"Bulletproof shelters in classrooms"

It’s a shame it has come to this but it’s actually the best solution.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/video/elementary-school-installs-bulletproof-shelters-inside-classrooms-53409282

A friend of mine is a teacher and said they had a drill yesterday and he felt helpless. Actually said guns may not be a bad idea. When another friend disagreed he responded. “You weren’t the one hiding under a fucking desk during a mass shooting drill”

These shelters tho... they seem like the best options right now.

This seems like the way that a country completely beholden to capitalism works. I imagine the stock price of the manufactures have been slowly ticking up at this proposal.

Yet they've managed to purchase 8(?) of these in 5 years

To put in perspective, my highschool had over 3,000 people 17 years ago, and has grown since then. It was not the largest in the district, city, or state by a longshot

In response to Reply # 7

Not talking about criminalizing the act (the act is already criminal)
Nor discussing what the proper punishment should be
I'm talking about regulating the capabilities, manufacturing, and sale of guns via regulations
Yes, the Atlas Shrugged types have made tremendous gains since 1979, but a country without healthy regulations for public safety is not a country

I guess the kids will start to ignore it eventually, but they know what it is. And I think its presence hurts the learning environment.

Kids shouldn't be preoccupied with the thought that they might have to run into the murder shelter at any moment.

It's a dangerous world. You can't take precautions for everything. School shootings, while publicized loudly, don't happen frequently enough to justify messing with the learning environment like this, in my opinion.

It kills me that all the discussion about guns is always focused on these relatively rare mass shooting events. And all the "solutions" are tailored to those events. We get reactionary shit like this and armed teachers and bump stock bans.

It's the non publicized stuff that is the real problem though. The thousands of shooting deaths that occur each year. That deserves the most consideration, but it's not sensational enough to warrant solutions

I would much rather hide in a bulletproof shelter than huddle in a corner or under a desk.

While the numbers don’t add up I think it’s weird how folks in here say it rarely happens..

Yet when the next school shooting happens those same folk are the first ones to say they weren’t surprised.

The reality is guns aren’t going away.

i know 3 year olds who are counting exits.

i'm not convinced this isn't just creating more shooters, and some of them are just sitting in these drills imagining how they could circumvent security measures.

as a society we're feeding into the arms race by acting like the only solution is to buy in to the military-industrial complex (and shoot first).

That way you're the only one who will harm your kid. (Or they will harm you.)

It's what the NRA and the Republicans want - goober gun fuckers "teaching" their kids from the Bible and NRA comic books.

...cops. Dudes with training, equipment and experience. Someone that already knows how to use a firearm, and can read the students' body language to try and spot threats. People that risk their lives every day to keep us safe.

Also, if there was some sort of reporting and warning system in place that could alert the authorities to possible threats against a school well ahead of time.

Do people not realize how fucked up this is? Bulletproof shelters in a classroom? You know, the place where your kids are learning english and math, and then right next to them there's a bulletproof hiding place. That's so fucked. Here's where we keep the art supplies, over here's where we sharpen our pencils, and over here is where we hide in case someone wants to murder us.

Let’s be real, how many of us are shocked and surprised when we hear about a school shooting?

Even when the numbers go up... it doesn’t really hit home. Shit doesn’t even seem real.

We got folks claiming people are crisis actors and shit. Some folks don’t even believe this is real.

pay 40k a classroom for something that is unlikely to ever happen and won't save you if it does.

>These shelters tho... they seem like the best options right
>now.

If you have to spend 40K per room to ensure that your kids aren't killed by a terrorist then you're living wrong.

It would cost around $105,000 to secure a school with 25 rooms. That's just one school...

Regulate guns, terrrorist fffff, and save government money.

we're talking about a nexus of government/school/security/military funding. that's a perfect storm for graft.

costs don't come down for shit like this. the money will get thrown at it, or budgets will get cut from other needs. corners get cut anyway. someone walks away with most of the cash.

In response to Reply # 37

We aren’t regulating guns in America.

All the data shows is more mass shootings and more deaths.

It’s like saying “if poor white voters educated themselves on the issues they would see”

That shit ain’t happening bruh. Gotta deal/prep for the world we live in and not the world you want to live in.

From countries who have implemented stricter gun laws to cities that have them, an array of evidence shows that shootings drastically decrease. Something can be done to at least reduce the likelihood

Furthermore, that piece of shit Reagan actually tried it too, in this place called America, and it worked as well before the NRA got stronger

You have Google, use it. Try and think critically and imaginatively before you just hysterically blab on here all the time.

If you gunna respond with dumb ass shit like bad people are gunna do are gunna do bad things, don't.

We had a mass shooting drill as well, didnt make me want guns in my classroom. If your friend is so worried that logic goes out the window, he needs to do something else.

I did some mission work in Joplin, MO. They were hit by 4 tornadoes at the same time with almost no warning. The tornadoes hit the night of the Senior Prom. Luckily the prom was not at the High School because this is what the school looked like after touch down -

http://cdn.teachhub.com/cdn/farfuture/rssg3gun4-zBnMSkTo5PVsfJKdWaH1-YvP2fo9EGrsU/mtime:1356976139/sites/default/files/joplin%20high%20school.jpg

You could see all the way through the school from the front entrance. The students at the high school and the other schools in the community were so traumatized, they built shelters for every student and staff member of the schools.

http://www.joplinschools.org/district/community_safe_rooms

There are rows of these at the new high school location behind the mall - https://hips.htvapps.com/htv-prod-media.s3.amazonaws.com/ibmig/cms/image/kmbc/20258174-20258174.jpg?crop=1xw:0.84691011235955060xh

If you live in a natural disaster prone area, these shelters make all the sense in the world.

However, if we as a country are not willing to address our gun obsessed culture and the prevalence of objects of war throughout our communities, making them bulletproof is just another way to address our own national natural disaster.

We have to stop calling people names because they have a different opinion on topics.

And like someone said, those shelters hold 40 kids, even if you have 8 in a school, that's 320 kids MAX. What about the rest of the kids, just assed out?

It's ridiculous that it's coming to this rather than people letting go of their guns...also, the cop in FL didn't do his job
