"Blacks being locked out of weed industry is why Decriminalization is bet..."
Fri Apr-20-18 02:02 PM by Damali

When you decriminalize the sale of weed anyone can do it...it becomes like any other job or gig. the free market decides on who makes money or doesn't.

When you legalize it, the government regulates it, then also decides who gets to sell it. Those approved (read: mostly white people) get to sell, and those who don't (read: mostly black and brown folk) are still doing something illegal if they sell and can still be jailed

see how that works?

DECRIMINALIZE.

Maryland didn't have one vendor that is black owned when they issued the first licenses. Maryland, home of Baltimore, home of the Wire, and PG County, and nobody Black gets to sell or process weed? And I personally know someone who put in an app.

The cost to get the license, and the investment required just to qualify are prohibitive. You honestly need a quarter of a million dollars if you are going to do it.

My friend has an Air BnB and a white group rented it while they finished their application...they left a draft of it in the space. So I'm not talking out of my ass.

Even with all that, there are only 2 in the entire state of PA: https://billypenn.com/2018/04/03/why-pa-only-has-2-pot-growers-to-supply-7000-medical-marijuana-cardholders/

Not saying that we're locked-out, as I personally know a dude that has investments in CA dispensaries (partners are white guys tho), but it's just hard to jump in and try to take advantage of this new market when the cost of entry is so high.

and that's just to get in to pay an application fee of $15k. license fee is $100k + $500k "performance bond" if you get selected

yes, we are largely locked out. a few outliers who make it in doesn't erase that

it's ok to create crazy barriers to exclude ppl from entering a new marketplace, bc ppl may have been excluded from related industries in the past?

Dispensaries aren't necessarily growers

So I don't get the connection to who grew the weed in the past.

There are plenty of wealthy and connected Black folks.....
My take is that it's simply not an industry where the wealthy and connected Black folks want to move into......

But I don't really have my ear to the street on the matter....so there's that.

This just isn't something I think is worth putting the weight of The Movement behind.

it's not impossible tho...

but you have to really want to do it and not just get high one afternoon and think about how cool it would be to own a dispensary.

its intentionally set up that way and been done on various fronts throughout history.

black people are so relieved to be able to smoke/possess it with less legal scrutiny that we miss how it will increase the extraction of black dollars from our community.

The masses are so thoroughly pounded into accepting different flavors of bullshit that we start to lose the ability to imagine what we'd truly want and push for that.
