"Avengers: Infinity War is not playing around."

Lots to digest.

First off if you haven't seen every single joint that's come beforehand, you might wanna catch up quickly. References big and small are made to every single film.

With that all said, this thing doesn't waste a moment. Once it starts it keeps going. Bodies drop and keep dropping.

This shit is dark while still being funny. The tone is handled well. In fact, the handheld camera work adds to the film's sense of dread. I would not take kids to see this. For the final 20 minutes you can hear a pin drop it was so quiet.

That's all I'm gonna say cause there's a lot here that I'm sure is gonna be spoiled once the social media embargo lifts at 1:30am EST.

I'm seeing it again in IMAX (the entire film was shot in the format) as I missed a lot during the screening due to laughter and loud gasps.

Everyone says that Marvel had a villain problem in previous films. Would you say Marvel finally gets it right with Thanos?

To be fair, I thought Marvel got it right with Zemos in CA:CW.

He’s a much better comedian than brooding superhero they had him play in the first two solo movies. I think they figured out that in the Avengers they usually used him for comedy so might as well play up that strength in the movie.

Although you can make an argument that they also gave Thor 3 much more freedom to be’ comic book’ dealing in space and mystical places and not having to spend so much screen time on earth.

The first two movies definitely suffered cause of the mandatory check ins with his boo Natalie Portman…who they wrote out completely like she never existed in the third movie. What’s funny is you could tell she didn’t even want to be in the movies herself; what actor wants to be in a marvel movie where all they are is boring and normal?

Thor works best when he’s in crazy space wars/beef mode in the comics and I think that’s why Thor 3 worked more than the other movies even if they slathered too much comedy (although I loved it)

I'm not going to see this movie but I keep thinking "shit, what is left? Arent they just fighting in a bunch of rubble and debris?"

Skyscrapers were just going down like dominoes, and all I could think of was, "Hold on...this shit should roll Metropolis back to the stone age."

Sure enough, fast forward to Batman v. Superman, and all you get out of it is that it really made Bruce Wayne not care for Superman.

The destruction from Avengers: Age of Ultron and the previous movies is a primary plot motivator for the Civil War.

But other than NYC (which, as rich as it is, theoretically could rebuild pretty quickly), I don't think they've really returned to the scene of a huge battle.

the topic has been discussed in the movies and TV shows but if you really want to know, in short, they rebuild. the Netflix shows deal with the rebuild in NYC and how some shady folks even took advantage of that to gain some control over the city. they even deal with how the average person on the street is handling what's been going on and how some people feel about "heroes" now. Agents of SHIELD literally showed them cleaning up after some battles that happened. Civil War dealt with the consequences of The Avengers going around tearing things up fighting bad guys. Spider-Man dealt with Tony Stark creating a company called Damage Control that's been tasked with cleaning up after super-hero battles (that's also referenced on the TV show) and how that affects one guys business in particular. there was actually going to be a whole TV show called Damage Control that deals just with that group who clean up after the Avengers (or anyone else I assume) has a big battle that needs to be cleaned up. not sure if that show is still happening now or not.

A guy had a company that would clean up after the big battles and he got a hold of some alien tech.

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

cause I always thought it was bogus to have that much power and all you would see was the edge of a building falling on no one.

cuz it wasn't like in Avengers where there was an alien army causing all the destruction and they're trying to stop them and protect the people. Superman caused a lot of the destruction himself with what seemed to be little regard for anyone's safety. that's why by time Avengers Age of Ultron came around there was a big deal made of "save/protect the civilians" throughout the movie. even still, The Avengers basically ended up taking the blame for all the destruction anyway.

but after something like 9/11, you can't really have a movie with that level of destruction to a real city and not characterize the aftermath.

Marvel Studios deserves a round of applause for pulling this off. We are moving towards an end of an era, and that starts here. Keyword starts. Avengers: Infinity War highlights the strengths and weakness of ten years of living in this cinematic universe.

Thanos has been teased now for six years since he popped up in the first Avengers film. It was worth the build-up as not only from the first frame do we get how big of a threat he is, but we see what makes him tick. Thanos’ reasoning for doing what he’s doing makes sense. It’s horrifying for sure, but I was so worried he was gonna be a mustache-twirling villain, but he’s fully realized and fleshed. Walking out I understood why Josh Brolin said he got more out of playing Thanos than playing Cable. Much credit is due his way for a really incredible performance.

