"Is Logic considered corny?"
Fri Apr-20-18 10:52 AM by double negative

I HATE missing music when it first hits.

I found the Black Spiderman video randomly and was blown away.

I been hearing dudes name for a good second, even seeing kids wearing shirts for a good second, didnt think much about it.

After hearing that song I went and listened to the Everybody album and this shit is good.

Dude is pro black as fuck, can actually rap and has a message. He can be heavy handed but its refreshing to hear him address the fact that he looks white but is biracial.

I get that he kind-of sounds a lot like a mix of Drake and Kendrick.

I guess folks consider him really corny or bad but I'm not getting it.

IT DOES feel like some shit my kid would roll his eyes at me for liking. It does feel like some dad rap, I admit that.

What ya gonna do?

Maybe its just how I grew up. But I distinctly remember my dad liking rap that "had a real message" or "it's positive!".

Its hard to exactly ID but when I hear it I know it when I hear it. J. Cole is on the level at times.

I think its the kind of rap you could play around a preteen and not feel guilty about it

In response to Reply # 0

The only reason Logic is considered corny is because he exists in the white rapper space that has no allegiance to the black center of the culture (although he is very much trying to be a part of it).

People group Logic, G eazy and Russ together because they all circumvented the traditional Hip Hop lane and built a HUGE core of white fans.

There is a feeling that people (black people that like hip hop) dont know him and didnt annoint him therefore he must not be “cool”.

And he speaks to a troubled middle class kid (mostly) which is also not the natural hip hop audience...

G Eazy is on peoples radar now even though he already sold out stadiums because he did a song “you can play in the black clubs”

Logic doesnt have one of those

I get this but its also weird because raps biggest fanbase is white people. I STILL think about the stories of peak N.W.A. and how a good part of their tours were playing for mostly white audiences across the nation

Also interesting because I've counted several times where Logic straight up says "Black is beautiful" - he's giving it up to blackness but hes not on the black radar.

>And he speaks to a troubled middle class kid (mostly) which is

I got into a few songs where he touched upon his upbringing - a dad on drugs and drink and a mom who was so racist she straight up called him nigger.

I see how his expression of pain is different from the norm but its interesting that its not ok to express it in the way he does since its no secret that black people and black rappers can come from a lot of pain...which makes me wonder if (and I'm going out on a branch here) if the pain for black rappers is expressed through material possession/talking about what is owned and held

Its only when you start AND scale with a white audience that is an issue. NWA, PE, Kendrick started in black (hip hop) spaces then scaled

It IS ok (which is why he is so big) but it doesnt feel like he is speaking for "us".

Kendrick performs to a majority white audience as well... but he is speaking to the hood

His early work fascinated me because dude was singing hooks that were simple as hell... but they were also melodic and fun.

and he is Black as fuck so his content is relatable to more of us.

If he didn’t have hooks tho and was just rapport rapping and was lite skint? Prolly would be corny to more people.

As in... what kind of message is considered corny.
I kinda know what you mean, but it gets murky when you look at the 2Chainz Mama video and it's not widely considered "corny" even though it has a "message" so to speak.
Looking at that and going with the "message = corny" idea, one could glean that perhaps suggesting people rise beyond whatever trap or enticement this society lays in front of them is considered corny. Not to knock this generation, but they are weary of articulating their emotions/vulnerabilities, so instead of saying "I don't know how, I'm too weak, it seems impossible, I'm afraid, etc" they say "that's corny." Similar to when you yourself said "It's too much" in regard to not watching Roseann and football. That was slightly more revealing than a 17 year old would've just said "that's corny."

But hey... even thinking this far below the surface is considered 'corny' now, so *shrugs*

lyrics or songs with deep meaning tend to be seen as corny. Plus dude looks white and raps Black.

but a lot of times whats "cool" in hip hop is party songs or drugs and guns

Because cats can literally preach to us about not smoking enough weed, money, cars, guns, women, etc, being hella judgmental about it, and they never get labeled "preachy." It's when you preach about a certain level of morality or restraint that you get the label.

They had him touring clubs, allegedly, in order to get the lame off him. This was part of his artist development.

He's still Cheesy but has the experiences to develop out of where he was.

I always gave his albums a spin when they came out but wasn't a big fan or anything. I don't think the suicide song that made him blow up is corny but when thats all most people know him for I'm not surprised hes getting that label. It's kind of a weird song to be your #1 hit.

