My wife sent me these fools a month ago talking about let's plan to do this.
So I did some research into HOW. And nothing they've said passes the smell test.
Not only is it highly improbable but they don't list any specific plans.

....and didn't even have full time jobs yet! We just work hard and save our money..."

Yeah...you save YOUR money and spend your FAMILY's money..aka..Mommy & Daddy's money...

SHit really irks me...
I mean...i'm happy for them...but i'm hating on the false representation...

We got some neighbors like that...
matter fact...i'm vent right here...

So yeah...we renovated our house about 2 years ago
After living in the same 2 bed 1 bath under 1,000 sf. cape cod for nearly 10 years....and then we had our 1st kid and another on the way we knew we didn't want to leave Arlington so we decided to move forward with the renovations I'd been designing (just for fun) for the past few years.... We did a modest reno but it nearly doubled our square footage...we were cool, happy..ARE cool ARE happy... But our bank account/s are on struggle mode lol... but meeds are being met so I can't complain..we're fortunate...but we WORK for it...

Meanwhile, younger couple that we kick it with and that has a daughter same age as our oldest all of a sudden decided THEIR house didn't meet their needs anymore and started looking into renovations on their 2-story nearly 2,000 sf. home. Ultimately decided they couldn't modify their house to their liking so the just up and bought a different house at the other end of the block! ..... TO RENOVATE THAT HOUSE....

Anyways...that's what "they" did.....
Talking all this noise about they were just going to scrape for a little while and live frugally yada yada yada..... Wife didn't work at the time...so it was already suspect....

One day wife was chatting with them and they just casually mentioned that their mom had some "inheritance" just sitting on ice that she couldn't figure out how to use so she'd be happy to GIVE it to them....

SMH...

Fast forward to them moving in.....needing new furniture....

Guess who footed the bill for that??...zactly...

Meanwhile..they be always casually talking about how it's rough living frugally...but STAY getting new shit, throwing little dinners, going on vacations....

I don't even like chilling with them anymore over that mess.... I know it's petty...and a tinge of jealousy...but whatever.... all that false representation is annoying... I'd much rather folks be straight and keep it real....

That behavior is harmless in the micro, but nefarious as shit in the macro. Motherfuckers got ALL the money and wanna act like they in the same boat as people living check to check. It's the reason income inequality is getting worse and worse. White folk so greedy they want the stuff and the struggle. Nope, yo black ass can't even have the joy of overcoming oppression, we oppressed too.

isn't problematic at all. i'm trying to wrap my head around how i'd socially negotiate that and i'm kind of at a loss other than to be real to the point that they'd get so self-aware of trying to repeat stories that make them feel better about themselves that they'd just stop. haha.

Let's say they both have jobs that pay $70,000 (not too crazy of an assumption I don't think).
Combined income is $140,000. After taxes (35%), take home pay is $91,000.
That is $7583 per month.
Subtract $4500 for debt leaves them $3083.

They live in Minnesota, so housing shouldn't be too pricey. Let's say $1500 for housing expenses. That leaves them about $1500 a month for food and other stuff. Plenty to live on in my opinion

Is that too hard to believe? If they really crunched, they could do it much faster.

now I know America loves buying shit so I get the message but I get furious when I see 150K paid off in 35 months.

Then I read the story and so and so has a blog making 10K a month and also works on Wall St.

That's not normal.

Having aspirational goals is excellent. But goals need to be based on reality and America loves selling a distorted version of reality like it's real.
America loves to sell pyramid schemes, get rich quick plans, and behavioral aspirations.
Because if collectively we took a look at predatory capitalism and racial inequality all this shit would fall apart

and my wife is all about him right and said she is ignoring my frustration with him. Apparently she quoted that I said not to listen to him. What I said is don't get too wrapped up in the callers saying "I make 9K a month, have 300K saved.. can I afford this TV?"

definitely want to snowball aka pay off CC debts until we are in the clear but first we have to pay mortgage, car payments, daycare, insurance, household expenses...

ain't no 4500 left over after that.

some people will hustle to stack money

these are the people who will hustle, come up on an extra 8k, 12k, 30k and have ZERO issue dropping that right on top of the debt.

In response to Reply # 11

but I feel like these stories are a hustle half the time.

Most of these folks just have good ass jobs and took a year or 2 to commit it all to debt.

and I can't knock it.

The wife and I are trying to make 120K between the 2 of us. Hell, that's what we should be making and hopefully by the end of this year we will hit it.

The plan is to live off one salary and use the other to pay down debt and stack paper.

but I won't be on FB telling folks how they can do it too.

Kinda how one of the best ways to make money in the drop shipping area is to produce content about making money in the drop shipping game.

31. "These stories are like those "UPS driver makes it to NFL" stories"
In response to Reply # 0

It's not like UPS driver was some average sized person... he's 6'6", 300, and was a 4 year starter in Division II.

Most of the people in these "frugality" stories are solidly middle class (if not upper middle), on their own, so they're probably making well over median household income together.

