid, most of Marvel's stuff for that age range misses the mark or skews a little older. I can recommend
-Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius
-Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur
-Squirrel Girl
-Ms Marvel (more of a tween book though)

10. BONE by Jeff Smith, at least volumes 1-3, though my kids loved it so much that we read the whole thing through multiple times when they were still quite young for the high fantasy that follows.

11. Shazam, two volumes
-Shazam and the Monster Society of Evil by Jeff Smith
-Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam by Mike Munkel (apparently Kunkel's HeroBear books are great too but I've never read them).

resource... I think we've read most of the comics in the J-GRA section over the years.

Few other recs:
-Also in the Sholly Fisch line, I forgot to reference Scooby Doo Team-Up. They include a bunch of Hanna-Barbera cartoons I didn't even remember, but the DCU teamups are generally pretty fun.

-Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland - very cool contemporary visitation to a newspaper strip classic (https://www.idwpublishing.com/little-nemo-return-to-slumberland/)

-Bizarro (8 issue mini by Corson/Duarte) is a fun road trip across America with Bizarro and Jimmy Olsen... recommended for read aloud though as dialogue can be confusing (it's Bizarro)

-Power Up was a really fun mini from Boom Box. Some gender boundary pushing in this but my kids didn't bat an eye, which is great.

Down the line a year or two:
-Mouse Guard
-Mice Templar, maybe... a little more graphically violent, I guess, an not as good, but not bad.
-Stuff of Legend (I really like this but my oldest boy didn't, a little too dark, but I love it)

Happy to provide more recs down the line, just inbox me...

will depend a lot on what the kids likes/can handle in terms of purely audio, if you're reading aloud. As you can tell from the above I did a ton of comics with my kids at that age, and saved the 'literature' largely for audiobooks... but we still read plenty of books as well.

5 is kind of a tween age when (for purposes of reading aloud) a lot of picture books might be too kiddy for them, but they don't have the attention span for text-only reading aloud.

A couple picture books that should still fly OK for that age
-Where the Wild Things Are, of course
-There's a Nightmare in my Closet
-Trainstop (no words)
-Flotsam (David Wiesner's books are great, and the structure frequently makes it possible to talk through the books as you read them)
-Harold & the Purple Crayon
In general, checking for Caldecott Medal winners should give you a good list to start with.

Popups have done great things in the hands of artists like Robert Sabuda and David Carter. Anything by those guys is a ton of fun; and at 5, the kids should be able to avoid tearing the books to pieces, and the kids should also treasure these as art as they get older.
They tackle different topics, too... my kids loved the Sabuda Dinosaurs book, but the most visually impressive is probably his 'Beauty & the Beast': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTQLGyaOAkc
Carter's books tend to be kind of game- or challenge-oriented. Blue 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLfiuKam6v8

As for literature:
-I found Roald Dahl to be accessible early, especially the books with heavy Quentin Blake illustrations. Charlie & the Chocolate Factory might work well, also James & theh Giant Peach, but I'd probably start with a shorter one like George's Marvelous Medicine.
-The Wind in the Willows is a classic, really fun read. If the kids want more art, I'd recommend they get the edition illustrated by David Peterson (artist behind the phenomenal Mouse Guard comic): https://www.amazon.com/Wind-Willows-Illustrations-David-Petersen/dp/1631403435
-a lot of the classic kids' books hold up pretty well, even if they're dated (to us). The Mary Poppins books are great, the Pippi Longstocking books are hilarious, even Mr. Popper's Penguins and Dr. Doolittle, The Borrowers and Bedknobs and Broomsticks still resonate fairly well. And what's great is there are relatively contemporary movie versions of most of those, so it gives you an opportunity to show the kids the different versions of a story and talk about what makes one version good and why changes need to be made as a story goes from one medium or time period to another.

Good luck & happy reading -

Casino Royale was the first Bond novel that I've ever read. I can't say that it got me interested in reading more but it was entertaining enough. I was surprised how much of the movie came directly from the novel and how unlikable Bond is in the book.

Not very far into Persuasion yet. This is the fourth Austen novel I'm reading after Pride & Prejudice, Emma and Sense and Sensibility. Really like the first two that I read but wasn't a big fan of Sense.

In response to Reply # 0

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N31BID3/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

Somewhere along the way, our culture lost its definition of manhood, leaving generations of men and men-to-be confused about their roles, responsibilities, relationships, and the reason God made them men. It's into this "no man's land" that New York Times bestselling author Mark Batterson declares his mantra for manhood: play the man.

In this inspiring call to something greater, he helps men understand what it means to be a man of God by unveiling seven virtues of manhood. Mark shares inspiring stories of manhood, including the true story of the hero and martyr Polycarp, who first heard the voice from heaven say, "Play the man." Mark couples those stories with practical ideas about how to disciple the next generation of men. This is more than a book; it's a movement of men who will settle for nothing less than fulfilling their highest calling to be the man and the father God has destined them to be. Play the man. Make the man.

America has imported more warlord theocracy from Afghanistan than it has exported democracy.

I doubt I will ever read this book from beginning to end, since I hardly ever finish a book over 100 pages but yeah I'm reading it when I have to time.

I randomly discovered this earlier today by accident.

I won't be reading it, but just a FYI for any fans that didn't know.

I didn't know he was a novelist, too. How dope!

about halfway through. it's very good. i tried reading it about a decade ago but couldn't get into it. now that i have more life experience i'm connecting with the themes and events of the book in a very deep way. the translation of this book is kind of mind-boggling: it was written in japanese but the words still flow off the page and the similes are effective and apt. there is a lot of parallelism and recurring events and themes throughout. it's a fascinating and engaging read. i'm now a murakami fan and looking forward to reading everything else he's written

and entertaining. I can listen to Scarface tell a story whether rapping, interviews (recently listened to him on Questlove’s podcast which is what reminded me about the book), or in a book all day.

Overall an entertaining, quick read. I most enjoyed the backstories of some of the albums and what he felt about them, and he was pretty open with his feelings about Rap-a-Lot.

The book gives a real first hand account of the Apollo 11 mission, as well as other missions he went on, because he wrote the book himself - no ghost writer. It's a very compelling book which I'm enjoying a great deal.