Once this film starts, it keeps moving. I can say that there’s not a wasted moment in this as the film has a lot to accomplish. For those of you who have theories on the Soul Stone, throw them out the window. One of the biggest surprises as well as emotional beats in this film comes from the Soul Stone sequence. That sequence is important on why you have had to see every single MCU film up until this point as this film makes references big and small to what’s come before.

The Russo brothers deserve a lot of credit for making this film works. The film consistently shifts from funny to super dark walking a tightrope that could’ve teetered into a mess. Part of what makes this work is the handheld camera work that’s being used. The shots and the way the camera moves makes this the most cinematic Avengers film thus far. It’s true that the first two Avengers films have a television film type quality to them, but here Joe and Anthony make you feel the stakes. The scope of this thing is so big, I understand now why every frame of this was shot in IMAX.

With that said, this film does have its problems. Look, the ending here will have you shocked, I’m still shocked by it. But this is only a part of a whole. I’m frustrated that this didn’t exactly have an ending. One of the most referenced sequels of all time The Empire Strikes Back, has a beginning, middle, and end despite its various cliffhangers. Same goes for The Last Jedi. To even further this point each film in The Lord of the Rings trilogy has a beginning, middle, and end despite the fact that it’s one narrative. You can clearly tell this is Infinity War Part 1 before Marvel Studios decided to ditch that for now obvious reasons. Look, whatever Avengers 4 (Infinity War Part 2) is gonna be called, I can go back and judge this as a whole instead of the sum of its parts.

I don’t really like the split narratives either. The Guardians are split up with Thor and going on their own quest eventually meeting up with a group of Avengers. And the rest of the Avengers are globetrotting place to place. I understand why this had to happen as there are so many characters in the MCU (two of which do not appear at all and their absence is mentioned), but this also took the wind out of the sails at times as some stories became less interesting than the others.

The children of Thanos cannot match Thanos’ presence. They are uber-powered stand-ins with no depth to them. In fact, I wondered why were they in the film in the first place. Thanos has a generic army of aliens (not a good thing) for our heroes to punch, these guys added nothing other than getting three of our heroes out into space and setting a trap for later.

And while there are some very cool setpieces, some had me glaze over after a while. I know people are getting tired of CG cities being knocked over, well sorry to say that this has multiple cities being leveled. And speaking of, they gotta do something with the Netflix characters (the whole of Marvel TV in general) cause it’s so distracting to see Midtown under attack and not see the Defenders join in.

Look this works more often than it doesn’t. I enjoyed the film, just not as much as I would have hoped (that’s the problem with hype). With Black Panther literally just having been released upon the world, it’s a tough act for Infinity War to follow. Even more so considering that that’s one of the best comic book films made yet. Moving forward this will have serious consequences and that ending has me wondering just where do they go from here. Seriously, if I was a screenwriter, I’d be lost on how exactly do I resolve this. And going forward one this Marvel and DC should consider is having their heroes meet earlier in solo films or have certain characters costar like Hulk did in Thor: Ragnarok. Avoid everything until you are able to lay eyes on this. You don’t want this spoiled for you.

Honestly, I don't see The Defenders being able to hold their own in a battle of this magnitude. Luke Cage, *maybe*. But Iron Fist ( at least the TV version of him) would be TOTALLY useless against Thanos and his army. IMO, they're 'street' heroes; stronger and/or more equipped than civilians but that's pretty much where their powers end. We're seeing heroes who can alter time, summon lightning, and travel to other galaxies to fight. Where does the surly chick in the leather jacket come in?

great movie, lots of fun. the ending hits hard.

i kind of wish i didnt see it until the day before pt 2, as you said this is definitely part of a whole and doesn't quite seem to stand on its own.

my guess moving forward is that the soul sequence plays a huge part.

Since there's a whole comic where Shuri is The Black Panther, it's not unlikely. The creators even gave her more powers than T'Challa which I didn't find surprising at all.

A mostly cohesive story taking place in multiple galaxies with 40 main characters and 5 storylines

Just the fact that they actually make it work is kinda amazing

But even without counting the big "emotional/audience letdown" of the ending, it kinda still lacked something up to that point

Maybe the pacing and balance between exposition and big action scenes...?

Like for the time spent on the dead star planet making a weapon, they coulda spent more time/effort in the wakanda battle. It was pretty generic for 10 years in the making.

