"THE GRAPEVINE | IS BRUNO MARS A CULTURAL APPROPRIATOR?"

Not sure if you guys watch the show but this was a decent episode:

https://youtu.be/SUxtzhplZtI

A lot of good points made in relation to Bruno being recognised for music that would never gain the same recognition if made by a black artist. The panelists also opined on other very valid grievances in relation to the appropriation of black culture for the benefit of none black individuals

That said, I agree 100% with the panelist the said, and i paraphrase "black people need to stop seeking equality and acceptance in somebody else's house".

More focus must be placed on cherishing our own institutions. The strategy where we shame white people into doing right by black people doesn't work

in a sense it feels counter productive to keep harping on this one

I'm getting tired of the "IF a black artist did this....then X" argument
because its leaving out a key distinction...its about position and influence. Bruno gets a pass because he just writes the shit out of pop music. Its not as if he was some unknown dude who just dropped a bunch of throwback music.

Further, I kinda have a hair up my ass about this because its not like there are not black artists who are doing the throw back thing or making different sounds an getting respect for it.

Sharon Jones AND Charles Bradley were on the throwback sound for fucking ever. Actually, I've been to several Daptone shows in the past and you know who mostly made up the audience? Exactly.

I think people are in their feeling because black artists never seem to get the same amount of respect and recognition and thats not necessarily to take away from the white artists (in some cases they are super talented)

I mean, I get the overall idea

But its not like Bruno is sub par or half ass and hes just getting props for not looking black. He is legit and has penned a ton of stuff.

When I think of appropriation in the musical space I think of folks like Macklemore or Kreashawn.

Further, I am not denying the presence of racism, its in the air and water, bricks and foundation - but I don't think it's the absolute issue in this case. Its a very complex argument.

I agree.

In any case, in my view we need to stop seeking validation from outside influences and focus on our own. I know that's a tough stance to take when the major paper comes from going mainstream but we need to take a zen like approach to these endeavours, acknowledge the glass ceiling and seek a means to gaining more control (economically)

Daly City dimes galore

In Vegas for my boy's bachelor party, a stripper used "let's do it again" as her music and even today I can't disassociate the memory lol.

Outside of the colorism argument, what's the difference between 24K and Awaken...My Love?

Both are derivative but one has been appointed as "acceptable" and one is STILL being critiqued.

lets get something straight Bruno was on Motown back in 04 and they dropped. and Bruno was told that if he wanted to write and Produce on a White and Blue eyed artist than by all means however a record executive told him he didn't stand a chance.

bottom line he has shown versatility not only as a Live performer however also more importantly as a Songwriter.

not many acts can channel Billy Joel to Michael Jackson and yet be modern with it.

lets be real he brings on stage. he ain't no culture bandit because he always been like this his whole career. now Timberfake that is another situation.

...because a great majority of what is considered Latino culture is actually Afro-Latino culture being co-opted/appropriated.
(yet originating with the Africans imported into Latin America(c)Conga drumming/Clave/Salsa/Rumba/Son/Afro-Cuban Jazz/Bomba&Plena/Merengue/Tango/Milonga/Samba/Capoeira/Candomble/Santeria/Cumbia..etc...etc
(when people say "Latin rhythms" or "Latin percussion/dance" they're specifically talking about African rhythms/dance/percussion that was *imported into Latin America).

-Note-
*Peep the appropriation-implications if one isn't hip to the Totemic-Nomenclature Format(described below).

For a quick primer, "Afro-Latino" as a term is identical to "African-American" and/or "Afro-American" regarding what it denotes: both terms specifically referring to Africans that were imported into the noted region.
"Afro" being the totemic *gene-pool marker and "American/Latino" being the *colonial marker designating specifically where this particular group of Africans was geographically-displaced during the trans-atlantic slave-trade.

So ta breakz it down into babysteps:

Afro-American(African/Black person of the States)
Afro-Latino(African/Black person of Latin America)

Understanding this totemic format allows one to have a more surgical understanding of the diasporic Pan-African experience both culturally, politically, and genealogically.

So from ^that, we get:

Afro-Cuban(Africans imported into Cuba)
Afro-Rican(Africans imported into Puerto Rico)
Afro-Dominican, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Columbian, Afro-Argentinian..etc..etc..

All ^^^dis shit being said/explained,
Latin America is culturally far more African/Black than North America is because the Spanish colonialists allowed more cultural-Africanisms to manifest than the British colonialists did in the North(refer to how British colonialists didn't allow African percussion in the States and compare that with how the Spanish DID allow African percussion/religion/dance/culinary traditions in Latin America). This is why you can still find groups of Afro-Latinos that speak their native indigenous African languages(c)Yoruba Africans of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Brazil..etc..

This is why Afro-American's general ignorance of Afro-Latino culture is so stifling and counter-intuitive. When Charlamagne didn't know what Afro-Latino meant on the BFC when they interviewed Amara La Negra, I had the hugest *facepalm in life, ...and dat shit was LIVE ON AIR!

It was pretty much understood in Philly Ricans and Dominicans waa just Black folk who spoke Spanish for the most part.

The part that gets things twisted is white puerto Ricans and the concept of hispanic being a race and some time BLACK ass Ricans acting like they other because they speak Spanish.

Yep, again. It'd be the equivalent of me, an African, saying I'm English simply because I *speak english language....NOPE! Da game don't go like dat!

There's a small-yet-growing contingent of uninformed people that think the terms, "latino" and "hispanic" are racial when they are NOT. The inception of both respective terms can be attributed to politically-lazy Anglo-American census representatives that had niether the diligence nor care to make an honest appraisal of Latin America's multi-ethnic composition. But naturally, that is to be expected of the colonial European.

Even funnier when considering that it is essentially the same multi-ethnic composition found in the states:

-Afro
-Euro
-Indigenous/Native
-Asiatic

Hell, even Puerto Rico's national music(Bomba & Plena) is African, deriving from Puerto Rico's *Yoruba African population.

Given context, this is why Bruno gets a pass as I noted above.

He's Black, again poly-ethnic, but Black: He does, in fact have African blood coursing in his vains so no, he ain't appropriating Black culture, he's moving where his *blood takes him.

I initially thought he was from Hawaii, then i heard one of his parents was Puerto Rican. Not being from the US it wasn't clear to me if all Puerto Ricans are of African descent or just a sub set.

Either way, I feel its difficult to effectively accuse individuals of cultural appropriation because we all ultimately take inspiration from other cultures and previous generations.

That said, I see how the system may allow one group of people to exploit and profit off another's culture yet prevents originators from doing the same - I get that argument.

He's black and paying homage so the answer is no. Go raid the 80's and pay homage to the people that inspired you like your favorite artist. Paying homage is a trend that needs to continue this year.

They don't pay homage or respect to originators of their art.

Bruno Mars is making his version of the music he loved to hear growing up.
