Bout two weeks ago some black sex worker got killed in Orange County. It wasn't even off BP, it was one of the more low key joints where you gotta make a profile and send private messages and such. That site is still up as of now.

This limits sex workers ability to "screen" clients (which is usually making sure said client isn't a black man lol)

control her sex work career more. A bigger market without the need for pimps and scurrying in back alleys.

A safer alternative would be a blockchain like network where the sex workers get to rate the johns.

Takes longer to build a following, it's not a wide open marketplace like BP, no anonymity, and Ig already shuts down profiles that are blantantly promoting prostitution.

You could be some single mother hard up on rent, post up on BP, cash out and never post again. Can't do that on IG without exposing yourself

one on hand Backpage removed one element of danger by having sex workers advertise online instead of being out on the strip.

However....whether people like it or not......prositution is illegal (Vegas has that gray area but still). Prostitution does go hand in hand with sex trafficking (not all of those women on Backpage are from here). Backpage was also a part of the problem.

Like someone else said, sex work can and should be legalized. But in order to do that, the elephant in the room has to be fully addressed--sex trafficking. Measures have to be taken to ensure that these women are in safe environments engaging in their activities safely. Backpage would never have vetted those ads to make sure they weren't aiding in the exploitation of sex trafficking victims because their policy was basically to turn a blind eye.

the problem is thst since its underground and illegal you invite black market elements to fill in the vacuum, a la the drug game, anything goes including forcing people into it.

Make it legal and most importantly regulate it, much of that goes away. Not going to be like it would make it non-existent but getting women off street corners and shithole hotels would go a long way. And I figure as a john when your choices are basically a decent legal set up a la a ranch where its in their best interest to make sure its all legit and safe for all parties vs Gunplay pimping out of a 29 dollar a night motel...

but it will ultimately make it harder + easier to catch.

Why as a pussy purchaser (lol) would you risk going through X amount of hoops when you can just simply have a risk free transaction. Can’t legislate morality but you can rely on laziness and self-preservation. As a sex worker protection from the state vs going it on ya own underground is a no brainer.

Right now everyone is forced to effectively go through the same system: frat bros who want a really crazy bachelor party vs pedophiles. You give the legit sex work a safe space to be, you can focus on all under the grid stuff .

The ones that stick around will legitimize their business (provide a venue, security, permits & taxes, etc). The rest will have no choice.

and I believe a lot of sex workers are underage, runaways or foreigners who are shipped into the country.

I don’t see that stopping.

A lot of barriers would have to be put in place to box out traffickers. I don't think anyone would step up to help the victims because they don't matter enough to the people in power.

I would think backpage was a small (I don't know its reach) representation of what was happening already. just another way to advertise, but not a place that was actually helping sex workers.

maybe it was helpful for the cops to help find people, but who knows.

Y'all buy those labels, I was born supreme

In response to Reply # 0

Seems like it's a small portion of a huge black market industry, and I doubt folks were advertising children or hostages on backpage. Same with craigslist.

I agree with kayru99, and think this is more about grabbing low-hanging, ugly-looking fruit that not too many will complain about publicly as part of a broader plan to further regulate the Internet.

A report released by a U.S. Senate subcommittee in early 2017 stated that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's data indicates that 73 percent of the child-trafficking reports it receives were related to Backpage.com.

Site executives say they are protected by the Communications Decency Act which regulates pornographic material on the internet. Executives argue that the law states internet publishers cannot be held liable for content created by third parties.

But investigators say the site lost that protection when they alerted posters to key terms related to child sex trafficking. Investigators found proof of these alerts in internal Backpage.com documents.

The site even gave the third party posters a chance to rephrase their ads so they wouldn't be flagged for child sex trafficking. Some of the terms Backpage.com admins told posters not to use include "Lolita," young, teenager and even "Amber Alert."

at best it might cut single digit % of it

legal weed is getting taxed out the ass and the people that are propping up the underage or the exploited aren't looking for legal sex...the people propping up that dark part of the market typically do so bc that's the market they want

they aren't hitting up the chick at the best western...they are typically specifically looking for the underaged, the exploit fetish, and so on

no law has ever completely eradicated the thing it was designed to prevent. so we shouldn't discuss things from a zero sum perspective

>at best it might cut single digit % of it

and that saves lives. period. so its valid

>legal weed is getting taxed out the ass

which is why it should have been decriminalized first.

bing and yahoo are still viable search engines but there are tons that are obscure that get the job done

same thing with this

it was craigslist, backpage, and on to the next as black market shit becomes too easily visible and accessible

I can see how legalizing it would make it safer for women who would be in the system or registered.

However, I don't think it would curb human trafficking nor do I see how closing Backpage makes it less safe. From the sound of it BP wasn't all that safe to begin with.