Only thing I have ever seen of him talking and getting his life story.

Dude is definitely mad corny by our standards, but I also recognize that he is from an entirely different generation with different standards. I meet young dudes all the time and I am like, "how do yall even get trim?"

But they do . Shits different.

Only ones who aren't "corny" are the hood dudes like Beans and Camron but them niggas ain't a joy to be around.

How in every other area on planet earth if you are an artist/creative being "hard" really aint in the repertoire. At the end of the day no matter how hard the rapper they are pursuing a creative activity so its always been funny to me that being hard is metric to check for with art made by artists who are playing the part. Emphasis "playing the part".

but IMO it seems like most producers were nerdy as shit..

and it's not a bad thing but rap tries so hard to make these dudes the coolest of the cool when in reality a lot of them are super corny.

I wish we didn't have to be so damn cool to be rappers

he raps well enough and has a few songs you might like.
but overall he's a corn ball. and not in the nerdy way that we have a frame of reference for. i saw him on that netflix show and he's low key a cocky dude playing fake humble.

he's on the list of rappers who bypassed the black cosign.
who else is on that list? macklemore, g-eazy?

HIs pushing of his struggles as biracial person are one of them. He's not profilable as everyone else so his struggles are not as legitimate as others. He's pushed this agenda for years now..

He bites off a bunch of people with Kanye as a great example.

His attitude as an upcoming artist is another one. He just had a bad vibe according to some people.

That cheesy suicide song he made after biting Joyner Lucas is another reason.

I mean look at this:

https://s3.amazonaws.com/hiphopdx-production/2018/03/180327-logic-getty-800x600.jpg

I need to see the Family Tree Y-DNA test before he gets a pass to say nigga.

The final reason is he's ducking Joyner Lucas.

Alotta people just say "corny" with zero reason why, which is easily dismissed, but this...

>HIs pushing of his struggles as biracial person are one of
>them. He's not profilable as everyone else so his struggles
>are not as legitimate as others. He's pushed this agenda for
>years now..

I don't know if I'd say it's not "legitimate" per se, but looking white in a system of white supremacy ain't really something I (or most black people) wanna hear presented as a sob story, provided that's what he's really doing. I'll admit I haven't heard much of his music, as something about it just isn't for me and I haven't taken the time to pinpoint what it is.

>I need to see the Family Tree Y-DNA test before he gets a pass
>to say nigga.

I believe it was the interview with Big Boy where he said he doesn't say "nigga" because he's aware that he looks white.

I'm not very familiar with the rest of your reasons, but at least you have some lol.

The street no longer represents the lion share of rap's audience. A guy like Logic could just play up the more 'corny' aspects of himself and still have a sizable base because there are enough fans of rap in general.

Pre-Kanye, a don't think a rapper like Logic could even exist, which is weird because Kanye definitely was black as hell at the start of the career.

In response to Reply # 0

to me he's the corny but dedicated version of someone like Wiz Khalifa

i have a lot of issues with some of the stances taken so far

he didn't bypass the black audience so much as the black audience bypassed him...and then only halfway got in on it

im from the urrea so i remember when i first heard about him from black kids in Mo Co and such and they are just as black as any other black kids but don't get treated like it bc of how classism impacts us as well

he's a mixed kid in a place with mad income parity that looks very white to blacks and suspiciously ethnic to whites...it's been a theme in his music but his earlier stuff is pretty solid

most of his earlier stuff sounds like shit from black artists that wasn't mainstream enough to appeal to us and trended towards backpackeresque true school type of lane

he eventually morphed into that kendrick/drake hybrid shit that he was able to pull off with a 60/40 hit rate but still cracked into main conversations once he had already pretty much jumped the shark...

that being said...he still is pretty decent and is less corny than BEP but in the same vein

Let me sport my Air Hyperbole 2010s in peace. (c) ansomble

There are only 7 or so stadium rappers
Ye
Jay

Cole
Nicki (with a good opener)
Logic

I can't believe you put him on the same plane as BEP! They are the pinnacle of corny. I've been spending a lot of time with 'Everybody' and I found the problack aspects to be really refreshing. That said, the more I dug the more I got turned off by his off mic persona. He kinda has the same thing going as Nas and Kanye where he makes a lot of good social commentary but things are kind of thin because he does not have any formal education. By comparison - Kendrick finished high school and was an A student. Just something I think about.
