"Do y'all have a home stereo system?"

Do you still use it?

Getting tired of listening to all my music through a phone or earbuds. Thinking of getting some nice bookshelf speakers and make music listening the pastime it used to be for me.

What's your setup?

I used to connect an iPod to it - that was a-ight.

Now I just have a walkman radio connected to it (for tapes and radio).

I'll probably connect it to something else eventually (a CD player, another iPod - my old one got broken, etc.)

The speakers I connected to it are from some old system my mother had from the 1980's.

USB turntable - gaming systems - amazon dot all connect to my receiver, mostly listen to Spotify from either system and the xbox can see my external hard drive so I can stream off that too.

When my wife and I got married, in 99, we both brought full blown component sets to the marriage...turntables, dual cassettes, CD changers...etc. (mine has a DAT player!). They have been collecting dust for years. I can't bring myself to cart them off to the Goodwill...memories.

Basically, we have a few bluetooth speakers, various brands, around the house and a soundbar on the TV. We just sync our devices to whatever is closest.

I think my car stereo satisfies my desire for bass. I can't take credit for it because I bought my Explorer used, but the previous owner put a few bucks into upgrading the sound system.

minus the record player. the speaker towers had the 4 speakers each, tweeter, mid-range, and 2 12 inch woofers. never needed a sub.

ended up taking to to a pawn shop and go 60 bucks for it. damn near shed tears like I was giving away a pet.

TV and Fluance speakers.

This gets annoying because I am the only one who knows how to use it.

In the living room I got a sony soundbar which I use to stream a lot of Google Home Music.

Use them all the time.

Backroom (TV room):
PIONEER Elite SC-LX801 receiver
Paradigm Reference Studio 100 v.3 (L/R)
Paradigm Reference Studio CC-590 (Center)
Paradigm Reference Studio 20 V4 (surrounds)
I can't remember which sub I have...

Sources: Oppo BD-203, Tivo, TV, Xbox One

Front Room:
harmon Kardo AV-120
Polk LSi7 (L/R)
Numark TTx
Macbook Pro
A PC

Backroom is for serious listening, front room is MP3 and computer noises.

Also kitchen, bedroom and bathrooms all have AM/FM radios and I have 2 portable Bluetooth speakers. Never use the earpods at home.

way to make your home setup instantly futuristic.

Ain't nothing going to make you feel more like Captain Kirk than telling your computer to play some music and it happens.

I added a Sony Soundbar to my Sony TV which allows me to throw my TV audio to the same setup. The only problem is I haven't figured out how to listen to music but watch sports.

On the otherhand my TV does have HDMI ARC, or Audio Return Channel, which means I don't have to fool with changing inputs to make it work seamlessly. Its a feature I didnt know my tv had when I bought but I am not buying anymore without it going forward.

If you subscribe to Pandora or Spotify....the Echo Dot might be a better move. The Echo dot has audio out jack. I don't know if Google Home will let you control spotify with voice. If it does, then forget everything I just typed lol...

I will say that my Echo devices respond to voice MUCH better and more reliably than my Google homes do...

Won't need an audio out. And Google Home works great with Spotify, Tune-in, NPR.

Then I freaked it and Got a Harmony Hub so my google home can also control my tv.

ya figure

the sound engineers mix everything down using reference speakers and from their end they are spending for-ever working the songs to get them to sound an exact way

when you hear songs through monitors you're hearing them the way they were designed to be heard

a lot of frequencies, sub frequencies, layers, channels just get lost in the mix or things might not translate 1 to 1 in car stereo, headphones or the home hi-fi.

first time I picked up a set of monitors a good 15 years ago, I remember just spending the day going through all the songs I loved because it was like hearing everything again for the first time and it made me understand how music works, how its made, what works, what doesnt work (I was making music at the time, I mean, I still do but I lost the passion a while back)

33. "good question. it depends on the monitor"
In response to Reply # 30

but the big big difference with bass is that you just don't feel it, you can actually hear a good amount of the subfrequencies and if there is modulation of sorts you can hear it all.

some monitors are known for having a weak low end so folks will often add a sub unit to really get the bass shaking.

I'm on the second floor and I have an infant so I'm not really able to bang tunes like I used to.

however, the good thing about monitors is that even at low levels the low end still has a ton of presence

Kenwood. Receiver, 200-CD changer, dual cassette deck. Turntable is the motion recent addition, but it's at least 10 years old too. Denon. Best I could afford at the time.

Speakers are really old. Don't know what they are. Grad school professor gave them to me.

but I was over a friends house who had a Sonos home set up.

When I finally asked him about his set up he was so hype to tell me about it.

If we stay in this house and renovate I'm getting a set up like that.

100% truth about keeping the volume down with the family around. It’s like having a big dog in a little apartment.

But when I get the house to myself on a weekend afternoon, I let my system do it’s thing....

The Set-Up:
Marantz 2265b receiver
Zu Audio Dirty Weekend speakers
Music Hall MMF 2.2 turntable
Marantz CC4003 CD changer
Sony TC-WE625 Double Cassette Deck

im on a headphone kick right now but im sure i will soon want to switch to speakers. i used to evaluate music with headphones, on a stereo and in the car before moving on. right now its strictly headphones.

I technically own a Rotel amp (+Eltax speakers) that is like 12 years old, still sounds great but it's been at my brother's for the past 10 years Since he's in Europe I don't see myself ever being reunited with it so I've been low-low-key researching amps recently.

I've got some form of stereo capable equipment in damn near every place in the house I can put it.