When loki opened the alien portal in Avengers 1,I thought they were gonna end the movie and that would be the cliffhanger for part 2, because NO WAY were they gonna spend another 30 minutes in a full-on in-depth 'saving private Ryan' detailed battle sequence. But they delivered exactly that. But this time, a few of the fights are kinda basic, especially considering what they coulda done with the final battle. & just logistically, tony's crew put up a better fight with less ppl

Thanos was pretty good, this version is better than the rumored ' heart broken by the grim reaper' comics storyline

now its Gonna be real interesting how marvel "puts the toothpaste back in the tube". I'm thinking it will revolve around dr strange.
The coming antman flick could take place before or even after infinity war, but the following film will obviously play a big role leading into the next Avengers. the fact that it's no longer called "infinity war part2" seems weird, like some director switch-up in the storyline(ex- last Jedi). But i trust marvel enough at this point to ride with it.

& i can respect not giving the audience exactly what they want with the storyline/ending, if the payoff in the next one delivers

57. "They took it back to old school horror movie days (spoilers)"
In response to Reply # 0

Meaning, they killed the Black person (Heimdal) first to let the audience know the danger was real lol. I saw that and thought "should've known."
It was pretty funny that Thanos had Hulk too shook to come back out. My dude who loves Hulk is gonna be mad about that.
Dunno where Hawkeye was. I was hoping he would die, because I'm not a fan lol.
And gotdamn they made Thor look amazing... even brought back the old school hammer. Black Panther and the crew were having all kinds of trouble with the aliens until Thor showed up and made them all look damn near useless. Again, should've known.
I noticed Marvel is going with this idea of villains being so addicted to a cause or principle that they'll sacrifice anyone to achieve it. For Thanos, it's balance of the universe. For Killmonger, it was black liberation. While I didn't like this for Killmonger, because it aligns with a real life false narrative that's used to victimize Black people (Black Identity Extremist), I thought it was dope for Thanos and the balance idea. That's an interesting cause to pursue, and I'd like to hear more about what made him choose it in the cinematic universe.

Overall, I thought the movie was a (pretty good) setup for all that comes after it... especially the Captain Marvel movie if you stuck around for the "easter egg." This is the kind of movie where I wish I could watch it and its sequel at the same time, so I can't say "omg it was great" because I know there was no real closure, and I'm still waiting to see how it all ends. Now we have to wait until this time next year to see pt 2, which will seem like forever to some, but at least it's not the 2 years we had to wait from CA: Civil War to now.

completely shut down like that in this story line. The Hulk did catch some serious wreck when he fought The Abomination in 2008's The Incredible Hulk tho. He won that one by the luck of a big chain if I'm remembering correctly. No way he would've won that fight with his hands. The Abomination was giving him that work, but this Thanos ass kicking was on a whole different level. Thanos usually chokes him out with one hand, lifting him off the ground in the comic tho, so I hoped I'd get to see Thanos beat him down on film lol.

when the sequel rolls everything back.

This could be an elegant send off for the OG cast that has been around for 10 years, if this was basically the creation of a second timeline. Meaning, all those who vanished carry on in some other dimension, and those who are left behind lost the war for good and we never see them again.

That would be some hardcore shit that I could rock with.

But I know almost everybody is coming back.

I hated this shit!!
I know...it's my fault. But they couldn't make it at least a little accessible to the newbies?

The only connection I had was with the villian because he was fleshed out a bit. I literally didn't care about anyone else.

It took about 1.5hrs for me to kind of get into it (action for action sake doesn't do it for me). But by then I was off it.

I know sequels have some bit of referencing the old. But this was too much

I could see skipping some but it would just make sense to check some of them out before. way too many characters to reintroduce them in this movie.

or try to watch the ones you have missed

if there are some characters you kind of know about watch one of their movies. like watch the first avengers at minimum, maybe civil war and guardians.

i did watch all the movies before ultron i think and i dont think any of the small connections stuck but i actually enjoyed all the movies so it was all good. dont think its necessary to watch all or even most of them to get the gist of it.

fatigued, because (spoiler) other than black panther and maybe ragnarok, it's the same fucking shit over and over again, and Infinity War isn't really different.

they're pretty much all good, but you don't need 20 hours of punchiness to realize that Iron Man is an (evolving) rich genius jerk when IW lays that out for you in the first fight.

i would add iron man to the list of the ones i would recommend someone watch

iron man
avengers
guardians of the galaxy
civil war

those should give plenty of back story plus are some of their best movies without having to watch 18 films.

