"Filming has begun for BET’s The Bobby Brown Story!"
Wed Mar-14-18 05:08 PM by BlakStaar

I follow a couple cast members from The New Edition story on Instagram (e.g. Luke James) and they’ve been showing behind-the-scenes footage of The Bobby Brown Story production.

The NE series brought me (and continues to bring me) so much joy so I am amped about this. I remember the announcement from last year but I forgot, to be honest.

Did a quick news search and realized there’s been recent coverage about production:

They selected the actress who will play Whitney Houston: http://deadline.com/2018/03/the-bobby-brown-story-whitney-houston-gabrielle-dennis-bet-1202326725/

General news about filming in Atlanta:
http://radiotvtalk.blog.ajc.com/2018/02/24/bet-starts-production-of-the-bobby-brown-story-biopic-in-atlanta/

Same writer and executive producer of The NE Story are still involved but a Spike Lee protege will direct instead of Chris Robinson.

Final thought: I hope Bobby’s marriage with Whitney doesn’t overpower the story line AND I hope the two-part series gives more insight into what led up to his dismissal in 1985. Bivins said during promo interviews last year that a lot of shit was left out (Duh, I know).

And I’d like to know more about Bobby as an artist. A scene with him and Teddy Riley coming up with “My Perrogative” would be KILLER!

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt8101768/fullcredits/cast?ref_=m_tt_cl_sc

Noted characters we didn’t see before:
- Teddy Riley
- Babyface
- Keith Sweat (Hmmm...interesting. Did Keith and Bobby get along back then? They both used Teddy as a producer)

This list is not as complete as it should be. Luke James, who played Johnny, was on set but is not listed. Hopefully we’ll see him and all the other original teenage/grown up NE actors. I don’t want to see no stranger dudes and b*tches as replacements.

Seeing Keith made me remember NE’s beef with Guy and the murder that followed.

Wonder if they’ll cover that? Like, shave off five minutes of the 90 minutes they might spend on Whitney drama, and show us that.

But ONLINE BLK PEOPLE CONSENSUS is that unrequested bootleg tv biopics indirectly led to Bobbi Kristina death

instead of a scene with Bobby and teddy Riley, just do a movie on teddy Riley/guy

That’s a stretch. BET only made one biopic, and that biopic was the NE joint, which was not cheaply produced or poorly written. Now TV One and Lifetime, on the other hand, whew. The Whitney movie...mediocre. The Aaliyah movie....goodness gracious. Couldn’t even finish it. II didn’t see the Miki Howard or Bobbi Kristina biopics on TV One. A Debarge biopic is in the works and I will be watching that, even if the production quality is boo-boo.

Teddy is a legend but is he deserving of a biopic?

Too many artists (and their fans) think their life story is worthy of the time, energy and money to produce a biopic. And even if it is, they want it too soon.

I mad Xscape are discussing a biopic.

Can we get an En Vogue biopic first?

Shit.

What do people want to see in a Bobby Brown movie?

What moments in time need to be captured?

Last year, I read his autobiography, Every Little Step. I think they need to show how reckless and rich he was when he was at the top of his game. In the book, he said he bought a car off a dude for an insane amount of money and then left it on the side of the road, or at the airport like it was a rental, or something crazy like that.

Also, all the things that happened after his dismissal in 1985. What did his friends back home say to him?

One thing that was missing from the NE series was a look into the home life of a child star that’s broke. You going to school and you don’t have money for lunch. And kids, after seeing your azz on Soul Train, looking at you like, “why do you still live in the projects?”

Must have been tough.

Those purchases at the peak of his fame were wild. Apparently he bought a helicopter on a whim because he saw one outside of his hotel room too. There's got to be dozens of stories that aren't out there that would be fun, interesting, and give some insight into Bobby's life an development. But just spit balling, things that I would enjoy seeing/enjoy seeing fleshed out include:

The James Brown concert his mother took him to when he was damn near a toddler.

They have to put James Flint getting stabbed to death and dying in Bobby's arms when he was 12 in there.

Trying to scheme a way to steal Mr. T's chains while filming DC Cab

Trying to get him to sing "Just Got Paid" for Don't Be Cruel and Bobby passing on it

Suge Knight

Janet Jackson, Madonna, taking Whitney from Eddie Murphy

Carl Anthony Payne raising Bobby's son.

What happened to the follow-up album that had "Tap Into My Heart" and "From The Outside" on there that never dropped

Steven Sealey getting shot in Bobby's passenger seat

Bobby blowing off Usher

I really wish Ralph would speak up.

He has/had a radio show called "Inside the Ride" that debuted last year on WZBR 1410AM (Boston).

I wonder if contractual obligations contributed to his absence.

He appeared to be separated or in the process of divorcing from his wife last year--not that his personal life has anything to do with him not going on tour.

I wonder what his financial situation is looking like...

If I'm feeling super bored later this week, I might hit up the Wild, Wild West that is Lipstick Alley for some "tea."

Funny you mentioned that. Here’s a video of Fatima schooling Woody (Bobby Brown actor) on his grind game. They were rehearsing, and it’s pretty entertaining: https://youtu.be/dSWL_8oSFg0

About a month ago, at the NABJ convention in Detroit, I attended a "sneak peak" where Bobby Brown and Woody McClain appeared.

It was cool to see Bobby in the flesh, acting like, well, Bobby, but the "sneak peak" didn't reveal as much as I had hoped. We watched a short scene with Ralph and Bobby in the studio talking about New Jack Swing. I hope they explore this more because I know Ralph wanted to do a solo NJS album around this time and Bobby beat him to it.

And we see what happened once Ralph finally came out with a solo album. I always feel bad about how his solo career panned out. ;-(

'cause I was tired. I will have to rewatch the whole series later on.

Overall, I don't think I will enjoy this miniseries as much as the New Edition Story, which I have watched so many times it's embarrassing. As I said before, I have very little interest in the Bobby-and Whitney storyline because of how much it's been covered in the media over the last 25 years...

Quick thoughts:
- I thought it was dope how they played, "The Show," to demonstrate Bobby's interest in Teddy Riley's production ("Rough but smooth"). I keep forgetting that is one of Teddy's early, early productions.
- Speaking of Teddy, was he really still living the St. Nick projects during that time? It would not be super shocking; just interesting.
- The recreation of the "Girlfriend" video caught me off guard. That was a cute and corny little video.

Yeah, it was not as good as the NES. You could tell Bobby and Alicia had a heavy hand in the production.

According to Black Twitter, the Whitney actor performed those twitches and mannerisms to a T.

The little boy dancing at the end was Bobby’s real-life son, Cassius.