Yamaha receiver/10" sub/JBL surround setup in living room

Yamaha receiver/12" sub/Pioneer Andrew Jones bookshelf speakers + Atmos surrounds/Technics turntable in the den (Want to upgrade this amp at some point and have a cleaner, fuller sound)

Nice little Altec Lansing stereo unit in the kitchen that sounds great and I will never get rid of. Found a little Bluetooth adapter online to plug into the ipod input and I just stream to it now.

Yamaha receiver/Technics turntable/Polk 5.1 setup in my office

Pioneer receiver/JVC turntable/Dual bookshelf speakers in the bedroom

I also have some DCM 12" speakers + surrounds in my storage that I had all of my 20's that fuckin knock that I will never get rid of and will live again. I have some Technics 3 way speakers in there too that I love for the same reason.

Car knocks. All upgraded.

I love the sounds man. I am not married but have been with my GF for 4 years and we'll probably get married. She knows if she marries me she's marrying all of this stuff too. lol. I DJ as well so I'm always grabbing and messing with stuff.

I have some Audioengine desktop monitors and Polk powered sub in my office. It's a decent setup but I only use it to listen while I'm working. Before it was my office and just a "music room" I did just chill and listen to music which was nice. I have a Sony 2.1 soundbar for my main TV. It kind of sucks. Tempted to buy a nice home theater setup but don't really have the space/setup for it right now.

When/if I ever live in a single family home again, I'm getting a really good system and cranking that shit as loud as I want. Right now I'm too worried about annoying neighbors for a really nice system to be worth it. I have a really nice pair of headphones I use when I really want to hear good sound quality.

I copped about a year and half ago and it's surprisingly potent. Subwoofer gives good bottom and the soundbar is crisp.

You can also control subwoofer/bass/treble levels and there are different presets for the type of sound you're listening to (music, movies, sports, bluetooth).

And it's a steal IMO at $150.

You could also cop a pair of wireless surround speakers for $130.

I felt bad for you for a sec lol

But yeah, the 'quality' joints are (wo)man-cave/theater room worthy.

I mean a family/living room could have a decent system but the 2.1 with the woofer is decent to me. If I want to dig deep into the sound, I go to the studio in the basement and turn on the real set up...with the monitors (for music at least).

My biggest reluctance is that I am a chromecast person and Sonos doesnt' seem to play great with Chromecast (oh yeah and the price).

I had a Sony soundbar with chromecast at home and i love it. Loved it so much I bought a couple of used ones on eBay and none of them work properly. that is, I can't get any of them to pair with subwoofers I bought online. SMH.

I got a Samsung tv and want to get just get a Samsung soundbar with chromecast and call it a day.

rarely use headphones at home now. went with a AVR and tower speakers. got a turntable. i dont really use bluetooth. i tried to connect for the ig battles but it wouldnt. hoping its just a bug i can iron out as im past the return window lol

i either play music on the turntable or using google play music on the shield tv. sometimes youtube videos.

i can cast to the shield tv for music but cant send bluetooth audio as far as i know. so if the app doesnt have a cast feature then it wouldnt work.

66. "Bluetooth is trash for home audio set ups"
In response to Reply # 60

I much rather have a wifi cast connection so that I can just cast from any app. Bluetooth requires to many steps to switch speakers or switch devices controlling the device.

My problem with casting is that my preference is chromecasting but I got a mish mosh of different devices from my wife's iPhone to Vizio TVs and Samsung soundbars that don't have chromecast built into them. I think a couple of chromecast I ordered will solve that.

That's a dope setup. My only question is can anyone else in the house easily operate and use? I had an AVR setup that my wife or kids couldn't easily use. Then I went to a sony tv and sony soundbar and a google home assistant and everyone could use even tiny kids by using their voice on the google home.

I am trying to get that thump and easy enough for my wife to use. The holy grail.

i had not bothered with bluetooth since i go this. i used to use bluetooth with the soundbar. with this i only wanted to use it for the IG battles. i guess i could just mirror my screen.

the shield tv is the truth. its expensive though. i got a smart tv but i dont use any of the features on it. i already had the shield tv so i just use that. if you just need to add the casting then yeah chromecasts would probably be the move, much more affordable especially if you need multiples.

im solo lol. it really is easy though. i just wake the shield tv and the tv and AVR turn on. so if you want to use tv its straight forward. you can use the tv remote to control the shield tv and adjust the volume. the shield tv has a voice assistant but i dont like using those things so ive never tried it.

the asterisk is that i do need to use a different remote to wake the shield tv, either the AVR remote or the shield tv remote. the tv remote doesnt have a home button that works for the shield tv so i gotta hit back to get out of apps. they made a new remote for the new version of the shield tv that i think would control volume too, it should work with mine too but i dont think its a big enough deal to get one.

one thing that is kinda weird is if i want to use phono. since it doesnt need video it kind of flips out. if i just switch input to phono it will work, the tv goes blank and i can start playing an album but then after some minutes the whole set up turns off when im guessing the shield tv goes to sleep. so i have to put the shield tv to sleep first, that turns off the tv and AVR then i have to turn on the AVR into phono and its good to go. if i turn off the set up instead of putting it to sleep and try to turn on phono directly it turns on the shield tv and it switches to it. i think that wont happen if its been off for a while, like in the morning i think i could just turn it on directly to phono without issue.

one thing that i want to figure out a way to do is to have audio for the switch come from the tv speakers and play records through the AVR speakers. ive never had to do it but its something i wanna be able to do just in case lol. i could hook up a second set of speakers to another output but thats a bit much just for something that i might want to do sometimes. i eventually want to add either a wireless speaker or the second set of speakers so i can listen to music or tv while cooking.

I can probably hook it up to my record player as well but...I just don't want/need that much sound.
