"scale modelling...('n other hobbies)"

when I was a kid I got into doing models for a while. I had a friend and we used t o make ww2 planes all the time, his dad used to do it too and he was amazing at it...

before you dismiss this as some wps it might be worth noting they were black.

Anyway I have always been a fan of old pre-cgi special effects and stop frame animation etc.

A few years ago I got back into it a bit and now I have a bunch of stuff that all works in progress and I haven't been at it for about a year give or take a couple months.

Weather has to be decent because you have to work in a well ventilated area.. all that glue and paint will mess you right up otherwise.

although most of the stuff I've got going right now is still ww2, these days I'm kinda more intrigued by the scratch built buildings, scenes and objects.

I'm sure this poast will go straight balsa wood but I don't know maybe somebody here has the slightest interest or curiosity about this stuff.. I'll open it up to hobbies in general... I won't get into making music because it's deeper than a hobby... but what kind of hobbies do you have if any?

I think they're good to have because without them it seems people hit these walls where they just get freakin bored and don't know what to do with time when they have it.

Kinda like dollhouses, but with a focus on engineering and working systems rather than looks. Working plumbing and electric systems. Lights. All wood, stone, clay and other old-school materials (no vinyl, fibreglass or plastic).

As for bridges, when I was a kid I learned how an arch works, so I'd occasionally try to build an arch out of stones (always failed). When I have the time & money, I want some stone cutting tools to be able to build mini arches, bridges, buildings and other structures out of stone and wood. Wood working and a flower shop are my planned retirement jobs.

I dream about owning a real train... there's this small loading yard (basically for loading a few cars at a time) that I go over everyday on my commute... one day maybe I'll get a set and build but man the folks who are into that get real crazy seriously into it I don't know if I could handle that without going too far.

I also love making stone walls and stacking rocks in my garden so I can totally see the appeal of your stonework trip..

and you know on the dollhouse tip it was actually Lester Freamon always making furniture and whatnot on the wire that inspired me to revisit modelling in my adulthood.

Little houses, streets, bridges, trolleys, trains, etc.

If I had mad expendable cash, I'd think about buying a ton of Legos and building everything out of those.

He had this huge board set up where he could lay our the track. We had notebooks full of various track configurations, with different witches, bridges, overpasses, etc. Every other month or so we'd change the layout and run our N scale trains around the track. I'm sure he has a few hobby train magazines from that time (early to mid '80s) stashed somewhere around his house

everything ends up either being blown or a work in progress.. i find finishing things the real challenge.. to be like "ok this is done and I'm happy with it" is always just out of reach.

I am intrigued by scale motors.. i believe you can even get/make working ones.. that's be cool to try.

seen some real cool and creative things along the lines of what your talking.. I used to have a scorpion that was all built out of old circuits and junk.. had blinking led eyes and all.

I was at a furniture store a couple weeks ago and saw two (separate) big-ass yachts in glass cases.

what the fuck do you NEED that for, and why would you WANT it?

What's the chance of YOUR boat (if you have one) looking like the one in a random furniture store in Fullerton, CA.

I could.not.stop clowning.

anyway....

all these things take up space... so you build it and then it's like sure you want to enjoy it some but eventually you end up with all these useless little (or even not so little) models and they collect dust and clutter up space... so it's like you really need to consider what you build and why... because you can't even give these things away most of the time...

then there are some folks who make a living at it... for example Corporations like to have models of their buildings or their heavy machinery for display among other professional markets like museums etc...

I understand some people gotta have a hobby & shit and sometimes it looks cool as a decoration but I thought that was a fad during a certain time or for people who love boats but basically useless furniture decor that people feel for and then you see them for sale a garage sale a few years later, just like napkin rings, how lame are those?

There definitely is a use for those but boats inside jars is basically for visual pleasure. Definitely isn't a use for them besides admiring that someone spent time making it.

I can't think of any small scale models that serve any purpose besides saying "damn, someone spent some time making that"

It takes much more time & focus to put together a model inside of a jar using a pair of tweezers than to simply just put it together on your table. Some folks do things because they like to challenge themselves.

of course I haven't finished it. I got to a point where I was having trouble getting some paint to look right, got frustrated and shelved it. I really should finish it though, there's not even that much more to do.

I have a decent diecast collection and honestly prefer just buying a nice model already made. I definitely see the appeal of doing it yourself but when you can't get the perfection youre after its so frustrating.

I started a scratch build a 1/16 vickers machine gun over a year ago for the 100th anniversary of the battle of Vimy ridge.. I had it so very close to done and then I put it away and here it is the 101th anniversary and this thing is still unfinished.. I need to get on that.

who knows where it goes? I feel like I'm looking for something...the light? I go heavy on chord progressions and beats...I don't know if I wanna be 'famous' or whatever, but I do like UNDERSTANDING music, why I like certain shxt, why certain joints 'HIT' and all that.

