"sorry smokers, no smoking in bars is the best thing ever"

I remember the first time we experienced it in NYC. We were there visiting my sister for the Christmas holidays and folks kept leaving the bar and coming back in and we were so confused...

then I looked around to try and observe the atmosphere and realized. No smoke! No smoke!

What the fuck? Where is the smoke?

Best christmas gift ever

Then last year we went to Pittsburgh and got cancer at the bar.

Savages!!!

DC went smoke free in 2006. The worst was getting random burn holes in your clothes because somebody was being careless with their cigarette.

like a gotdamn chimney. Every time we left a room she followed us with a cigarette. One of those big 3 story houses too... and everyone in Pittsburgh still smokes like it’s the 70’s.

My cousins from DC left to go see some family on the other side of town and we hiked that at least they can get out the smoke and they were like “nope, our aunt smokes hella cigarettes too”

The Pittsburgh region thinks the water and soil run off from the mills is increasing the cancer rate but IMO it’s just parents smoking around their kids.

I occasionally smoke a loosie or three every now and then. Never indoors though,
I feel like that's invading other people's private space. Plus it's not a good look trying
to pick up non-smoking Women when you smell like an ashtray. Also the likelihood
that someone will start a fire in the club/bar has gone way down with smoking bans

I never understood smoking indoors or smoking in the car with the windows rolled up,
like even when smoking was considered cool. It's not like you're going to get an extra
nicotine buzz by hot boxing a cig. Marijuana on the other hand is different
conversation.

There are a few bars / social clubs in Philly that allow cannabis consumption in private
rooms.
I'll take that all day everyday over sitting in the club with cigarette smoke. Good company,
usually good cannabis, good people, and good food. I'd like to see this become more
of thing like coffee houses in Amsterdam.

Come, I'll tear up all my poems
for just a little piece
of you...

And you are allowed to have smoking sections as long as they have a separate ventilation system. I know some bars that would have like a 10x10 no smoking area and the rest of the bar smoking, another has an entire upstairs smoking bar. Smy buddies pool hall has a small ass smoking room that is the worst if there are a lot of people in it. I smoke and I can’t stand smoking bars anymore.

I remember when they had ash trays in the arm rest but can’t say I remember anyone smoking.

Then again, back in the day it was so common, maybe. First time I rode a greyhound bus was 91.

...on Alitalia on a flight to Rome. I still have nightmares.

I also did three years of high school in Switzerland and part of my daily journey to school was on a train. I made the mistake of sitting in the smoking car once. I think I got lung cancer in the ten minutes that I was in there.

a friend of mine developed throat cancer, and she's pretty sure it came from years of working in a smoke-filled bar.

I did it once a week for 4 years, and I can't describe how awful it was. Clothes, hair, everything you own smelled like smoke for three days. It sucked.

People in NYC just thought it would ruin the vibe of bars. Now I am sure no one would even think of going back.

I will say, from a public policy perspective, now that the norm has been so totally shifted to not having smoke in bars and restaurants, I believe it would be okay for cities to going back to allowing smoking in their bars if they want to. Few would probably make the switch back (though I still would have a concern for workers in such bars).

But I actually really enjoy the camaraderie of a group of people saying, "Hey, wanna step outside?" It's a good way of kickstarting a side conversation, or clearing up some shit that doesn't concern everyone else around you. On the flip side, you can meet some of the most interesting characters at the bar on those trips outside, particularly on a busy night.

Also, there's something to be said about being friends with enough people at the bar on a specific enough night that, once the lights dim, the windows get blacked out and the doors locked, the ashtrays and the cigs come out and it's you and a bunch of employees of the place having it all to yourself while six or seven stragglers smoke their cigarettes outside in the cold waiting for their Lyfts.

Where regulars could smoke. And after last call ashtrays came out and we would play dice until all hours of the morning.

this has been in affect in California since 98 or 99. When I go to Vegas I try and sit at smoke free tables and I still have a huge headache by the end of the day. Smoking and non smoking sections in restaurants are just a distant memory for me now.