who's thor? He's a god. he had a hammer, now he doesn't, his dad's dead, you saw his brother and best friend die, he had to kill his sister and he has a new haircut now. THIS IS ALL IN THE MOVIE

who's the hulk? nigga have you not heard of the hulk?

who's black panther? king of wakanda. technologically advanced, rich as fuck and a total badass. all in the movie.

vision: got an AI brain and an infinity stone in his head. all in the movie.

there's no backstory for hulk and black widow that's actually in the movie to make you care more for them than what you see on screen in IW. by not watching the other movies you've missed a total of ten minutes of development, it's not going to shift it for you.

you can tell there's a thing there...and that's pretty much all anyone has.

same for vision and scarlet witch. Their relationship has 10x more time in this movie than in any other.

Tony and Pepper...like, there's a backstory there that runs three movies, but you're not going to learn things that make their one interaction in the flick more meaningful.

there's nothing about stark and parker that you can't pick up just by seeing them.

yes, you can learn the details of their previous interaction, but the movie shows you immediately how stark and parker regard each other because of how they interact in the first battle. Stark is literally storing a surprise upgraded suit for the "kid" ready to go on a rocket at all times. The hulkbuster suit isn't built for Banner, it's built to fight banner.

what do you need to know about starlord and gamora that you can't see in this movie? if you need two movies to tell you that they're fuckin you got issues bro

Any critique of the 18th entry not being friendly enough to newcomers is completely invalid.

It's not a flaw in the film.

It's a flaw in your decision to go see a movie so deep into the run of a series without catching at least a bullet-points worth of films to catch up going in.

Avengers 1 (introduces the team as a whole)
Avengers 2 (introduces Vision, more info on Infinity Stones)
GOTG 1 (introduces the Guardians, more Infinity Stone info, more Thanos)
Civil War (Bucky, Black Panther, Spidey, why they broke up)
Ragnarok (Doc Strange cameo, where have Hulk & Thor been, sets the start of IW)

That should give most people 95% of who these characters are and why they do what they do without the majority of the solo movies. Yes, you can go in blind never having seen any of these movies and having a basic knowledge of half the characters and figure it out, but I think watching those 5 at some point should lay out most of what the non comic book/movie fan would need.

Hulk and Thor were gone for 3 yrs after the first avengers (Ragnarok)

Spiderman: Homecoming takes place 8yrs after the first avengers

So...did it take Hulk and Thor 5 yrs to get back to Earth?

Maybe I missed this but I was like 'huh'? When '8yrs later' popped up in Homecoming (after Keaton got snatched off the clean up duty).

Also, Captain Marvel is supposed to be an origin story set in the 90's so I'm curious as to how that's going to all play out considering there's only, what, 2 MCU movies (Captain Marvel and Antman and Wasp) slated before Avengers 4 next Summer?

Iron Man now takes place in 2010.

Avengers 1 takes place in 2012.

Spiderman Homecoming happens in 2020. (would have been 2016 if they didn't change Iron Man.)

Infinity Wars takes place in 2018. (Which is after 2020 in this timeline.)

Real answer is: They don't care. Seriously, don't overthink it.

Future needs to claim part of whatever bars he spits like he did Desiigner, allegedly.

He sounds like Future Vandross in that clip so his album needs to get here ASAP.

- loved the irony of the dwarf as a giant

- when Thor got the star working again, there were a few shots that felt alot like the opening of Game of Thrones...wondering if that was intentional because of Peter

- who did Fury beep 911?

LOL, some guy in the theater I was in yelled "Captain Marvel!" when they showed the pager on the ground.
This legit has me even more amped for her movie now, because if she's emergency call for the Thanos collecting all the Infinity Stones? She GOT to be fire.

For Thanos to be so smart. That sure is a dumb plan.
It makes a lot more sense when it's to please Death than to "balance the universe." But of course a plot involving Death wouldn't work for these movies.

And I'm sorry, but the 'deaths' don't carry much gravity when you already know they're coming back.

Movie was straight. It was entertaining. But the emotional trainwreck people are making it out to be, it is not.

Grown folk were in the theater crying, apparently forgetting comic book rule #62:

"Only Uncles named 'Ben' stay dead".

Even Aunt May got a damn "death" and rez.

"we don't sacrifice a life for a life" from Captain America, but how many Wakandan lives were lost when they took him to Africa?

Typical of the white man to bring destruction to the Motherland.
