I can say dude has always been a good dude when it comes to fans or being approached. He was cool as hell when I met him at the MMM and another time.

I met him a couple times after shows myself and he always showed mega love.
He also gives a TON back to the community and to charities and such, and offers his time and his shine to them. So any awkwardness/corniness/whatever there has been in his rise can be forgiven considering he always seemed to have stayed true to himself and to his mission(s). I respect it.
I'm also a huge fan of his from a music perspective so I may be a little biased.

But also sorta par for the course. It's easy to forget when all the OK Artists were "anti-sellout" or at least were painted into that corner because of how against-the-mainstream they all were early in their careers.
So as soon as any of them crossed over a little bit, the fans here were resistant because of the nostalgia we had for the early days. Kinda natural to feel that way. I did a little bit myself.
But with that said - and I think this is what you're referring to: I think Common got it worse around here than most others in regards to whether or not he was "selling out". When in reality, the truth is in what you said below:

A whole lot of people on here were talking extremely loud, but in the end they were just going through a phase.
I'm not completely letting go of this Oprah angle though. I wasn't aware of this when it happened, but it's clear she really digs Common