From that level of income, there's alot of options as to where you can be frugal and still enjoy life. I mean, homes can be found for less than $1000/month. If your household income is high enough that you could afford $2500/month, then you've got ALOT of wiggle room to design your finances in a way that doesn't leave you living paycheck to paycheck.

Some of the hardship of making those choices is just prioritizing saving over enjoying your money... the <$1000/month rent may be in a bad school district but you don't necessarily have to pay $2500/month to get into the good one. Maybe $1500 gets you in there, but in an older TH w/o the yard you really wanted.

It certainly takes alot of discipline to make that choice when you'd just get by at $2500 like everyone else at your income level ... but it's still alot easier than trying to stretch things when you're at the bottom of the income scale.

When we have a major expense we hustle to find ways to pay it but we need to hustle to find ways to pay down debt. Sometimes it’s hard to pay down debt because it feels better to buy something or eat out at a fancy restaurant.

We really want to get to a place where all we have to pay for is mortgage and household bills.

Can’t wait to pay off these damn cars. That’s probably our biggest money bleeder besides daycare.

or the discipline will be unsustainable.

I think the key to being able to hit those longer range goals is finding ways to compromise without ruining quality of life in the meantime.

I'm kind of struggling with it right now. I got a big debt that I could probably pay off in a year or two if I just focused on paying it down... but I've spent the last 3-4 years saving up to have a wedding, buy a house and keep some money in savings.

I used to have cheap little sports car that I'd take to autocrosses and track events, but even that slowed down in the last couple years so I recently sold it to hit my savings goal.

I may have gone too far because that was my little escape. Now I'm caught between focusing on the debt or finding another toy before I focus on the debt.

Move to a college town and work at a job with a high salary that allows you to remote in. Say you make 100 to 120K a year per person. Rent you a 500 sq foot apartment, don't drive, buy food in bulk, and teach part time at a community college so all financial aid payments pay down the principle. It's quite easy but...

Fuck that because I'm petty and want to stick it to the baby boomers. Enjoy my contribution to the erosion of your safety net you greedy fucks. Student loan debt is cited as a reason to get rid of baby boomer's social safety net.

You right these stories piss me off because they messing it up for everyone else.

I’m not impressed if you pay off debt fast as fuck. That’s EASY to do.

How many people make 120K a year tho? How many couples make 120K a year

I’m more impressed by the person making 40K a year who can pay down debt.

barely staying afloat after paying the car, student loans, CC's, day care, dog bills, food, house shit that breaks, hospital bills, etc.

salary has gone way up since then, but I'm just now getting ahead and hoping no one has to go to the doctor for anything real and the house/cars don't break.

I know these folks and have seen them put in the work. It's actually pretty inspiring and I'm actually about to work on it myself.

If you read the article below, it's a lot of hard work, requires sacrifice and time. No quick and easy fix....but it's doable.

https://jasondoesstuff.com/debt-free/

sidenote: they don't have kids and both are entrepreneurs so the amount of income they bring in is directly dependent on them.

the key to happiness is not being rich;
it's doing something arduous and
creating something of value and then
being able to reflect on the fruits of your labor

Here’s the thing; American’s absolutely do need to save more money…we are towards the bottom as far as the Western world is concerned when it comes to savings and unlike our European friends the social nets in place in the US will kill you before they help you so the message on its own is a great one.

But lets not get it twisted; like in all things America finds a way to make money off the poison and to make money off the cure.

I remember the economic rags pissing their pants where after the 2008 crash during recovery consumer debt and spending started dropping because large swaths of the American economy are built on it(credit cards, obscene college costs, home and car ownership, etc.)

But then It’s irksome where at the same time they sell you these miracle cures with no basis in reality. There was one that went around a few weeks ago on this young couple that ‘retired’ to a farm upstate New York …when I read it and saw in the second paragraph she was putting hundreds of dollars a month into her personal a brokerage account, OUTSIDE OF THE THE SAVINGS THEY WERE BRAGGING ABOUT, I knew what kind of scrappy poor kids I was dealing with (via the Wall Street Journal’s serious piece on how American’s are suffering under unfair tax burdens)

https://i.imgur.com/bdgZa.jpg

(what’s great about the cartoon is that neither the cartoonist nor the writer of the original piece probably make even half of the poorest example)

It’s just remixed bootstraps with a dash of fad diet. “They did it, why can’t you?”. You’ve got webpages dedicated to it, books dedicated to it (Rich Dad, Poor Dad is the devil), etc. It also fits perfectly in the super Christian ‘Hard work and Jesus!’ will get you there lie of the American dream.

It’s why when I read articles on slowing down home ownership and the slant is millenials are simply chosing not to buy/like having roommates/love hanging with their parents as opposed to being locked out of the market.

Or how those same scrappy millenials love the share economy where the reality is future generations have to have multiple side hustles to make ends meet (when the previous generation could do it on one fulltime job)

Basically, ALWAYS SAVE. But don’t fall for the okey doke.
