"Rate your top 3 cities in the US"

MIne are

1. NEW YORK

Can't even begin to explain, those who know know, those who doesn't - I feel y'all too

2. NEW ORLEANS

Bomb all the way around, the vibe and the culture is my shit

3. MIAMI

NOTE: This is only on some "head to Miami for the weekend" type ish, I'd never live in Miami - maybe not N.O. either for that matter. I lived in NY for 4-5 years and loved the shit out of it (with its obvious downsides). Considering moving to LA now, but noooot feeling LA like that tbh

This ranking is based on power.

If it were for fun I'd swap out DC for MIA.

I've been thinking more and more as the years pass that its only a matter of time before it starts to really and I mean really flip.

Some parts of central LA are 10, maybe 15 minute drive from downtown which has been becoming a destination with each passing year.

Its only a matter of time before the hispsters who were pushed out of silverlake into the outer areas will just keep moving down and down

i love Chicago, even before i ever visited i was kinda obsessed with it. first time i visited it just hit me. theres a feeling there i haven't gotten anywhere else.

i haven't visited NY, LA or Miami so can't really compare.

I'd rather visit and live in Chicago than London or Brussels tho.

I have a soft spot for Detroit and the overall area is awesome. would definitely live there again.

3. DC. I like the idea of DC a lot. Never liked the layout tho.

I haven’t been to the Bay, Chicago or N.O.

Heard good things about all of them. That Chicago winter tho... nah

Real talk, LA is number 2 just because I got people in the industry out there so it’s always a good time and the weed is insane.

I’m real fond of smaller cities like Richmond and Pittsburgh too.

ATL traffic rules it out but I love the blackness of that city.

*but only at night when you can actually drive and not be stuck in horrendous traffic with the worst drivers in America.

Ok on the real it would have to be

1- MIA- beaches, weather, scenery, food
2- NYC- don't need a car, city never sleeps, will never run out of things to do
3- LAX- weather, food, caters to whatever scene you're into

honorable mention to NOLA for having the best food in America

like most folks from nyc, or the bay, or wherever will tell you 'yeah it's great, but it will never be as great as it was, my favorite neighborhoods are gone, there was this other golden era, gentrification' etc etc

are there cool cities that haven't crossed that threshold yet?

is that whole line of thinking more grounded in nostalgia than practical insight, and things are on the whole, better, in most of these places, regardless of how the natives tell it?

edit: i'm an oakland native and this town has turned for the worse imo, just to clarify

I've seen some really cool shit happening in the Twin Cities..

apparently real estate agents have seen the same.... lol

But the place is unique for the midwest imo. if you utilize both cities.

the rest are a bunch of suburbs strewn together.

If most people have to drive to work. That ain't a city.
If you can't walk down the street to get groceries. That ain't a city.
Can't hop on a train and get wherever you need to go within reason, 24-7. Not a city.

Lots of negatives here, but the overall concept is far superior to the rest of the country's cities.

I've never lived in Chicago but I imagine it might be similar.

I like Austin and Atlanta the best out of the places I've lived. But what's the thing people in those complain about the most? Lack of great transit and having to sit in traffic all of the time. I just imagine all of the places I've lived having proper transit and how much better they would be, it would be a game changer.

I lived in Philly in center city. Walked to work and walked past 2 grocers on the way home.

Pittsburgh as well. Cold as shit but you can live in the city without a car. They don’t have a huge subway but the city busses used to be extremely reliable.

For several years I bike commuted to downtown and back. I ride a mototcycle into work now, but on bad days I take the train. I can walk to two markets in less than 10 minutes.

enough for me. I grew up in Austin, went to college in DC, and lived in Atlanta and SoCal. Pretty decent perspective IMO. There's a laundry list of shit I don't like about NYC(food is incredibly overrated if you're not rich), but the thing they got right was the transpo/infrastructure. It's a joke to think about how American cities were planned/laid out. Car culture ruins the quality of life once a city gets to a certain population/size.

made the traffic so much worse

used to be traffic went one direction during rush hour and it was at certain times

now because of the shift in people living downtown and working elsewhere like culver city or wherever the traffic never ends

that said

The downtown F train, 6 train, and etc. between 5pm and 8pm is hell on earth and I damn sure would rather be in a car

buuuut train is bad for half an hour vs. 1.5 hrs on the freeway

LA traffic is worse because they arent actually trying to solve the problem.. more lanes on 405 just means more cars not less...

Also the fact most people cant afford to live near their job has made the issue huge.

NY - Proper city. You can't fall into culture anywhere easier (in US)

LA - Multiple small cities smacked up against each other. It is properly appreciated in a dream-like state. If NY is litmus test for grit, LA is litmus for imagination.. if you can dream it you "could" be it. Stand on MY Hollywood broke as fuck overlooking the city and you will imagine you can do anything.

NO - (shouldnt even count as US tbh) Culturally Iconic albeit incredibly specific.

Cities I enjoy as well, CHI, St Paul, Seattle, Denver, PHL

"Cool" cities always seem to be a code word for "social scene." Seems like many things are based around consumerism/events. If one is into that then cool, but I'd rather create my own stuff than go watch someone show off theirs. I'd have probably loved NYC fresh outta college tho, TBH.

One thing that stuck out to me is that in NYC it's "meet me at XYZ," while in Philly it's "come by the crib."

The one thing I do like about NYC is all of the transplant women up there, and coming from Philly they are ridiculously easy to talk to (partly because of the aggressive culture here)

You got a point. From what I see from Philly and hear from music coming outta there, it's like you have the freedom to do shit the way you want it, how you want it, and not have it dictated to you by all the marketing motherfuckers that want to cram the latest hot neighborhood or music or 'scene' down your throat. The difference is there is an actual full blown industry here of people getting paid to make shit hot.

True to an extent, I feel native NY'ers will open their crib to chill. Transplants tend to live in shittier quarters due to coming here later, having mad roommates, small cramped spaces, and there is way more space outside of your personal space to congregate at.

>The one thing I do like about NYC is all of the transplant
>women up there, and coming from Philly they are ridiculously

Yeah it's a plus to be a hub for the rest of the country, because you do get some variety.

When we lived in Philly I took my wife to NYC for the first time. She was surprised how “nice” the people were compared to Philly.

My theory was that people in NYC were too busy to get into petty shit but Philly heads spent all day looking for reasons to argue cause they didn’t have shit else to do.

The amount of arguments I would get into in Phillly over dumb shit was damn near comedy.

Miami - It's home so I'm biased. The beach is always nearby. Tropical weather. Rich in art. Cultural melting pot. My favorite sports teams. Downside: crime and hurricanes

DC - Cool ass city. Good food. Rich in culture. Some family there. Downside: crime

Chicago - Family there. Always something to do there. Good comedy scene. Downside: crime and that got damn HAWK

Chicago is home, so that's #1.

Brooklyn is my second home, so that's #2

I had some GREAT times in ATL, but I saw it through the eyes of a visitor, so that doesn't count, right?

Same with Memphis and Miami. Kicked it, and loved every minute of it, but I haven't spent enough time there to qualify it as a favorite. Most of my trips are to small towns to see relatives, etc.

I haven't been to LA yet, but I'd imagine it's cool there too.