I think it's a personal journey...but I would like to be able to feed my fetish for kicks off beats.

we'll see what happens.

closest I got to the model joints was buying those balsa wood planes and flying them on the school playground with my pops.

I usedta fk with those RC joints (Grasshopper/Wild Willie etc) and go to the track to race but you fool around and lose a shock spring back THEN you were assed out...they weren't cheap and hobby stores werent close.

I've long known my scales and chord building, but recently I've moved on from the how to the why, and I'm mad I didn't take theory more seriously earlier. Part of it was playing more piano vs. the bass (my first instruments). Once I moved to chords from only arpeggios I got my brain opened way up.

I haven't had any of the equipment set up for a while but one of the best parts of it to me was getting a kind of inside view into how the music I love is made. I have a much better understanding and appreication of digging, sampling, scratching etc. now.

I'm not trying to make a name for myself.. heck I've got albums and albums and albums of material and I barely even share it let alone plug it... but music to me is more than a hobby.. it's just a pure function of who I am.. I have to make it. life just isn't right if I don't.

that said I need to get back on the theory and study train with it...

In response to Reply # 16

i bought a pocket operator which are nice pocket synths
and now i'm looking at euroracks. Super into generative stuff and been playing with VCVRack and midi generators on iOS

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aN63aiohW7Q

Its fun tho. i have something to help me get the hang of Ableton and stuff like sampling. I bought a Minilab and an iOS usb connector and a recorder so i feel like i'm going to end up going all in. I like keeping it small so if i stop for a while, its not a job to find a place to put it. It can just stay on my desk.

The goal is to just score the stuff i make. not really looking to make a name for myself.

I would ask for them for Xmas, & b-day...and after a while I had enough to make up my own track.

we had a small den back in MI when I was a kid, and I made a course that almost filled the room.

Pops would grab me random cars, and we'd turn the lights out and go at it.

I ran 1/10 scale on road sedan for years before my daughter was born. Still have my race car now. Some of the guys I raced with want be to get into 1/8 scale GT racing, which is a similar touring car style body but based on a 1/8 scale buggy chassis for more durability.

On the fun/bashing side, I still have my 1/8 scale nitro monster truck. Need to work on the brakes though. Having a 12 lb vehicle go out of control at 40mph is only disaster. That said, getting your Bigfoot on over any trail, curb, mud bog, and construction mount is insanely addictive

Hard enough time controlling those at speed

R/C costs money, no matter how you slice it. How much you spend really depends on what you want to do. If you just want to tool around the parking lot or run around the local park, it won't be too bad (but not cheap for a hobby grade vehicle). If you want to do some sort of organized racing? That will cost you. There is a pretty big difference in the two

really enjoyed model rocketry when I was a kid... first one was the x-15, a preassembled plastic one. I built a few more from kits but I was never good and really just wanted to blast them off. Eventually the leftover rocket engines were put to use launching toys over ramps. Good times.

saved up lawn mowing money when I was 13 to buy The Hornet, a classic RC kit car. Can't believe you can still buy it... https://www.amazon.com/Tamiya-TMYTAM58336-The-Hornet-Model/dp/B000FG86VO

I wasn't technical enough to get everything tweaked for it to run really well but had fun with it for a few summers there.

These days... outside of music, it's mostly gardening and this niche sport (paddle/platform tennis). And comics, which interestingly I didn't read at all as a kid.

Often with some upgraded parts, as we've come a bit farther than fiberglass chassis, friction shocks, brass bushings and mechanical speed controls.

If you have some of the original Hornet, Wild Willy or Lunchbox kits you could make a decent amount of money for collectors. But I like to see them in action rather than being shelf queens

your either into something or your not.. sports are good.. music is fantastic you don't really need more... I don't know I have a somewhat obsessive personality so when I get into something I get right into it for a minute... somethings I put down and never pick up again others I keep coming back to.

Been a minute since I did some but when my local comic and hobby store stepped their game up in stocking some I went nuts for a bit. Was fun making some of them look weathered and beaten down. Looking at this post I'm going to have to fight the urge to stop on the way home and pick up another one.

Now its mostly paint a miniature RPG figure if someone request it. Waiting on some unpainted Starfinder figures to release and I'll do a few since I have some ideas on color schemes.

well...like. We’re working on finding what theyre interested in.

The oldest boy is a real hyper, smart kid. Gets bored quick tho. The other day, in a span of15 minutes he rode is bike, rode his scooter and then played with his remote controlled car. He came back in the house, “I’m bored”

The younger boy is real dreamy and sensitive. Likes to draw and listens to people.

as for me...

funny. Because I’m working on the content for our website and I’m not sure how to say ... what I want to say. In essence, interior design has always been a passion but, I didn’t take hold of it until I left a bad relationship. lol. Of course I don’t wanna say that lol
